Can't get HDMI audio to work when connecting to TV

I bought the hdmi adapter so I can connnect the SP3 to my TV. It connects fine but it uses the audio from the SP3 and not the TV. I've tried going into "playback devices" and switching from speakers to the TV set. It appears to work because the sound bar becomes active for the tv and the bar for the speakers stops moving, but I don't get any audio.

Has anyone else had audio issues when connecting to a TV via hdmi and if so how did you solve it? Thanks.

Preface: I haven't done this.

But, did you make sure that you used an HDMI port on your TV that has ARC (Audio Return Channel)? My TV only has one HDMI port that is ARC enabled.

I've only tried one of the ports now that I think of it. I never even thought to give the other one a shot. Couldn't hurt.
