Microsoft have done their part. Nokia have done theirs, they phones are shipping in various places (for instance Rogers in Canada, and EE in the UK).

Its all down to the carriers now. Had yesterdays release been an iPhone, every single carrier would have followed the presentation with a press release about release details and prices. Had WP8 been important to carriers, there would have been press releases everywhere, or maybe the press just aren't bothered to report it.

The 920 became available on EE in the UK this morning, no major press release, and its not on the front page, you have to look for it.

I suspect WP8 just isn't as important to all the carriers, as it is to everyone here.

Where are all the concise details about the Ativ S or even the 8X?
THIS

There are 3 months to every season, with Fall having Sept, Oct and Nov. With a Fall release of the phone, as long as they hit shelves by Nov. 30 the mark has been hit.
Technically Fall lasts until December 20th so they have even more time ;). But no way they'll delay it past mid-November.

Actually, if you want to get technical about it, a "launch" would mean availability in the marketplace... Of which none of the OEMs have in the US, yet. Having a date, price etc, does nothing other than give you something to dwell on. What you're referring to is an announcement (to which, you are right - we can generally expect dates/prices and so on).

And how is my original post an excuse? There are 3 months to every season, with Fall having Sept, Oct and Nov. With a Fall release of the phone, as long as they hit shelves by Nov. 30 the mark has been hit.

Back to Friday the 13th Part 2

This is what they call in the PC industry a "paper launch".

"Today we are launching product XX. And it will be available soon but not today (referencing a vague time frame in the future)." NVidia and AMD are really good at pulling that stunt with their graphics cards releases.

So, then, apologists, what am I supposed to tell my non WP friends who are interested in the 920? Just keep waiting, it has "launched" but we don't know pricing and availability? Oh, and if they don't like it, they're being "petulant children" (because insulting the user is a real path to success in a highly competitive market).

(I am simply advising them to get an 8X from T-Mo in the 14th... I have about had it with the nonsense.)

No one cares.

AT&T will announce it this week probably. The common wisdom seems to be that the 920 will be out Nov 11th or 12th. That sounds about right to me. There is no point in crying like babies with loads in your diaper until then. Or go ahead and throw a temper tantrum and insist you're going to go to another platform/carrier/planet.

No one cares. Shhh. Grown ups are talking.

I think the point here is that for a launch that is so important to the future of a company they are sure letting another really muck it up.

And, shame on AT&T for being so lackluster in their launch of the new Windows Phone 8 devices. This is a great opportunity to really get out there right after the Microsoft press event but instead I wonder why they're so quiet.

The lack of real activity from AT&T (not a coming soon page) seems like they're saying they couldn't be bothered to actually care about anyone who wants one. Or, even worse, they don't care to get the people who are currently looking for a new device onto the WP8 platform. While those of us who really want a new WP8 handset will wait it out they're certainly not helping those people who are indecisive on an iPhone 5 vs a GS3 and could be swayed to the WP8 camp if they could just see the devices on the way.

My thoughts exactly! Maybe they shouldn't have made the Nokia Lumia 920 exclusive to AT&T...

Funny that the loudest complainers claiming incompetence and idiocy on Nokia's part are the ones who had no intention of getting it.

Outrage about a release date for something they don't want.

Where are all the concise details about the Ativ S or even the 8X?

No... I want the Nokia Lumia 920. I have a BROKEN iPhone 3GS, I've been due for an upgrade for a while, but was holding out for the iPhone 5. THEN I was disappointed with the iPhone 5 and fell in love with the Lumia 920. I can't handle dealing with a broken phone anymore (I can't even listen to calls normally, I have to put everything on speakerphone lol). If they don't announce a release date soon then I am switching to Android... unfortunately.

Oh, this is the "mature" attitude to take? Gotcha.

Some of us have concerns beyond our own wants. Some of us are concerned for the platform and are tired of seeing uncoordinated event after uncoordinated event kneecapping the launch buzz and potential of a platform we really, personally believe in.

