This might seem weird... but I?m looking forward to "sidegrading" to a newer but lower end Lumia. I've enjoyed my 920 very much. I purchased it because of its camera and it's given me outstanding results repeatedly. However, it's still a phone camera and is far, far from my NEX 5N, specially for low light. In fact, I've noticed that ever since I purchased the 920 I've used my APSC body way, way less. This is convenient, but the overall quality of my picture collection has noticeably suffered. As good as the 920 is, it's no APSC.
This realization came full circle when I dropped the 920 and the upper left quarter shattered. It's functional - I'm still using it as of now - for the past 2 months and I'm looking to upgrade, but what I realized is how much it hurts when one of these expensive, high end devices breaks. I would have never dropped my NEX the way I dropped the 920 since I don't use it constantly like the phone. Pair the bigger loss of the expensive object + the great photography that nonetheless can never be as good as my APSC = convenience is not a strong enough pull for me to keep buying flagships. Thus, I've rationalized what I actually need:
1GB RAM - futureproofing if Win10 is heavier
Expandable storage - I have 30GB of music to carry with me
4.5" AMOLED screen, or at least IPS screen with Clearblack
Dual cameras - even if not great -, flash and typical sensors (unlike 530 or 63x that removed them)
This is a good enough phone that I can use as what it is: a bit-of-everything device + some photography. The screen will look fine, it'll perform fine and it will push me to take the NEX out much more often and improving the quality of my picture collection overall. If it breaks, I'll buy another one and still overall spend less than on the flagship. If the camera ain't great... I'll keep bringing my NEX with me. Just last night, I brought it with me instead of just the 920, and I was able to capture the galaxy at night which I would have never been able to do with the 920 - in the end,
achieving the end result is what matters and this would only be possible with the phone+APSC gadget pair:
