Back in July:

Lumia 850*:

Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSMM8916 4xCortex-A53 cores @ 1.4GHz
Adreno 306 GPU
1GB RAM /16GB + micro sd
GSM HSPA
5″ Screen 768?1280 GG3
10 MP 3520?2640, Pureview, Zeiss optics, flash + 5MP ffc
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, hotspot
BT A2DP, apt-x
2650mAh battery
GPS IA-GPS GLONASSL proximity, luminosity, led notification

Lumia 750**:

Qualcomm Snapdragon 410 MSMM8916 4xCortex-A53 cores @ 1.2GHz
Adreno 306 GPU
1GB RAM / 8GB + microSD
GSM HSPA
5″ Screen 720?1280 GG3
8MP 3264?2448, Zeiss optics, autofocus, LED flash 1080p@30fps + 5MP ffc
Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, DLNA, hotspot
BT v4.0, A2DP, LE, apt-X
2650mAh battery
GPS (A-GPS GLONASSL) Accelerometer, proximity, luminosity, led notification

Both phones were (SUPPOSEDLY) cancelled as Microsoft's strategy has changed. Microsoft wants other companies to manufacture devices with W10M and MSFT itself will be focusing on software. However they will be producing quality devices, just not as many as Nokia.

Now:

Lumia 650*** (Q1 2016):
Snapdragon 410
5'' 720p
1 GB RAM / 8 GB + Micro SD

Surface Phone (Q4 2016-Q1 2017)
Intel Atom X3
5,5''
Improved continuum, WIN32 apps compatibility.

High-end 9xx/XL Lumias with Snapdragon 820 (Q3-Q4 2016)

* & ** & *** - no specifications were confirmed at any point.
@ all release dates are just rumors.

IMO: Wait 9-12months and get a Lumia 950/XL for half the price or get a L930 now. :)

Can't say if Lumia 650 or even if Lumia 750, 750XL or 850 whatever Microsoft Mobile releases would ever come closer to Lumia 925. Not aesthetics and design wise, and if you want good back-up phone, my suggestion for you would be you buy Lumia 640.
Even if Lumia 650 would come in January 2016, it won't be huge improvement over Lumia 640 except for metallic frames, and Improved Front Facing Camera. So, stop waiting and buy Lumia 640 which would also get Windows 10 mobile update in 1st wave of Windows 10 mobile official OTA update, sometime in January 2016.
Lumia 750 or 750XL or 850, even if would be announced won't be improvement in Performance and Gpu capabilities, would be announced with Snapdragon 615 processor( or it's variants 616 or 617), that has a reputation for being over heating CPU and fast battery depleting, and have seen that in my friend's Xiaomi Mi4i( having Snapdragon 615 processor) which suffers from above mentioned problems.

I picked up a 640 and am really impressed for the price. It feels great in your hand and doesn't look like a $60 device. Knowing how cheap it is makes me way less protective and nervous. I feel like I could just throw it around (I still don't), and if it breaks I'm only out $60, not $600 like I would be for a 950 or 950XL. The camera performance is pretty good, but won't be on par with something like a 930, 1520, or 950/950XL. That is the only thing I miss when downgrading. It is probably close to your 925 though.

I agree, get a 640 for now and let the future devices play out. I recently went from a 928 to a 640 for the same reason and I'm surprised at just how good an all around phone it is. In fact, just bought a second one for my wife, and a third one as a spare (cheaper than insurance).
