Goodbye, Lumia 920: The AT&T Exclusive Superphone Will Probably Flop

T-Mobile and AT&T use different bands for 3G. So UK phones will work on AT&T for 2G and 3G (plus HSDPA) but only 2G for T-Mobile. As for Verizon and Sprint, well, our phones will just not work on those carriers period. Buying unlocked in the US means you paid full price for a device that you still potentially can't use on your carrier.

I do prefer the UK system. "Oh Three aren't offering the HTC TITAN?" *goes to Carphone Warehouse* "One HTC TITAN off-contract please" *pops Three SIM in the phone* - Profit!

The UK system is vastly superior, especially in that you actually save money on your monthly service by buying outright. Canada's system is a hybrid of the two: all three of the major carriers (Rogers, Bell & TELUS--or just RoBelLUS) currently use the same GSM bands-850/1900 for HSPA(+) and 1700 for LTE. This is expected to change slightly when our federal gov't auctions off the 700mhz spectrum in the near future. Anyway, we sadly have to deal with 3-year contracts to get maximum savings on the cost of the handset, (a device that is $50/3yr can be as much as $450/2yr) and our monthly bill is the same no matter what. And we also have to deal with carrier exclusives. As a side note, the only two of the Big 3 that have real coverage in my area (Bell and TELUS) have already announced they aren't going to carry the 920. Thank God for unlock codes!

I hope Nokia/Verizon will announce something to the effect of a CDMA L920 for the US market soon. And the drama will go to something else again, like how the L920 is just too heavy for today's users, how 8X is just the right phone, how Nokia needs Android, that sort of thing.

Y'all don't worry, maybe Nokia is planning to release Lumia 920 variants to the other carriers. Won't you love that?

So long as the variants do not have features missing or added that are key to the Lumia 920 experience.

Who knows, maybe Nokia will go crazy and do the whole E7 successor, QWERTY slider flagship on Verizon.

Shaking my head.. If you are on Sprint.. Move on.. If you are on Verizon.. Watch for awhile.. If you are on TMobile.. Pray.. If you are on ATT.. Pull out your beach chair..

I agree with justreason. I have a friend that's been on Android for years now because while he desperately wants a Windows Phone he won't leave Sprint.

Verizon snubbed Nokia previously (and really WP in general) and at least the WP8x and WP8s will be headed that way.

Though with the new lack of the word "exclusive" on the Nokia US Lumia 820 page I'm hoping that means at least T-Mobile will get it. More carriers having the WP8 phones in the US will only help the chances of the ecosystem taking some market share back from iOS and Android.

But, since I'm on AT&T I just need to pull out my beach chair as you said. Sadly I don't have an upgrade available so this is going to be an expensive chair. :)

and maybe by the time that happens, everyone that was waiting will move to Android/IOS.

Nokia keeps making stupid decisions one behind another and people keep defending it. Nokia is not rye savior of Windows Phone, even Microsoft decided to back up HTC.

Sure. And HTC releasing the One X+ together with the 8X was a stroke of genius right?

I can't defend Nokia's bad decisions, and this ranks at the top if true. But I don't think we should have double standards for manufacturers when they do something silly.

"Our system is superior because we can buy outright..." Blah blah blah. Please name me a place where you can't buy outright and use it as a Go phone with cheaper rates. Your system isn't superior, people here just don't like it or use it.

Tmobile has a chunk of AT&T spectrum now, thanks to the failed bid. People are already reporting getting faster speed on their AT&T phones on Tmobile. The Verizon iPhone can be used day on on AT&T's network.

The most horrible thing about US carriers, is they lie about their data speeds. The FCC is now looking into their claims vs reality. The old *up to 1000000000000 Mbps* isn't going to work anymore.

what about Canada? If I can't get the 920 i might just ditch WP for this cycle altogether.

The difference is that HTC is primary an Android manufacturer and Nokia banks everything on Windows Phone. Yet Htc will have their phones in more than one carrier.

Nokia has to be treated differently because we have higher expectations from them.

Just like how Apple and Samsung are expected of great hits. I see your point there. But not the point where HTC is treated as the Android manufacturer. As you said, HTC is backed by Microsoft to be the manufacturer of the signature WP8 device, 8X. Things are expected of them too, and they release the One X+ together to cannibalize their WP8 product line. I see no business sense in it.

I do not deny that Nokia's moves seem dumb now, but with this, I will breathe for a bit.

The business reason is because their Android line up sells better than their WP line up. Once that changes, I think you'll see their WP device get their own special release. I actually think HTC would like WP to do better, a 50/50 revenue would be great for them. When you put all your eggs in one basket, thing can fall apart real quickly.

Yes indeed, but then, HTC is cannibalizing their own product lineup with 2 flagships. Samsung doesn't have this problem yet as their primary focus is on Android in the mobile space, with only token support on WP, but HTC is placing both devices as a part of the top end. I do not think that is a wise strategy for HTC who is in bad shape as well.

I hope Nokia proves that all these back and forth isn't necessary after all, but I believe their media department needs to step up to avoid all the kerfuffle and let consumers focus on the device like how Apple does it.

The Lumia 920 was supposed to be the savior of Windows Phone. It was going to finally usher Windows Phone into the mainstream. It packs the right goods for the job with forward-thinking features such as wireless charging, NFC, and a gorgeous large screen. But none of that matters now. Like the Lumia 900 before, the Lumia 920 is exclusive to AT&T. And that’s just dumb.

A) You're not even in the US...
B) Related to point A, the US is not the centre of the universe

LOL my favorite post this week for sure!

to be honest i dont see this phone being exclusive to just att. i think that other carriers will have this phone kinda like how the captivate first came out: same phone different variations of it

A) That's not nice.
B) Sure isn't. That's why Nokia announced it here first. The US market is a very sought after market. It's not the center of the universe, but it sure is important.
