One reason why Microsoft's failure getting Windows Phone to take off is so damaging is because not having control over the iOS and Android ecosystems has enabled Apple and Google to get a leg-up on promoting their own services, at the expense of Microsoft's equivalents. Thus, Hangouts and Facetime have chipped away at Skype market share, Google Drive and iCloud have taken away attention from OneDrive, Google Docs, Google Docs and iWork have stolen users away from Office, etc.

This is already a big disadvantage, but Microsoft seemingly goes out of its way to further disadvantage itself by completely failing where Google and Apple excel: cross-promotion of their own ecosystem. See this picture as an example. It's a Bing search result for the movie Spotlight. The results direct link you to the iTunes store to watch it. As bad enough as it is to offer free promotion for your competitors, not even listing your own equivalent (here, Microsoft Movies & TV) is inexplicable.

As long as the search is being done on Windows 10 I doubt they care....

It wasn't. It was done on Windows 7. But the point is that they should care. That's them literally spending internal resources promoting a competitor, leading to potential lost revenue and guaranteed lost brand promotion. Their competitors don't gift them such publicity; Microsoft shouldn't either.
