My friends Nexus 5 shoots way better photos than my lumia 920.

Nexus 5 camera is way worse than the 920. The 920 was a breakthrough camera when it was released. Even though the nexus released a year its camera isn't any good. Maybe its just in your case that the 920 isn't taking better pics. And I agree that even 820 takes better pictures than the Nexus. Haven't used 720 though.

No way, the Nexus 5's camera is inferior to that of the 920 especially in low light.

Well.... i guess it depends on the 920... i know my way around a camera and recently, my 920 is giving me nightmares. I did not drop it or whatever, contrary to my gf.

Here are 3 pics - taken the same day with 1 camera and 2 lumia 920:

I took the 1st one with my regular camera:

The 2nd one was taken with my 920 - i decreased the iso a little:

You can see a huge difference between my gf's 920 and mine... needless to say, my 920 looks ridiculous next to my lumix g2 camera... while it used to be good before.

Here are some pics i took with my 920 before it went bad:

As you can see, my 920 really became a terrible shooter compare to its debut. Once again i never dropped it and the lens is clean.
I just downloaded both 920 pictures and had a quick look at them. You used a very high ISO setting of 1000 compared to your Gf who used just 800, even 800 is too much already for my taste.
Also the exposure times are different. Yours has been exposed longer from what I can tell, thus creating those washed out building lights. The other photo was exposed shorter, leading to a darker overall picture as well as less dominant lights.

It would be more interesting to compare both phones with identical manual settings. Then it is much easier to tell what the problem is.

Oh and @Silviu:
As Microsoft has stated in the imaging AMA, the previous Pureview models only seem to get the new software with Cyan, no background or algorithm improvements regarding the cameras. :(

Just a reminder to everyone that before taking photos with your smarthphones, wipe and clean the lens first. Your fingers are all over your phones all the time. It makes a BIG DIFFERENCE between devices with the same exact specs... the one with a cleans lens will not take the same exact image as the one with smudgy lens. Dirty lens affects focus and lighting.

The "2nd one" seems to be taken with a smudgy lens. The focus is off and everything looks "foggy".

I have a 920 and a Nexus 5, and I can say that shooting video is much better on the Nokia because the OIS is more stable. For still shots though, the Nexus 5 wins. It's images are sharper, and really do look better in low light.

Here's my thoughts.

When I first got the 920, it blew every other phone away. I did comparison shots against the S3 and an iPhone 4s - there was no comparison. Fast forward to a few software updates, and a couple drops the image quality doesn't seem to be quite what I remembered it to be. Meanwhile, the S3 had a software update and suddenly the photos looked dramatically better. In examining the S3's photo, I can see that a lot of it was tweaked by software - levels, saturation, sharpening, bias for higher ISO. Is the photo that much better? The S3's image is grainier, and a bit oversharpened in my opinion. The 920's image is softer - because of the extended exposure.

Now I can't even proclaim excellent image quality against the sea of other phones my friends have...

I think everyone who is saying the Lumia 920 is better obviously hasn't used a Nexus 5 lol. I don't have one, but I've used one before, and the pictures are pretty good. Maybe not as bright, but they are sharper (in low light). The nexus 5 also has OIS, so it's no surprise that it is good. Lumia pureview phones tend to keep the shutter open for too long, and unless you are very steady, the pictures come out blurry.

I have one and a Lumia 1020. The Nexus 5 has an excellent camera and even better HDR mode that doesn't make photos look unrealistic. My 920 took much better macros but the Nexus had overall better shots.

Man, I wish Nokia/MS would add a basic HDR built into the camera App. Just something to help with over/under exposures, like Android & iOS.

The 3rd party Apps are terrible, sadly.

you need to try camera360 and proshot, they are the best 3rd party camera apps and they are amazing. BTW, you can launch the default camera and then when you want to use another camera app, go to lens from the camera app. It makes things so much easier since your only a few taps away from having better filters and effects etc

90% of the time, taking 3 shots and blending them, turns out bad unless you use a tripod or have a place to rest the phone. That isn't always possible.

I just want to take 1 shot and have the ability to correct under & over exposed areas of full resolution photos, without needing desktop software.

I've played with ProShot, OneShot, 1 Shot, Camera360, Fhotolens, 4blend HDR, HDR Photo Camera and a bunch of editors.

Photogram from Samsung do that very well. :[

I have a N5 4.4.4 and a 920 GDR3/8.1, N5 seems better. Maybe someone should go back to portico and compare with the N5...

To be honest I never used the N5 nor will say anything about quality or which is better, but damn taymur so awful pics from a L920 weren't seen by my eyes till now.
I take often pictures with my nokia how lowlight so daylight, and can post some examples but so yellowish they have never been (wp8.1 + black here).