It's not a temper tantrum to note when Microsoft fails to execute successfully. Yesterday was a failed "event" due to little new information and even fewer launch specifics. They don't have a lot of luxury to make execution mistakes with Windows Phone 8, in case you haven't noticed.

People DO care. Any time you leave potential customers waiting, there is a very good chance that they lose patience and simply walk out of your restaurant...or your grocery store....or in this case, they simply renew their contract with yet another Android or iPhone. The successful businessperson puts as few obstacles as possible between their customers and their product.

In Apple's case, you simply tune into an event or read the widespread coverage of it afterward, and you know all of the details and can get the thing they have you so excited for in a handful of days.

In this case, you tune into, what, the fourth Windows Phone 8 related event, see Jessica Alba shill for her site, watch some kids get silly onstage, and hear that the games you don't play anymore (Words With Friends, Draw Something, Angry Birds Space) on iPhone or Android are "coming soon" to this new platform. And here are some awesome new devices that are coming "in December" or "by Thanksgiving" or "TBA".

If you can't see why we're scratching our heads and voicing our displeasure, I don't know what to tell you.

People are just sick of seeing the constant pinning of the blame on Nokia and MS for not releasing the 920 in the US, when the reality is that much of the blame should rest on AT&T's shoulders. If Nokia can get their phones out on other carriers around the world, with release dates then why would they purposely hold up AT&T? It has been repeated countless times on this forum but people continue to rage.

My only explanation of the anger directed at Nokia is from people that just want to see their Nokia shares rise in value.

I'm excited for the L920 but I am curious as to why AT&T hasn't even started a preorder phase. On another thread somebody already has their 920. Why is it already released but AT&T, the exclusive carrier here in the US, doesn't even have a preorder yet? I don't understand what the hang up is.

I think I need to clarify a few things here.
I am (or would have been) a new windows phone user. Unlike most of you here, I did not follow all the rumors for months and months. I got aware of the Nokia Lumia 920 in September, and since I am in dire need of a new phone and I really, really liked what I saw, I wanted to get this phone. I started reading the websites to get an idea what the phone is about and when it will be available.
And here is what I got on info (or rumors):

- The Phone will be available for sale on October 21st....nope
- Preorder starts on October 21st... (it kinda did, but not really)
- The release date now definitely is November 4th...nope
- Just wait until after the WP8 even, then we will know...nope
- It definitely will be November 11th... do we know? nope

I am not blaming Nokia or MS. I went to an AT&T store today, because my phone died completely and I just had to get a phone and ended up with an iPhone I don't really like. I don't like Android at all and WP7 just wasn't an option since I don't see a lot of future for it.
When I asked the employee in the store about the Lumia 920, he just told me that nobody really knows anything about when it will be available, but that the iPhone is great and I can take it right with me.
AT&T just doesn't care. And that is really what disappoints me.

Now I still hope to get the Lumia 920 eventually, but being new to this platform I probably just expected too much. Not from MS or Nokia, but AT&T.

Again, try to look at it from a non insider perspective. I read so often that this or that rumor is most likely true, that I really believed it. Because truth to be told, also Apple has rumors, but they more then not turn out to be correct. (And no I don't like Apple a lot, but a fact is a fact) Now I know more. Now I know that there is no such thing as certainty on the WP platform in regards to dates unless AT&T states them.
I still think that AT&T just doesn't care enough about WP8.
So for now, I am stuck with an iPhone. There is a possibility that I will get the Lumia off contract when it eventually becomes available and just put the iPhone back in the box for backup.
It is just surprising that carriers all over the world are doing a much better job than the exclusive partner of Nokia here in the US...

I had to manage several go to markets and launches in my life, with or without partners. But never have I seen anything like what AT&T is pulling of here...

