Pressing and holding the call button for 2secs doesn't activate cortana.

Re: Dedicated cortana button on Bluetooth headsets

Every headset I've owned you just push and hold the call button for a few seconds. Even works with my SGS3 ear buds.

Re: Dedicated cortana button on Bluetooth headsets

you mean every headset will bring up cortana if we push and hold the call button for few secs?I dont think so

Re: Dedicated cortana button on Bluetooth headsets

It's been my experience as well. Holding down the headset call button used to initiate voice search but since Cortana came along it starts a Cortana voice session. This is a standard Bluetooth headset feature and works, in my experience, universally.

It even works with 4 pole wired headsets with mic and call button.

Re: Dedicated cortana button on Bluetooth headsets

really?wow. but it doesnt work for me. am i missing something? does it work on all bluetooth headsets? and wired headsets also? so when you hold down the call button will the phone wake up and the cortana will be activated? that will be massive. that will save me from buying a highend phone with hey cortana. I happen to use cortana a lot, so it will be handy to just activate her using a bluetooh headset and use my phone hand-free whenever i want.

I can't tell you I've tested every headset out there, but it is standard so should work (always has for me). The one exception may be wired Apple headsets that use more than the basic single mic and button arrangement, as they use a proprietary system and will likely struggle.

I have tried this on about 8 or 9 different headsets. All have worked.

Yes, when you hold down the call button Cortana launches (even if phone is in standby) and you can speak to it through your headset mic. Seeing the results, however, often requires that you find your phone and look at it so not as useful as one would hope.

Re: Dedicated cortana button on Bluetooth headsets

thank you. I didnt know that you can launch cortana using headsets call button. may be my headset is faulty.I will try another one. its funny though, i thought this is a new idea, and i wished they should make headsets with dedicated cortana button..Now i feel dumb knowing its already there. does this work on all lumia phones(with cortana of course)?

I use a Lumia 930 and I have my old Lumia 820 as backup. Works with both of these. As with the headsets, I have not personally tested all Lumia models but I believe it works with all the WP8 Lumias as this is a standard thing. Note that where a phone does not yet have Cortana this trick will launch the pre-Cortana verbal search/speech control instead.

It is possible that the button on your headset has a flakey contact. If so, it would work for a single press function but would be flakey for a long press. Makes sense, but just a guess. Try it with a friend's headset.

I can't say it works with every headset ever, but since I've had Cortana (PFD on day one of my WP experience) its worked with every headset I tried.*

*Your experience may vary. See dealer for details. $199 a month does not include deal doc fee of $399. Taxes and other fees may extra. Must take stock from dealer lot by xx/xx/xxxx.

Thank you all. Finally it worked. i adjusted the headsets prong(pulled it a bit out) and it worked. but it doesn't work when the prong is all the way in the jack(also when it is all the way in the volume is very low, and again when pull it out a bit the volume is good and cortana works fine too). Don't know what is happening there. Soon will try it with a Bluetooth headset.

I think that's a problem with the jack. Just to be safe, buy some headphones from the dollar store and see if it still does it. If not I think its safe to assume its the headphones. If it does, it may be the jack.

4 pole 3.5mm jack plugs/sockets are a bit of a cludge. The sockets want to work with 3 pole plugs as well so it's all a bit of a balancing act. Most 4 pole plugs will fit without tweaking, and most 3 pole will fit but may need twiddling a bit.

Looks like you hopefully have (usually) an unlucky plug. Try another set.

Of course, BT headsets don't have this issue but they can have a selection of their own tricks to play.

that makes sense. and Now i get it why my headset doesnt work properly when plugged all the way in.thank you so much. I will try a 4pole plug

On my Bluetooth headset, which is a bit non-standard and aggravating at times, I have to hold the call button for a minimum of 3.5 seconds, sometimes 4 seconds. I have to release it after that time to get Cortana to launch. If I hold it for 5 seconds, it powers off. ?!? Yeah, I'm mad about that one. A 2 to 3 second long press still acts like a quick tap and will play/pause music, which is rather irritating. If I hold it just short of the 3.5 seconds, it plays whatever was queued last. Hold it one second too long, it powers off.

My previous Bluetooth headset had a dedication voice activation button, which activated Cortana with a simple click of the button. One call button, one Cortana button, volume up/down, mute button, and separate power off button. This newer one (and $80 cheaper) is too small for so many buttons. ;)
