Unable to sync from phone using WP app for desktop, shows no contents

(posted as guest in Ask A Question, decided it would be best to post here as well since that requires moderator approval)
I somewhat recently stopped being able to sync to or from my HTC 8x (WP 8.1 v8.10.1429.341) so I downloaded an updated version from a live.com site. I'm still unable to sync to or from my device except by manually copying files through explorer.
does anyone else have this problem/a fix/a reason?
