[Official] Initial thoughts on Developer Preview of WP8.1

I just did. Worth a shot as Whatsapp had been installed while I was still running WP8.0 . I have experienced issues with apps being already installed before upgrading. Fingers crossed!

EDIT: No luck :-(
Strange. Hopefully it is a temporary problem with your specific configuration, because I haven't heard this problem before and I am not experiencing it myself. Waiting for the actual update, I guess!

I hate the new browser, I can't stream videos in full screen on any site now. Only YouTube videos have a fullscreen button. Feels like browsing with my Xbox 360 all over again

IE11 is so... buggy and laggy.

The rest is okay... Sometimes though the icons on the app list and the tiles on the start screen do not appear as they should be. It's like the phone is having a hard time to load the UI or something like that.

For those experiencing problems when it comes to their phone's battery life, check the background task option in the settings. Then block the apps that you do not use that often. Just allow the ones that are important for you.

I have a 920 and my phone keeps dieing randomly.

Dying out of battery ?? Or you mean rebooting??
Of its dying due to battery.. Restrict apps in background which you'll find in battery sense app.

If it's rebooting.. Then that's battery problem... Use a paper bit and then insert a battery to make the battery fit better and tightly! :)

Its not a battery issue. it's an issue with WP 8.1
at 80% but it suddenly switches off or restarts. I have restricted backgound apps.

I am not seeing the battery drain on my 928 many talk about.

2 things I really wanted but didnt get. 1, abiliyy to label phone numbers and/or email addresses with custom labels. 2, some type of basic file manager to attach files to an email from within the email app.

The way they put photos hub...e.g what they did to online photos is shameful and what they did to facebook integration with OS In messaging and me hub is totally downgrading...it is just too much annoying...can't upload pics received from whatsapp...instead of being saved in whatsapp album they are running towards other album...don't know what MS is thinking

WhatsApp is built for 8. You will face issues on 8.1
Next time don't get the preview if you're not willing to face small issues like app compatibility

I love Windows Phone 8.1. My only complaint would be that my SMS while on Wi-Fi is gone for now since it's a dev release and a T-Mobile issue. The notification area and Cortana are the best features. I also love how much better everything syncs between my platforms (my phone, Xbox and laptop). I think that once the final release is out, a lot more people will jump on the Windows Phone bandwagon!!!

Notifications

Pull notifications are so substantially better in 8.1 than any other version of WP that I'm almost upset I had to sit through a) app limits, & b) notifications freezing when I had too many apps installed. Have any of you noticed greater reliability since battery sense started handling this?

I had to do 2 updates before 8.1 so it took about 2 hours start to finish but well worth the wait :)

App centre, reduced black space, skinned tiles and cortana are awesome

But I hate the new photos app. Previous one was perfect

wait for cyan, nokia is going to revamp the photos hub and make it useable.
Till then, use storyteller :)

I am a lot happier with my Ativ S now that it is running 8.1. The three columns of live tiles make the big screen way more usable. And of course a notification centre just like the grown-ups who use iOS and Android have is another boon.

I also like the way you can save everything to your SD card as before this was very limited. I have also started using UC Browser and what a revelation that has been over IE (11). Having Google search baked in is fantastic and means it is now possible to find things. If only MS would let us change the default.

My 920 is just like a new phone after upgrading to WP8.1

It's so wonderful, I love all these features: Notification Center, Cortana, Quick Switches, Start Screen Background and all. They are so great, keep going, Microsoft.

Check out my new start screen.

OMG Finally installed yesterday on my Ativ S and I'm blown away, this update is just epic, Internet Explorer which was fast before now is Iron Man fast, the Extra tiles and background is gorgeous, everything is better and faster. I didn't hard reset after the update and haven't experienced any problem besides the camera bug in the Ativ S (probably firmware related, to be fixed). Thank you Microsoft for this, now I will never go back to Android.
