Why did only some of my SMS messages get restored?

I upgraded from a Windows 8 phone (ATIV Odyssey) to an 8.1 (Lumia 735) several months ago. Text messages from June 2013 through October 2014 were restored, but everything from October 2014 through March 2016 (when I upgraded) is missing. I used the Windows Phone Message Backup app to back everything up on my computer and the same block of messages is missing. Is there any way to find the missing messages in the cloud? Or a way to download them from the Odyssey? (contacts+message backup can't be installed on the Odyssey because the app is only for 8.1).

you didn't use the default MS backup service for backing up sms?
