Lumia 830 and Windows 10

Like anton above I'll post some more observations:

1. I went to perform a search in the Amazon app, all I seemed to get was a black/blank screen. I've since performed a factory reset as I am in the middle of a PAC code transfer so thought I'd see if that did anything, not just for this though for other things too, it is the same but now I can't even sign in to my Amazon account, same thing a black/blank screen.
2. Ebay was the same as Amazon above, tried to sign in after I had performed a factory reset and all I get is a black/blank screen when I put the cursor in the "Email or user ID" textbox when trying to sign in. If I put the cursor in the search box I get another black/blank screen.

It's all very frustrating, I generally prefer the slightly more modern look of W10M, that could be pure boredom with WP8.1 though as there is not much in it, however this leaves me in a tricky situation, do I rollback to WP8.1 to get my 8.1 apps working again and leave myself short of the few things that have been improved in W10M plus new Universal apps? Or stick it out waiting for Amazon, Ebay and any other app makers that might have issues with my small collection of apps?

I'm not much of an app person, I only grab a handful but Amazon and Ebay, that is two very large players that really should have decent working apps. I hope I'm just being stupid and I'll find a fancy new Universal app for anything I've moaned about but like I said above, it's getting frustrating coupled with the never ending wait for the screen blinking to be fixed...

Edit below.

I'm a windows phone fan, have previously had a Lumia 925 and have my brother on a 930 and Sister-in-law on a 735; I've also recommended and got two of my mates onto a Lumia 535 and 925, I'm not going to make any sweeping gestures of mutiny and say I'm off to android etc, but I will say this, I'd not recommend W10M to anyone just now and if I was buying a new mobile tomorrow it wouldn't be a Windows Phone of any variety, Likely I'd get an android as I think Apple are overpriced. Just added some additional thoughts as I'm just plain unhappy.

Edit 2 below.

I'm sure I'll get flamed for this but I generally don't like the new WC app, so I have downloaded the old Jay Bennett one from 8.1, the one I paid for, I thought that needed some work but I just prefer the way that that one works to the new one, anyway, same issue as Amazon and Ebay, cannot sign into forums as all I get is a black/blank screen. I think this is something to do with Edge and the rendering engine in W10M as it seems to be everywhere and on apps where perhaps there is a web wrapper at work.

I'm sure I could go on and find another Edit number 3 but I've moaned enough today, almost certainly going to rollback to WP8.1 as this is kak :-)

I found out the hard way how to resolve problems with "black screen" when you try to input some data in text boxes in some apps.
My problems were linked to the size of fonts. Since I am visually impaired I always try to enlarge displayed text. There are 2 settings where you can enlarge fonts:

First in Ease of Access -> More options -> "Text scaling": default size is 130% and I can enlarge it to 140% without "Side" effects.
Second is in System -> Display -> "Size of text...": default is 200% and can be enlarged to 225%. If I enlarge it to 225% and reboot (as needed) after that some of my apps that need text input become useless; as soon as I try to input text the screen goes black.

I had upped my "Display --> Size of text" from 200% to the max of 225%, it is just better for me like this as my eyes aren't what they used to be, after making that change I'm downloading all the updates but I've already been into Amazon, Ebay and the old WC app and signed into all of them, surely that should have been picked up in testing.

Many, many thanks KefKef :-)

I believe this is a function of the apps not scaling properly, not the OS. This shouldn't be a problem for apps designed for the UWP, only ones designed for WP 8.1.

One of the first things I did was reduce the scaling from 200% to 175%, I just liked the way everything rendered at that level.

I updated my Lumia 830 (unbranded, Germany) to WM10 using the upgrade advisor 2 days ago. Went smoothly, everything worked.
This morning I was prompted to install an update, which I did. It took ages (so I guess that was a new build or something) but after reboot it looked OK at first glance. But unfortunately about 3 quarters of the apps installed don't open anymore, among them the Store, settings and the phone app, which leaves the phone in a rather useless state.
Did anyone experience this, too, or has anyone any advice how to solve this?

Yes, just wait and this problem will resolve by itself. It is a lengthy process that seems to re-download or re-configure some apps. This also seems to take even longer for the apps that are on SD. Wait and you will see this resolved later!

Thanks for the reply. So I'll hope for the best...

A few more observations:

  • Fitbit app is much more stable and syncs in the background (in 8.1 it often stopped). A few other universal apps also perform better in 10 than in 8.1.

Mine (and not only mine) Fitbit app stopped syncing with my Fitbit Surge. :(

There's been no change whatsoever up to now. Moreover, the hard reset by "button method" (Vol-down+Power+Cam, wait for vibrate release power, 5 sec, release rest, as stated by Microsoft) doesn't seem to work either. Just gives me an ordinary reboot.

This is not the proper method to hard reset Lumia 830 with buttons. It goes like this:

1. Make sure, that your phone is off.

2. Press and hold the Volume down button, then briefly press the Power button. Keep the volume down button held down until you see exclamation mark on the screen.

3. Then press this buttons in sequence: Volume Up -> Volume Down -> Power button -> Volume Down.

4. The phone will reset and reboot to the initial setup screen.

Thanks. It worked using this method. W10M seems to be OK, now. Just some work to set everything up again. Not much data loss thanks to SD card.
I wonder where I got my reset method from.

Here's one additional comment after a week's use: Messaging app seemed to be consuming consistently more than 35% of my battery! Note that I barely use it (about 5 SMS per week). I had however logged on to Skype, even though I never use Skype. After logging off from Skype, Messaging app consumption has fallen dramatically, and as a result battery life is much improved. Seems that Skype integration has a very high cost!

830 user in UK .
Buggy like text notifications still not appearing but if screen is touched gently they will appear.
Do not get resuming/loading.
Battery life is ok on one of my 830's but drain on other {different networks}
I have always found camera quality ok so not much to say on that.
I mainly only use phones for calling, texting and email not social apps etc.

In few days I will be saying bye bye to my Lumia 830. Really started encountering issues of lag from past 3 months specially when whatsapp usage has increased it is not able to coup up with. Also recently upgraded to windows 10 official, look is very good but the phone has become terribly slow many times any app it keep saying resuming or loading. Really the processor and 1GB RAM is not able to handle the things. Many times many places no signal where all your fellow mates keep working on phone peacefully, this is really annoying thing for sure. Finally decided to bid bye to the phone and will buy Redmi note 3 very soon..

Really had to post this exact post in 7 different threads?

oh sorry friend. As i was participating in all those threads of 830, so thought i will have to pas this info, but it also helped me to get a good advise from one of the member from one of the thread to hard reset and phone works fine now:smile:

Yes, I saw that other thread. I've been looking for user experiences feedback with W10M on the L830. I understand your frustration though - if my phone had a sudden death *right now*, I would be trying out Android, but for now the L830 is still working and I'm not enclined to part with several hundreds dollars right now.

Current version seems promising but I'm going to resist a little while longer before jumping in, seems W10M is still too wobbly for me.

I've tried W10M thrice so far and had to revert to 8.1 every time - I can hold out still a bit longer... ;)

I have now spent about a week with the new Threshold 2 10586.218 Cumulative update, which fixed a few small issues. However, the bigger issues such as inconsistent performance and app crashing still occasionally occur. At times it is buttery smooth, but just a few hours later the experience would be full of dropped frame rates, loading, and blank screens.

Guys, what's the difference in using Windows insider (slow) and waiting for the official release? Would slow bild be the same?
