I also couldn't decide if he should get a infraction or not. True, he was being pretty vicious but his rant didn't seem directed at any particular poster. More like he has some inner rage about this war on Christmas and picked the wrong place/time to express it.

I got the impression that he likes Christmas and doesn't think one's religious beliefs or lack thereof have anything to do with the word "Christmas". Since the date of the celebration predates Christian practices, those who are not Christian shouldn't care if one says, "Merry Christmas". On the other hand, since the date of the celebration predates Christian practices and no date is in the Bible for the birth of Christ, those who are Christian shouldn't use their religious beliefs to argue about Christmas.

In this instance I would just delete the off topic posts and warn them to stay on topic.

To the content what he is saying historically is true but much has changed sense the days of Saturnalia. If the intent here is to review history you must continue your research beyond one event. Advent is a holy sacred time that began with the birth of Christ and the beginning of the new calendar we all fallow today. I would be glad to debate this with anyone.


Bottom line is none of it belongs in that thread so delete the somewhat offensive comments and let everybody know to stay on topic.

The whole topic of calendars and history is really interesting.

I remember around 15 years ago I went on an art walk in a Cleveland neighbourhood. They have the art walks on the second Friday of every month. I was sitting outside a coffeehouse with my friends, since it was warm. We saw a bunch of people in a procession. Turned out it was the people and clergy from the Russian and Greek Orthodox Churches celebrating Good Friday. It wasn't Good Friday for me or my friends, since we're not Eastern Christians.

I'm sure you've seen The Deer Hunter movie. The wedding scene was filmed in that neighbourhood. The ceremony was filmed in St Theodosius Cathedral (Russian Orthodox), and the reception was filmed in Lemko Hall. My friend's aunt and uncle were extras in the movie and they helped teach the actors and actresses how to dance.

I've been in St Theodosius and 2 other churches during the art walks, since they gave church tours and discussed the history of the congregations. The other churches I saw were Pilgrim Congregational Church (I even went up in the choir loft and saw the organ) and St John Cantius (a Roman Catholic church).

10 years of Catholic school as a kid sticks one calendar in your head no matter how hard and how many years you try to get it out. But at least we have Mardi Gras.

Since I like history (I belong to a local group, The Historical Society of Old Brooklyn, which interestingly enough meets at Pearl Rd United Methodist Church, but isn't affiliated with any church or religion), I added the Christian holidays (Western and Eastern) to my Outlook calendar. It's interesting to see when Easter is the same in both Gregorian and Julian calendars.

I also know quite a bit about Jewish holidays and practices. I belong to another group, the Ohio Cemetery Alliance. That's a group dedicated to preserving and restoring old local cemeteries. The group leader is a Jewish lady who has written a book about famous people buried in local cemeteries. She also explains the symbolism behind a lot of what appears on cemetery monuments and gravestones.

We don't have anything as fun as Mardi Gras here, but we do have these awesome donuts called paczki on Fat Tuesday, since there are a lot of people of Polish descent in Cleveland.
