What are the arrows over the signal strength indicators after Denim update?

Got the update overnight. Now I have diagonal up arrows that appear over my wifi and cell indicators. Any idea what these are. They appear to disappear if I move the phone around - maybe some kind of directional strength indicator?

takes time switching over to wifi after it connects, and the phone can use cellular data when wifi loses internet if you have that enabled
