if you update through ur phone, your data will be kept. Using nokia software update, everything will be removed.

I tried Nokia software update for retail on my girlfriend's lumia. It works. easy to use but all of data will be erased.

Huh?

OTA short for "Over The Air". A new way to send updates to Windows Phones.
In the past you were always forced to connect your phone to the PC to get updates. Now most of them can be sent to your phone so you can be up and about and still get a update. A more correct word would have been UOTG... Update On The Go... but how cool sounds that?

I just downloaded Nokia Software Update for Retail, checked for update and it says I can update software to 1232.5951.1249.1007 and all data would be erased. But my current version on the left also say I'm on the same firmware already. so what does this mean I want to update to the new firmware.

the latest version is 1030.6407.1308.00xx. So I'm afraid that it still not available for your phone/region.

Nokia just announced the update for 2 days and they are starting to deliver. Maybe it still not available for all regions. You can come check again after few days or just leave it like that, your phone will automatically notice you when update available.

It must download the firmware to your pc fist, then install it on your phone. It took me about an hour.

I decided to flash mine anyway. Rogers firmware. Comes with the Storage Check app installed by default.
