Docked vs Undocked text/icon size

I have a Surface 2 and dock hooked up to 2 monitors. I actually works really well when it is docked but when I take it out of the dock the desktop icons and text is really small. I thought it would detect that it was undocked like a laptop and adjust the display accordingly.

Has anyone run into this problem and found a fix?

I connect it with my TV and after taking it out it automatically put it back to original size it does take a while sometimes.
