How do I turn off the Surface Touch screen when I play a movie through the Mini DisplayPort?

Ok I am sure there is a simple answer here- when I am playing a movie thru the Mini DisplayPort to the HDMI jack adapter, how do I turn off the surface touch screen? It is a terrible waste of the battery!
