Another one edited in Lightroom.
I just installed Lightroom on my PC, on the trial month. I'll have to figure out how this thing works. A guy in my EAA chapter is a professional photographer and he said it is good for cataloging, and with more than ten years worth of digital photos, many in both RAW and JPG, I need some kind of catalog.

I've only been playing around with the sliders in 'Basic' and 'Detail' so far. The tab buttons for them are under the graph on the top right.

'Basic' controls all the usual contrast, saturation, exposure, etc. The clarity slider, like in Nokia Creative Studio, gives an HDR-ish effect which I love, but I try not to overdo it.

'Detail' controls the sharpness and noise removal. The luminance slider is the one that deals with the noise - it masks the noise by softening the image, so I try to go easy on it to prevent over softening the image.

Here is another of the same scene but at night.

I've been trying to take photos of the starry night sky with the Icon but it's being proving difficult. On my past Lumia 720 I would just set the shutter speed to 4 seconds with an ISO of 800 and get some good photos, probably thanks to the F1.9 aperture. So naturally I thought that the Icon would need a higher ISO setting due to the narrower aperture. However, after a lot of experimenting I am able to capture the stars with an ISO of 1600 and a shutter speed of only half a second, but the image has some aggressive noise, especially in the form of lines near the bottom. This leads me to believe that the Icon's sensor has the potential to have amazing low light photography even with the narrower aperture, which could be revealed with Lumia Cyan.

This is an attempt with said settings, edited in Lightroom to remove most of the noise. There was a good bit of light pollution so most of the stars weren't able to be captured clearly.

If anyone has been able to capture the stars well, post the settings that you used. I'll keep on experimenting too, and find a place with little to no light pollution.

I haven't had comparable location/conditions (after moonset, very little artificial lights, cool, high pressure) , but here: http://forums.windowscentral.com/nokia-lumia-928/226147-20.htm#post2154410 is what I accomplished with my 928. The settings from the original show: f/2, ISO 3200, 4 sec shutter. I very firmly braced the phone against the uprights of a gazebo.

Not sure how the aperture/sensor size differences would affect the same shot. I'll have to wait until this fall to get back to the same location. Would be interesting to try the same shots again.

When I set the shutter speed to 4 seconds I get what seems like a lot noise in the form of blue and red dots, but i'm not too sure because it could actually be hundreds of stars, because of the fact that I can capture the more visible stars with a shutter speed of only half a second. If the sky is clear tonight i'll experiment with a slower shutter speed.

Tip for pros:

-When using shutter speeds of over 1 seconds reduce the ISO in order to get better quality/ less noise, since there isn't a exposure meter built into our Lumias (not yet ;D ) you should practice bracketing, from what I have seen on my Nikon D3200 if you set the ISO above 3200 you'll get fairly noisy pictures (and I don't want to tell you how much time you'll spend on photoshop or lightroom), from my experience I would recommend to stay below the ISO 800 mark, going above may destroy your pictures, better use a long exposure shot with ISO 100-200 and last but not least, GET A TRIPOD!, believe me, this will improve your pics big time (or improvise! )

I'm still waiting for the international release of the 930 but these are pics taken with my 920 using the suggested tips:

WP_20140415_00_48_25_Pro.jpg
WP_20140505_20_56_32_Pro.jpg
WP_20140614_21_35_49_Pro.jpg

Look at how clean (noiseless) was the last picture?, that was taken at 9pm!, of course the color of the sky looks very unrealistic but that is an easy fix on photoshop!

P.D.: Moon pics were taken pointing the 920 trough my Canon's viewfinder and all images are unaltered, directly from my pictures folder.

I only use a higher ISO if I want to freeze movement in lower light. My above night shot was with the ISO at 100 and shutter speed at 0.8 seconds, taken at around 10 PM. I wanted to capture the scene as is seen through my eyes so I kept the shutter speed below 1 second to not overexpose it. The Icon's sensor is very capable and can't wait to see what Lumia Cyan brings. When I get a tripod I will be playing around with bracketing though.

Onto shooting the stars, it's been cloudy so I haven't been able to experiment further.

Here's a fireworks bomb burst that I took with my Icon. The settings were:
ISO: 100
Aperture: f/2.4 (this is fixed)
Shutter: 2.5 sec
Focus set to infinity
No flash (using flash would be dumb here)
The phone was braced against the arm of the chair I was sitting in, holding it as still as possible with two hands.
The photo was taken from somewhere between 1/2 and 3/4 miles away from the site where the fireworks were being launched. The only post processing is cropping and a little noise reduction in Photoshop. This is cropped from the high res image (jpg). I really need to change my phone to save the dng instead of the large jpg.

Here is one of my favorite spots close by where I live...it is nice to live on the fringes of the farming communities so you can take a quick drive and see this type of scenery.