Again, I like WP8 and I like the Lumia 920 even more... The Way AT&T acts just didn't leave me a choice. And for the average WP newbie like me, "sometime in fall" just doesn't cut it, not after several events and launches.

Very good post, Leo. People have been cutting AT&T way too much slack, IMO. Something you can do is sell your iPhone when the 920 comes out. You'll be able to get big $$$ for it, probably enough to cover the costs of an unlocked L920.

If the Lumia 920 comes out on the 11th (which is still a possibility), couldn't you just return your iPhone to the AT&T store for a Lumia 920? I know they lowered the amount of time that you can do that to like 15 days, but that still gives you time to make a switch... and you'll probably get some money back too if the Best Buy price of $150 still holds true.

This is of course if you went out and purchased a iPhone 5...

If AT&T moved any slower (on anything) they would move backwards. Unfortunately, they are the power broker in this situation, so it is what it is. Either way, I am starting saving now, because I want an unlocked WP8 device, and I doubt they will come cheap.

I got the 4s to keep it cheap, so the off contract Lumia is still within budget.
A November 11 availability date would be nice though, but since AT&T stated a coming soon (which at least in my industry (PC's and stuff) means we don't have any idea) I am not too hopeful in that regard...
I will just wait and see. Some day it will have to be available....

I wouldn't compare Nokia's launch or anyone else's to Apple. Apple has a unique ability to launch products nearly flawlessly. That comes from the fact they control the OS and the entire supply chain, they aren't delayed by the OS maker or the distribution channels and they are notorious for being demanding and calling the shots. They have also mastered the art of how to announce products and how to tease people with the waiting without going so far as to piss them off.

This launch HAS been a little goofy, but it's nothing different than what we have seen with dozens of other anticipated phones, whether they are Android or WP. Just check out some other forums and you will see people worked into a frothy lather over a hundred other things they have no control over. When's this Android getting the newest OS update? This is an outrage, when is this device coming to so-and-so??? And on-and-on.

This is a little frustrating, sure, but it is hardly unique to Nokia, AT&T or Windows Phone.

I want a Lumia 920 too guys. My 900's screen has a big crack in it now, so I'm eager to replace it ASAP. But there is no sense in flipping out about this stuff. All we can do is wait patiently. The phone will be released soon, I'm sure in the next couple of weeks.

There are people who've lost their homes in the flood this week, people who have no power and no heat in the northeast due to this storm. The damn Nokia 920 launch is hardly the most important thing happening in the world right now, so how about you chill the **** out? :straight:

I just like the fact that Microsoft was talking about how they where going to advertise the living crap out of Windows Phone. But, by the way, you can't buy it anywhere in the US for two weeks and one of two flagship phones we don't have a freakin clue as to when it's going to be released.

Not sure I believe this but I stopped by my local AT&T store and spoke with the manager, he informed me that he was told the the all of the windows phones will not be released on AT&T until the end of Oct. or the first part of Nov. Can't believe they would wait that long to release anything.

I agree with you that Apple is in a very unique situation and they have mastered the art of launching a product quite well.
And I also feel extremely sorry for the people who lost their homes in the flood and those who are without power.
But.... to get to the subject at hand, if MS & Nokia didn't have the control and confidence in AT&T to support what IMO is the most critical launch for MS and Nokia, then why go with AT&T exclusivity in the first place? Furthermore, if they did know of the challenges with AT&T being ready to release the phone in time for the launch, why flaunt it on our faces every step of the way? Thats the part that frustrates me the most. And now to hear that everyone at the build conf will get a free 920?? Awesome for them, but seriously? Do they even understand their customer base?
I understand that they wanted to create excitement and enthusiasm for the new product and OS, but they have to understand the market we live in and the choices everyone has. Only the ones who have been patiently watching every move and waiting to get their hands on the 920 will continue to hold out. Others who were even considering but weren't sure will most likely jump ship and those are the potential new customers which MS & Nokia should have been after.
My two cents
