WP7 device not showing in Win XP Pro "My Computer"; is in Device Manager

I tried to search for an answer, to no avail.

Windows XP Pro; Nokia Lumia 900 -- When I connect to the PC the system recognizes it. I can see it in Device Manager but not in My Computer. Shouldn't I be able to see files on the phone?
What am I forgetting or missing?

The only way you can manage the contents of the phone is through Zune.

Wow, now that's ignorant. Why would Windows phone and Windows PC not be able to communicate???
I thought WP was a better platform than iOS. Maybe I should have kept my iPhone
