Lumia 830 and Windows 10

Well, here's where I am on my AT&T 830. I'm running the latest firmware (.24047) and OS version (.164) via the fast ring. I haven't gone back via WDRT, but from what I understand I don't need to. Prior to .122 I was back on 8.1 for a while (and really liked it).

Current issues:

1. The black screen thing. Every once in a while (a couple of times per day) the screen just goes black for a second or two. I know from comments on other posts that other 830 users have seen this, and it doesn't seem to matter what app I'm using (it even happens on the start screen) or what I'm doing (sometimes nothing).

2. Battery life is not great compared to 8.1. Before reverting back to 8.1, I had been on W10 for a couple of months and just thought my phone battery was getting old and didn't have as much capacity as it used to. As soon as I went back to 8.1, I realized that the battery was just fine (generally sufficient for a whole day with moderate use), and that W10 was the problem. Build .164 is better, but still not as good as 8.1.

3. Cortana instability. Sometimes Cortana works fine. Other times I type in a query and when I hit return it kicks me out of Cortana and back to the start screen. Again, there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason about this, it just happens sometimes.

4. Sharing instability. Often when I try to share from a photo, a news article, or a webpage it gets stuck after I select either Outlook Mail or Messenger. This has gradually become worse and now happens more than half of the time I try to share something.

5. Edge still sucks. It's often slow, refuses to load some pages, and when it does load the rendering is sometimes goofy. Also, embedded videos are a hit-or-miss proposition.

6. Lag. Still plenty of "resuming" and "loading". Not as much as previous builds, but it's there.

Over the next few months I'll be in the market for a new phone and new tablet. (And I'm swearing off Micro-usb forever-it's Type C or bust from here on out.) I'm really torn about what to get. I love how windows handles email and calendaring, I love the live tiles, and the photos are great. (They're really good on my 830, and I'm drooling over the camera on the 950). Even Continuum looks interesting. But W10 seems to have a lot of bugs, and Android is looking pretty smooth after Lollipop. I could see myself being pretty happy with a Nexus 5X.

Well, after living with Win10 for a few days, I finally gave up and rolled back to 8.1.

I think that its pretty bad judgment on Microsofts behalf to have released Win10 whilst there are still a few pretty nasty bugs that need ironing out, especially the battery drain and poor camera quality.

Such a shame really. 😞

Really?!!

Some people with Lumia 950 devices reported improvements with the Redstone builds, so I am interested to see if Lumia 830 users experience any improvements. I am aware that it is indevelopment software and there are issues though.

There was a lot of code architecting and refactoring that went on with the OneCore in Windows 10 which can bring performance and stability improvements, along with making it easier to maintain and update.

I'm on w10m oficial with a 830. I love the OS and all but my phone is lagging a bit. Action center is working on low framerate when I have some notifications. I can feel the start screen is not the smooth (lags / slow). This low framerate happens also on apps like facebook, wc and etc.

Its like the OS is too heavy for the phone. Is this happen only with me?

Windows 10 run smoothly on my Lumia 830, maybe, because I've done a soft reset after the upgrade. try do a soft reset and update all you apps on a fresh setting do not restore any backup. see if there is still the lag..

Sounds like you're describing a hard reset, not a soft one.

L830 on Bell Canada (unlocked). I'm on .164 (firmware 15184.36005)

I see the screen flashing - but it's not that frequent. Battery drain is worse than 8.1 but I'm still getting a full day with medium use.

Cortana - hands-free operation in the car is awful compared to 8.1 Very slow & clunky.

Other than that it works fine. The comment about Mrs. Lincoln made me laugh.

I'll try a hard reset in the future. The funny thing is that yesterday I changed the settings to get 4 tiles (175%) and the phone works better now. Sound strange to me.

Thank you!

I changed the scaling from 200% (Recommended) to 175% and the phone seems to be a little more responsive. I like how apps, texts, and emails render with this scaling size also.

Am on redstone on the AT&T Lumia 830. Currently downloading the new build released today.

These are observations on the first redstone build i installed Yesterday:

So far I've seen that the screen flickering is still present.

Screen tearing on Edge seems to be gone on this build

Scrolling is smoother

I like the app resizing animations

Battery seems the same as on production builds.

No show stoppers so far

Oh one thing, band sync is still broken.

Posted via the Windows Central App for Lagdroid. I kid I kid :D

Same things on Lumia 830 eu variant and 830 Vodafone Romania variant...
Btw, i have a issue in Facebook app when i play videos in full screen, if i reduce
or pump up the volume, screen flickering until i exit the full screen...
Anyone else?!?

I got Windows 10 last night 25 March on my 830 I'm from the UK...Looks good and pleased apart from 2 little problems
1 My emails no longer come thru with a notification I have to sync to get them ...And is there a way to listen to the various sounds to choose which one to assign to a task like email sms etc

Thanks guys

David

So far I'm pleased with WM10 on my 830 but I have a suspicion that their is a battery drain. One new app that I am using is the Garmin Connect which is then connected to my Garmin Forerunner 235. This is absolutely the functionality I have needed for ages with my phone but it just might be that this constant bluetooth connection is going to be, in part, responsible for the battery drain.

A few more observations:

  • Animations are great and there is no performance lag. Apps such as facebook seem more alive.
  • For the first 1-2 days battery life sucked and the phone was somewhat hot, but progressively this stabilized. Now battery discharges faster when the screen is on, but is better than 8.1 in standby (based on discharge rates measured through Battery Pro+ app). So the average battery life really depends on how much your phone is On vs Standby. I believe the screen needs optimization and we should have a new driver/firmware soon.
  • The Nokia Battery Saver app does not work as expected (does not show % in live tile, does not show app usage). The new Battery Settings allow you to pin a tile, but it is not live, so there is a gap if you want to display battery life in your start screen.
  • With the camera app I really can't see any difference. Same great quality and no lag. There is however a noticeable lag when the album tries to access the new photos (you see the circle loading).
  • At times there is a flicker or black screen for a second.
  • Weather app does not support the lock screen so I had to switch to external weather app.
  • Fitbit app is much more stable and syncs in the background (in 8.1 it often stopped). A few other universal apps also perform better in 10 than in 8.1.
  • The phone dialer is much better (after all this is a phone!). You start writing a name using the dial pad, and the phone narrows down on the names, based on the letters you use.
  • The Messaging app supports Rich Communication Services (RCS) natively whereas the old one didn't. On the other hand, Skype integration with Messaging app is confusing. For example I am shown as logged off in Skype so my friends may think I am unreachable. Chat messages never reach me, but when someone places a video call the window pops up proving I am online and reachable.
  • The 830 search button seems to have a bug. In my case it always opens Google and searches for the string {searchTerms} even though Edge is set to use Bing! I've also lost the functionality of searching for QR code.
  • Notifications sync between devices is a cool new feature but again it's confusing that some messages sync and others don't (e.g. SMS content doesn't). But I just set this up, I need to explore it further.
