And the fact that Windows 10 mobile is available on the Insider program for pretty much all Lumia (and some other) devices isn't proof at all then?

When things moved from Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8, everyone had to buy a new handset. That's not the case any more.

I'm not sure what you're trying to point out here.

Couldn't deny myself the joke:
Windows 10 mobile release will come in April - as new April hoax/joke :)
Ok personal I call a Lumia 950XL as my own, so I have nothing to complain.
I understand that Microsoft needs from time to time something to say to the press, so a "maybe announcement" comes quickly over the lips.
But it isn't ok to play with the believes of people, this gives hope, which is very fast destroyed, that kind of game shouldn't be played - no matter how serious the company is neither the company label.

The released product is the proof. It's my business phone, so I don't want to play with beta versions.
So the fact that one (sometimes rumored) release date after the other slipped and the fact that NO release date has been announced by MSFT, does not make me feel confident. I still can imagine that the drop one or the other phone from the list (as they did in the past already).

Again, MSFT hyped Win10 almost a year ago. And appart from betas, we have no proof, that WM10 will be eventually released.

... Perhaps Android- and IOS-users have the same feeling about their manufacturers; I don't know. One thing is for sure; if something "great" don't happens soon there will be a united escape from the MS mobile system.

That's the problem with Android is the fragmentation for manufacturers to release devices with no intent of updating them. Consider the Blu Selfie (just as an example, I do enjoy Blu though); it came out with amazing cameras, good storage, good RAM, great processor, etc. When it was first released I considered purchasing it. Alright, Android 4.4.2, 5.0 was due to be released (or was already I think), guess what? $300+ phone, never got upgraded past 4.4.2. This was a brand new phone and 5.0 was either released or released shortly after the Selfie was released. So what happens? They come out with other phones, still on 4.4.2 but no updates. Even some of the Lollipop ones probably won't get marshmallow, like the Vivo 5.

Whats the point? Security is an issue, since most patches are included with updates and certain updates have to be pushed by the manufacturer, the security isn't as good as it should be. The only way to get a guaranteed updated device is to go with Google's flagship products. LG was pretty good about upgrades until they started a huge line. Samsung is following a similar pattern, great phones, only their best get updates, the rest, they're starting to ignore. Huawei, HTC, etc. They're all starting to follow the trend for Android.

What about iOS? 2 devices after 1 is released (2 years generally) is all you'll get for iOS OS upgrades. I think its starting to follow more of a 1.5-2 year area.

What about Microsoft (Nokia) now? Most of their devices are planned upgrades, as long as they are running Denim. That's a huge range of devices. I had a 920 with Verizon (returned it 4-5 years ago), it goes all the way up to Cyan. I'm sure people are running the insider previews of Windows 10 on it. Granted it won't get it where it's only Cyan. Anyways, I'd rather have a device that can last me a while instead of questioning what the manufacturer is going to do. That's my personal opinion though.

Since Microsoft has not published a definitive list of devices that will be officially upgraded this is a big assumption to make. Especially considering that all WP 8/8.1 devices probably have officially been EOL for a while, hard to imagine they will be getting updates.

You know what, I hadn't considered that. You're absolutely right. I was going off the Insider Preview support. Hmm... =/ - I like the idea of convergence with support like older PCs get. Their EOL is still currently 1GHz CPU and 1GB RAM.

I just switched to a Windows phone a few weeks ago, having been on android ever since my second smart phone. (First one was HTC Touch Diamond lol)

Personally I am amazed at how brilliant day-to-day experience of WinMo is. Sure, it seems that specs are always at least a couple generations behind, sure I can't play Hearthstone or Vainglory on a windows phone, sure I need to pay to have access to all my google music library but my switch, and as a die hard android ******, this has been nothing short of great.

It just feels awesome, just having to unlock the screen and having all that relevant information right there, available at a glance, on beautifully animated live tiles. Until now I never knew just how stale and lifeless an Android home screen can be, no matter what widgets you use.

I also love all the contextual and always relevant shortcuts. Like you would be in some part of some settings entry and there's a tiny link at the bottom that says "related settings" I can't tell you how useful I find this. It just seem so much easier to navigate the WinMo system.

I've hardly ever used windows mobile 8, or 8.1 so I can't make an opinion on that. I had a L630 for a week and immediately fast ringed it and updated to .107. I even tried .1002 but that didn't turn out all that well. Then I traded that and a little extra cash for a mint condition L735. Now running build .1004 for a few days now and my experience has been almost flawless. Not one random reboot, maybe just a couple of app crashes, battery has been better compared to .107.

I dunno, hope I did not bore you to sleep by now, but with all the commotion about MS not delivering, I wanted to share an outsider's view. I am happy.

Now the surprises:
Mainly Lumia 820, one of the best midranger is included in batch 3, i.e., never getting the upgrade.. Don't know what is the reason..

Other surprises :
Despite of 1gb ram and snapdragon 400 processor Lumia 635/636/638 are included in minimal feature batch. at first Lumia 535 was considered in the first batch and now moved to 4th one. 730, 735 are also included in minimal feature list..

Lumia's best mid rangers 520,620,630,720 has been included in second batch.
