Try to perform a soft reset. There might be a problem in accessing the memory. I faced a similar problem in the morning. All my apps and music that resides in my SD Card were gone coz the memory card could not be read by the phone. Did a soft reset and back to life.. :)

I feel like, in general, we're not asking for a lot.

I just need a competent music app. It should be able to:

Load my local music collection instantly.

Scrub tracks.

Not overwrite my ID3 tag information without my consent. And it should also be able to read the tags appropriately (3.3 and 3.4 alike).

An in-app equalizer.

Forward, back, play/pause, stop

Volume controls.

I don't get what it so complicated about that. I don't. And the whole "it's hard to develop" thing is seriously a tired excuse. It does not take two years to develop a music app... There are 3rd party independent app developers who write this stuff in the bedroom at 2AM with nothing but a coffee machine and time. This is the hallmarking of mismanagement. Whoever is directing the Windows Phone project and allotting funding/attention should really reevaluate his or her methods.

It seems like the new update has caused my app to go stupid beyond belief..

All my music are local, nothing in the cloud. Xbox Music app has decided to download all the preview songs from all the artist it recognizes, not only that but it also adds it into my random shuffle.

Anyone know a fix or is running into this problem as well.

How do I delete unwanted playlists from my phone? I have tried directly from the phone and that doesn't work. I have tried to delete them from windows explorer while connected to my laptop and that doesn't work. I have tried to delete them through windows media player and that doesn't work.

I have copied like 500+ songs in music player, selected a track and I am sick because if I select a track with the name starting with "A", the shuffle selects like 50-60 tracks starting with "A-D", where did rest of my 440-450 tracks disappear?

This is entirely true. We're not asking for much, we don't need the app to read our thoughts and play a song according to our mood or something like that. All we want is an app that conveniently plays the music we put on the device without mucking too much with it. When I put ten sing from "Bloodhound Gang" on the device, I don't want half of them showing up as "bloodhound gang" and the other half as "the bloodhound gang".

The old hub, while not perfect, was a decent music player app. Out was very limited, but the main job - playing music properly - it must certainly did, out only needed a free improvements here and there I don't see why MSFT did not simply take the hub part, "export" it and improve it...

I agree, the old music hub still works fine in 8.1. I can't understand how the new music hub is so dreadful. I understand that it's still in beta but it still feels like it shouldn't even be out of alpha testing.

More room for improvement for the Xbox music app

The app has improved a little but I still can't believe how many bugs are still on this app. It's like Microsoft don't even know how to fix their own app.
First of all the playlist still has many issues, which are; duplicate songs, deleted songs from playlist keeps coming back, when you change the order of your songs its will eventually go back to the way it was before.
Another issue is that the image resolution of an artist is too low and even lower when you enter the album menu of the artist. At least the artist image resolution in the album menu should be as high as the same image in the now playing background.
This app also needs an improved appearance, how can we have an official Microsoft app ux/ui looking so basic and ugly. I know WP is all about simplicity but come on it shouldn't be that basic. Even the WP 8 music hub was more attractive and functional.

Did any of you also notice a quick burst at the end of tracks before switching to the next song? Is there any work around or fix for this?

Not yet...that little burst has been there since WP8.1 released. It's not only the XBox music app either...Pandora does it as well.

Hopefully it's in the plans for the next 2-week update.

According to Paul Thurott we can expect the following improvements in the coming weeks:

http://winsupersite.com/windows-phone/xbox-music-windows-phone-81-gets-another-update

I'm dissapointed about how this part of the OS has suffered a downgrade after splitting it from Video. It's as if they built the app from scratch. I hope they get it to the level it was before, by the official release of 8.1/Cyan, which is a good point to do it.

The lack of Live Tile animations is appalling, really.

I know and it's really frustrating, i knkw this isn't an xbm issue, this concerns the os itself, is there anyway we can report this directly to the concerned group?

They pretty much *have* to know about it - it's 100% reproducible on every song, every time. (I used to think it only happened sometimes, but I think that was because the little noise-burst it played in the gap was quiet - crank the volume up high at the ends of songs, and you'll hear it every time.)

Unfortunate that it wasn't fixed in this update - it's annoying. (Though not as annoying as the gaps themselves... it's just literally adding insult to injury.)

Does anybody know how we could possibly bring this issue up to Microsoft? I tried reporting through their music app but it doesn't allow me to add exact details

It's been mentioned plenty of times on uservoice, as well as their own answer forums. And again, it happens all the time - as long as one tester has listened to 1.01 songs at least once, they know about it. (It seems like a time-honored tradition, where every time they rewrite a music system from scratch, they mess up song transitions (in addition to dropping features. :)))

My 2 main complaints on xbox music app:
1. It needs 6-7 seconds to fire up!!! That is outrageous!!!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe its due to persistent new media scan, this should be tweaked.
2. Often when I resume the app Now Playing doesn't show up though the music is actually playing.

The last update is so like MSFT. 1 step forward - 2 steps back.

Improvements I Want:
1) Live Tile support (ala WP8)
2) Transparent tile support
3) Faster loading time
4) Reduce the 'Xbox Music' font like that in the 'People', 'Xbox Games and Podcast' apps.
5) Swipe to change songs
6) Larger album art in the Now Playing screen
7) Equalizer

Come on Microsoft, this are simple things, nothing new.

I'd add hi-res artist art that downloads automatically from the internet.

I am having trouble with the new xbox music app (like most people it seems). Couple questions since my xbox music app on my windows 8.1 doesn’t seem to work any more. Is there a way to download an album to my collection without downloading it on my phone locally? It seems like the only way that I can get this to happen is if I make a playlist but it can seem so tedious. So another question is can I delete songs locally off my phone without it hurting my cloud collection from my phone? When I go to delete some songs that I don’t want locally due to memory, it tells me it will remove it from the phone and from my cloud collection. Is there a way to select locally only? Would a file explorer be able to help with this? Also, since the update on Friday, some songs I try to stream, I get 30 seconds samples instead of the actual song. I am a current xbox music subscriber but I imagine this is a bug with the newest update. I find the whole xbox music experience tedious because without my PC app (which Microsoft tech support website, no one can resolve the issue… time to call someone) the phone and xbox interface makes it too painful. On the Brightside, they are making progress which brings me hope and keeps my clinging on
