I just bought and received a Lumia 920 yesterday. It appears to not have been updated and is still on Portico. I'm guessing I should hold off on updating? The camera is one of my main reasons for choosing this phone.

yes you should stay on portico to get what you paid for.

Just for the record, "Portico" is not a firmware revision number. The name "Portico" refers to Windows Phone 8 GDR1. Note the build numbers below:

Windows Phone 8: 8.0.9903.10
Windows Phone 8 GDR1: 8.0.10211.204
Windows Phone 8 GDR2: 8.0.10327.77, 8.0.10328.78
Windows Phone 8 GDR3: 8.0.10501.127, 8.0.10512.142, 8.0.10517.150, 8.0.10521.155

None of these updates are inherently tied to Amber or Black. "Amber" and "Black" are codenames for firmware builds. None of the above OS builds affect camera performance in any way. Nokia's firmware updates, however, do.

I'm on GDR1. Is there a way for me to update to GDR2 or 3 without having to mess with Amber or Black then? Forgive my noobishness (I'm on day 2 of using Windows Phone), so I'm just not sure if they're packaged together during the 'Update Phone' process.

What do you mean by without having to mess with Amber and Black ? Of course you can always update but I just can't understand what you mean by that.

Today I tested a 1520 with Lumia Black and also with this device we have the horrible issue at the camera :-(
I'm thinking now to downgrade my 920 from Black to Portico because is incredible that Nokia doesn't fix it in all this time... (the other solution is waiting the upg to WP8.1 and hope (another time like with Black) in Nokia....)

With Nokia Camera.
The issue is a firmware issue (introduced by Amber) and is indipent by the camera app that we use (I tried to use more types of camera apps with my 920 and I confirm to you this) :-(

I'm getting ready to downgrade myself. These yellow tinted pictures occur no matter the app I use. Its quite disappointing.

I hope that if you downgrade your device to WP8 Update 1 (aka Portico or GDR1) than is possible to upgrade it to Update 2 (aka GDR2) and Update 3 (aka GDR3) (with the MS app "Preview for Developers") without the nokia firmware (Amber & Black) that have the issue. If is possible then you have the lastest WP8 OS without the buggy nokia firmware :)

I hope this Tutorial helped you guys :)

A question:
when your device have Portico then is possible to upgrade to GDR2 and GDR3 without the fw amber and black ?
If yes then I'm sure to downgrade my 920 from GDR3+Black to Portico then I upgrade it only to GDR3 :)

These are currently not available in Navifirm+ for AT&T, i.e. red in color and 404 error. Navifirm tells me they will be available when Nokia puts them back on their servers. Will they ever be put back up? Or am I screwed? I am downgrading because I replaced the digitizer on mine and it won't work. someone here Why is the digitizer on my Nokia Lumia 620 not working? - Nokia Phone - iFixit says the replacement digitizers aren't compatible with newer versions. Not sure if this downgrade would even help but it is worth a try if I can get it.
