My friends Nexus 5 shoots way better photos than my lumia 920.

so i got the shot from the nexus, this is the indoor one.

its there in comparison with a couple of lumia 920 shots.

i have no idea how to add these to be viewd without a link. :s

Lumia 920:
Wrong white balance, foggy image (may be smudged lens). Also, after Black update, the images tend to be highly proceeded with so much noise reduction at high ISO and greenish cast, now that's a valid downside.

Nexus 5:
Beside better White Balance and no color cast, I won't say it's a better photo :| Really smudgy details and not as sharp as L920 by miles. Are you sure he/she focused on right subject?

White balance can be adjusted to correct one.
Smudged lens can be cleaned.
Color cast can be corrected by PP or wait till Cyan.
But bad details and sharpness in photo cannot be cured after then.

Im taking up photography as a hobby and reading tons of stuff around the subject.

At the end of the day its all about composition, lighting, timing. Cameras don't make pictures, its the 12 inches behind the camera that makes pictures. Understanding the limitations of the equipment is of course a part of taking great pics. Give the great photographers any camera and you will see great pics, give a great camera to someone that doesn't get how to actually take a pic and you get ok pics at best. Don't worry about the equipment too much, invest small amount of time in learning basics of photography instead and your Facebook pics will be amazing.

I would very much with the argument that the sharpness on the 920 is better. But the colors are way of from reality.

I totally understand the fact that these could be fixed, but I'm an average Joe when it comes to photos, so I'm assuming the auto songs should be doing the work.

And last, after I saw the picture on the computer, I came to think that the Samsung screen of the N5 was playing some tricks.

Also the picture on the n5 seems to be reprocessed reach time you zoom in the phone.

totally agree with this... do you think the white balance is because of the powerful chip the nexus 5 has? its a way more advanced CPU.

Can I see some shots of both side by side? Both at max res and in same light conditions and Sam settings.

Forgive me I don't know how both devices take pics but I am extremely curious. Thanks in advance if you do.

The Nexus 5 took the photo with an ISO of 389 while the 920 with 800. A high ISO (800+) setting will produce softer and brighter photos. Try taking another photo with an ISO of 200 or 400 on the 920. That will produce a more realistic and clearer scene.

The problem is the firmware which handling the camera of the device, while the hardware of the camera looks good, however, the more they update the more it become a nightmare. That's something Microsoft need to solve now, I think the Cyan update is not improving anything at the camera because I had a chance to play with the Lumia 930 already.

Sample photo of Nexus 5, everything's auto:

Well, I don't think it has anything to do with CPU but mostly because of software issues.
Nokia ruined the photo processing from Amber and kept decreasing picture's quality since then till this Black. I really hope they fix it with Cyan.

Very truee. Pictures were easy better before black.

either way, those saying the nexus 5 beats the 720,820,920 havent tested it for sure
the nexus is no where even close ,its better than most other camera phones but nothing in front of the lumias or even the z10(i own all the phones i just mentioned-nexus 5 ,lumia 820,720,z10,dont own a 920)
im trying to post comparison pics but cant for some reason, gives me an error

In burst mode, the picture is not affected by the loss of quality of Black and Amber, the only way for me to use the front camera .... Since the photo is of low resolution but HD.

Please stop with these "losing quality". Someone here wrote an excellent clarification of the noise reduction process. You just have to trade blows to get a good picture, if that would't be the case raising sharpness in PS etc, would give you on any photo excellent quality but that isn't the case.
Every phone (even other OS's but they don't have preview enable before pp) when taking a picture have to do the pp to generate the best possible details as well as lowest noise.
Portico didn't solve anything, neither is it way better then black if you don't agree please be my quest and find in Lumia920 section where someone shoot Portico/Black picture and you'll see what " to much sharpness does vs some real detail " (except for black color, most of the time they get ruined).

Don't need. I did the test Portico vs Black:
You use front camera? If you don't show a simpsons, it's a miracle.

The problem of Nokia is in these factors:
-Loss of contrast
-Loss of "clarity" (let the black more defined, giving impression of sharpness)
-Loss of colors
-White balance
-Prioritize high ISO, even when you don't have to

It's called post-processing. Of course you will lose some quality (and Nokia Camera actually shows you how it's happening).
After you take a picture, the phone is processing the image, so the result will be a compressed JPEG file.
There are a lot of different algorithms to encode in JPEG, either software or hardware processing, and Cyan is supposed to bring improvements in this encoding for PureView devices.
If you want BEST PICTURES EVER - get a 930/Icon/1520/1020 and do RAW pictures, w/o ANY losses, and process them yourself.
Edit 1: The burst mode has a ton of noise FYI.

Burst Mode have noise 'cause is low-resolution and... is burst mode, hight ISO, etc. But look to colors...
And obviously this happens.
But the problem is that in the post processing GDR1 wouldn't let the yellow photo and impractical with flash.
Post processing should improve picture, not worse!

Look to these pics takens with GDR1-Portico, Lumia 720:

PS: Without any editing. Automatic photos.

Not necessarily. As I said, the post processing includes the compressing and encoding, so you might get some artifacts or another issues.

I've tried the camera of Nexus 5, Lumia 920 and Lumia 820. Nexus images are not in any way better than any of the mentioned Lumia pics.
