Official "I have the Surface 2" thread

Guys the new surface comes with all the updates installed or does it come without them and you need to update them ? And is the build quality flawless ? Asking because some users reported build quality issues before like volume rocker being loose , the edges not being flush and screen bleeding .

I don't know if new Surface 2s have all the drivers installed but there appears to be a fix for the driver problem. Please check the first post of this thread.

I mean when one gets a surface after opening the box and before start using it , does one has to update stuff ? ( not signing in ) the updates which so far Microsoft has issued iam asking about that . Or it's like iPad open sigin in and start using ? . And do all updates go through well ?

Yes.. it works without updates...but I went to update and it had over 700MB of updates. It finished everything without issues and there were no BSOD. *touch wood*

How long it took you to update the surface ?

Guys kindly bear me iam asking because Iam from India and will be traveling to Australia and might pick one from there , since the surface is not launched in India . I just need to be aware of things which I need to do when I buy the surface for a smooth and trouble free experience and suggestions and help will be highly appreciated .
Currently a windows phone user and ipad user , but want to shift from iPad to surface 2.

np. It took probably 30 min for me to update the surface. It does restart a couple times intermittently and then there is a updating firmware which happens as well at the surface boot. You will be right at home with it since you are a windows phone user.

Just purchased a Surface 2 with an included Type Cover 2 keyboard both in mint condition from ebay for $395! After comparing the 1st gen RT and the new Surface 2, I wasn't going to settle for the 1st gen, even if it's on sale. Plus, the included type cover makes it a bargain. Can't wait to play(and work of course) with my new gadget. Will post pics once I receive it!

Dang, that was a good deal. Good work.

Guys guys finally I was able to pick up the surface 2 in hong kong for myself . The only problem was I dint find any touch cover 2 or type cover 2 in black or purple in English all were in Chinese . So finally found a cyan type cover 2 so grabbed it .
My friends were zapped with the over all fit and finish look and responsiveness of the surface 2 I will post all pics tomorrow for sure .

I need to say thanx from the bottom of my heart to all lovely wonderful people of the wp central community who helped in answering all my questions . The surface 2 is dedicated to all of you , the wp central community . Thanx once again .

Ps - as Paolo suggested , I see a huge list of updates available and also see a drivers update issued on 11.2.2014 . So as per the recommendation I will uncheck all and update the drivers update first and then update the rest . Wish me luck hope things go smooth and nice . Thanx a lot once again . Truly excited .

So how do you guys get on with your Surface 2? I am really considering getting one. But my option would be a cheaper built full windows 8 tablet or a nice premium build RT.

Any reason you guys went for the Surface 2 over the pro? Other than price and battery?

Sure. Weight, thickness and active cooling are the 3 main reasons i'd take the surface 2 over the surface pro 2 anyday. Secondary reason is Windows RT, because it is almost immune against trojans and viruses. Finally price and battery.

Just ordered my Surface 2 today (with the cyan Type 2)!

Got my Nokia Icon last week. So.....Android phone gone - Check; Android tablet gone - Check.

I'm all-in on Windows now. Just makes my life easier since I use a Windows 8.1 computer for work.

Got it today...what a fantastic tablet! I punched in my Microsoft account and bang...everything including the apps was copied of my desktop.....sweet. Even the browser had all my passwords already. I was doing stuff I could never do on my Android.....and quickly. Good riddance laptop & Android tablet.....hello Surface 2. Oh...and great battery and I love the backlit keyboard.

Well, as someone has already posted - battery, security, weight. Much depends on what you want to use the Surface 2 for. As for me, I have completely dispensed with my laptop. Don't use it any more. I have desktop machine at home, which takes care of all the legacy app requirements that I have (which is not much, btw). Outside the house, I am always with my Surface 2. My primary use is Office and surfing. I am going to also start using it for watching movies when I get NetFlix next month. As per my current usage, I get about 8-9 hours of battery life (if I am on the web a lot the numbers are a bit less - say between 6.5 to 7 hours).

For me the Surface 2 has two short-comings. In order of importance (for me, that is): Active digitiser. This would have been fantastic to have. Eminently doable, of course, but for MS, I guess, it was a business decision (and a wrong one because it would have been a huge selling point especially for the education market). The second shortcoming is the aspect ratio. I say this with a specific intent. The aspect ratio of the Surface is fine for websites and movies etc. However, personally, I can't use it for reading. In my opinion, a 43 aspect ratio is best suited for that, which is also why I have an iPad Air (which I use ONLY for reading books - by this I mean, reading for work-related reasons).

I assume, that if the Surface had a 4:3 aspect ratio, it would also be it's short-coming, because it would be less than ideal for movies and games. :)

That's the thing. 16:9 is not necessarily ideal for movies and TV either. Many old TV shows are in Academy (4:3) ratio. Many older movies are in a much WIDER aspect ratio than 16:9. It's only recent (10 years or newer) visual media that is somewhat standard on 16:9.

The true benefit of the 16:9 aspect ratio, IMO, is the fact that keyboard covers can be wider. The keyboard of my TypeCover2 for my Surface RT is the same width as the keyboard on my 15.4" Macbook Pro. In other words, full-sized keyboard.

The weight distribution on the Surface is balanced pretty well. However, in portrait mode the wider aspect ratio causes more stress on the wrists because the weight of the tablet is further from the wrist... think: mechanical advantage, fulcrums, levers.

Obviously this is not a Surface-specific issue but one universal to all 16:9 tablets. I too find 4:3 preferable for reading... and it is one reason why I use my iPad 4 for reading.
