[Official] Initial thoughts on Developer Preview of WP8.1

Re: My 920 is just like a new phone after upgrading to WP8.1

I agree, whole new phone!!! just waiting for more app developers to update the apps with transparent tile options

Re: Initial thoughts on Developer Preview of WP8.1

So, It has been a week or so since I installed WP 8.1 on my Lumia 1520.
Here's my highlights:
- A little bit faster, noticeably
- Update improved pixel density so some screen elements look smaller (and prettier), keyboard, for instance
- Manual update apps within the Store app
- Syncing across devices
What I do not like:
- Sure, it's not called "Preview" with no reason, but, often I occur battery drain issue (15% in less than 30 minutes, in standby). The issue is caused by some stuck background process(es), I am not sure which one(s). Restarting the phone knows to do a trick and stops battery drain, but than appears again from time to time.
- Once set, shuffle option in Music player resets to null anytime music player reopens (I've got the same issue on WP8 as well)
- People hub integration requires FB app to be installed in order to link FB account (I really miss this feature from WP8)
- p.s. Furthermore, maybe "What I do not like" is not the best expression, but, I guess you've been taking my meaning :)

Im on 8.1 and WhatsApp is not working for me.
People around me on 8.0 don't seem to have any issues. Is evrybody on 8.1 facing issues?

I love it, we can finally compete with the best of them pound for pound....and yes, my wife is annoyed with me since I talk to Cortana more than I do to her 😉

The way they put photos hub...e.g what they did to online photos is shameful and what they did to facebook integration with OS In messaging and me hub is totally downgrading...it is just too much annoying...can't upload pics received from whatsapp...instead of being saved in whatsapp album they are running towards other album...don't know what MS is thinking
You can roll it back to 8.0 if you need WhatsApp working as designed. Me personally? Am prepared for a few little hiccups, this is a PREVIEW after all. WP 8.1 Developers preview is brilliant, I cant wait for the full release. Well done Microsoft 😊

I am really liking the update. Running the Nokia Icon and it's humming along. The battery did have some issues a couple of days after the install but seems to have smoothed itself out.

Love the app auto update from the store. Really haven't seen to many issues that would make me want to go back. Love the clear tiles, love the speed, camera app is great.

Really the big apps I use are Facebook, Calendaring, Mail (gmail and live.com), One Note and runtastic. Few other apps but not many. I think once this is released with the carriers with firmware and whatnot it's going to be a real winner.

Believe the reason they are splitting all the stuff out is to make it faster to upgrade and better control of the apps, once this is out for a bit I would guess the devs will update the current apps and the phone is going to really make a splash.

Guys I have installed the dev preview on 720 but now the store doesn't detect xap files on SD card. Prior to the update I had installed asphalt 8 via xap. I even tried to install from a brand new micro sd but no luck. Anybody else having same issue? suggestions?

My detailed list of issues with the 8.1 DP

The lock screen takes about 3 seconds to power on after pressing the power button. Never happened on the first day, started happening frequently after the first day.

Extremely poor WiFi reception. I lose signal even when i'm relatively close to the access point. The WiFi icon reading also isn't accurate.

Purple hue screen in automatic brightness mode. My display goes purple, especially in grey areas such as the keyboard, when the display goes into the very low brightness mode while using the automatic mode.

False battery meter readings. I charged my phone to 100%, took it off the charger, took a 2 hour nap and the battery reading was at 90%. I soft reset and then the battery reading was at 100%. 10 minutes later with no use it was at 98%. 30 minutes later it was still at 98%. Another 30 minutes later with no use, 97%. 1 hour later with no use, my phone got really hot and went down to 80%.

Overheating with simple tasks. Even just using the messaging app will cause the phone to get warm. Playing games such as Subway Surfers, or taking pictures with the camera causes unbearable heat, after 3 minutes of use. Even just browsing the store heats up the phone.

Detailed list of issues with the 8.1 DP and a Nokia Lumia Icon - Upvote it please so they can see it.

I'm in the process of downgrading back to 8.0.

Re: My detailed list of issues with the 8.1 DP

Wait, before you downgrade try looking in Battery Sense and see what apps are draining your battery (and presumably making it hot in the process).

Re: My detailed list of issues with the 8.1 DP

The 8.0 OS/firmware is still downloading, so I just checked and nothing out of the ordinary was in use or in the background causing it.

Re: My detailed list of issues with the 8.1 DP

Ive had all of these issues too, i havent downgraded... yet. does downgrading remove everything?

This is my second go round with is.I had it removed 2 days ago, at the Microsoft store and a fresh install of 8.0 there. Then downloaded it again last night.

So far I am much more pleased with how it is doing.

One thing I would like to have is the phone dialer open up to the keypad instead of contacts when pressed..If anyone knows how to do this please let me know

Re: My detailed list of issues with the 8.1 DP

My 8.1 backup didn't show up in the restore list, only the last 8.0 backup, oh well. It's redownloading all my apps that were backed up then.

Re: My detailed list of issues with the 8.1 DP

I had the same issue on my Lumia 1020...i did simple settings.... Went to battery sense and disabled lot of apps... And made my email setting to every 30 mins... And voila my battery life was back to how it was. Try these setting before downgrading

8.1 Developer preview

So this may have been asked already but is getting the developer preview for 8.1 worth it? What works and what doesn't? And for a preview is it buggy or stable enough?I want to try it out but the fact that it can't be reverted is what fears me. And another question *sorry for many questions :p* but if I have the preview and then t mobile releases the update can we just update to it with the drivers updated included? Thanks ahead of time!
