If your windows phone is running slow it may be to do with background tasks you need to disable any you don't need..

1) go to settings

2) click battery saver

3) swipe across to usage

4) scroll down

5) click show all apps

6) scroll down and click on each of the apps that say allowed under them and you will have an option to turn them off

also it would be worth clearing your temporary files (settings, storage sense) and temporary internet history (settings, swipe to applications, Internet Explorer) this will also help to keep the phone running smoothly

also its worth setting up your phone to store apps/photos/games/videos/music on to your memory card (SD card) to do this...

1) go to settings

2) click storage sense

3) scroll down and you should see...

Store new music, videos, and podcasts on my
phone

Store new photos on my
phone

Store new apps on my
phone

Store new downloads on my
phone

change the ones you want to SD card to save space on the phone and help to keep it running smoothly

After the update (which took almost an hour with all the migration and stuff on my 520), my phone was noticeably slower. I did a hard reset, pulled back all the saved settings, apps, etc., from my OneDrive backup, and it became a lot faster (though some apps tend to run in the background unlike on 8. I suppose some devs will have to update these background processes in the following weeks).

I have a Lumia 1520, and while the phone itself is fast (navigating and normal usage), most apps are noticeably slower, especially games.
I actually posted a thread asking about Asphalt 8 because it was lagging horrendously. I closed all running apps and tried again, smooth as silk. However, I opened it again an hour later, with just Whatsapp open, it was laggy and choppy all over again.
Whatsapp is also... quirky. It's fast at points and crashed at another.
I'm guessing devs will be rolling out 8.1 optimized updates soon.
I'll wait till then, I'm a patient man. Also since basic functionality is working perfectly, I'm not entirely bothered.

what you suggest is the ultimate solution but for the people who don't want to hard reset the above will improve the speed, you should also try a soft reset first, a hard reset will be a better option though...but you should make sure your phone backup is upto date, and also save your personal content to onedrive

1) go to settings

2) click backup

3) make sure all listed items are set to on

4) click the apps+settings option

5) click backup now

not sure what it will be but try uninstalling whatsapp and see if Asphalt does the same thing then try reinstalling whatsapp

Done... no difference.
I guess Gameloft and MS just need to add in more updates to makes apps more optimized.

The same thing happened when iOS 7 came out. On my iPad, a lot of apps were slow, lagged and crashed.
After a couple of updates, everything is normal.

It is a Preview after all, and most devs are updating their apps to work better by the time 8.1 is fully released. I can wait.

I have a similar problem on my Lumia 620. I recently used the Preview for Developers app to upgrade my phone to the most recent version and I find my phone often lagging.

- sometimes returning to the start screen shows a "Resuming ..." screen
- often the usually smooth animations of the UI (like showing the start screen tiles) seem to lose some frames per second
- some elements of Settings have a 1+ second lag after tapping, for example, cellular+sim. During the lag the whole interface is unresponsive
- some websites viewed under Internet Explorer and UC Browser lag so much it's impossible to scroll. Other apps run as smooth as always.
- the action center extending animation sometimes looks like it has low frames per second

I have reviewed my background apps and pretty much just left Facebook Beta as the only one allowed. No difference in overall system speed.

If I decide to do a hard reset, how exactly does it work? Will I have to manually reinstall all used apps and configure some things that aren't backed up to OneDrive? Does the backup automatically restore after logging in with the Microsoft account? Generally, is it a process that requires a lot of attention or is it just painfully long?

Hello, could you pls help. My Lumia 720 still updating for how many days what should I do to faster it or just cancelled it. Pls reply as soon as possible. Thank you.

It can't take days! If it does then cancel it and see if you have at least 1.5 GB of storage available.
