WC 1M Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So I did a bit of digging around on the Nokia 9. It checks a lot of boxes correctly but there are a few issues.
SD845 vs SD855
No MicroSD card support
Battery life might be on the average side (6" pOLED and 3300 mAh)
Also if pOLED is LG like Pixel 2XL we might have issues
$599+tax in CA means it will still be almost $180 more out of the pocket for me as compared to the S10+.

I might pick one up later or in a trade.

For me the older chipset and no SD support are really a non issue with 128GB of storage. You would obviously need to keep an eye on space due to the photo size, based on what mode you use..

Battery is another matter which is partially why I'm waiting on reviews for anything I'm thinking of getting.

Still, it's a nice device overall and the price is good. For those without a trade in...

I did a bit more digging specifically camera reviews. So here are my observations. The camera is pretty decent. Video is okay. Dynamic range is slightly off but definitely manageable. One issue that seemed bothersome was that because so much data is being collected by the 5 cameras that SD845 can't process all that info and so there's a separate Light (camera company) flux capacitor and it takes almost 10 seconds for the photo to show up. On the plus side the captured image does open up quite quickly in Lightroom and Nokia is going to have some good presets for post processing.

I'm still on the fence about the camera. Probably a few more reviews might shed some more light (pun intended) on this.

I personally wouldn't trust any reviews at this stage. The device hasn't been released yet and they may make some changes.

10 seconds for the big size photo is a long time though if true. It feels reminiscent of the Lumia 1020 camera. It is a lot of information. Really needs it's own processor.

You're spot on here. I'll have to wait and see what I observe when I actually get a chance to play with the Nokia 9.

I gathered one can take continuous shots and the processing runs unobtrusively in the background. Hope it does...

I haven't found anything that states this, yet. Have any links?

There's so many reviews...

All of them complained about the 845 chip, which is not surprising. CNET went 'yawn'.. like anyone cares what CNET says ..

One even said the processing time could get up to 30 seconds.

I read they're trying speed up the processing.

The most annoying thing is this appears to be a limited edition phone. So I may give it a miss for the reason alone.

I guess I'll wait and see. Right now my thoughts haven't changed that much. It's neat but that's about it.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Personally, I don't see what the fuss is...

The Nokia 9 is a concept phone, akin to the Lumia 1020. Same setup where a slightly older chip that was optimized for showcasing hardware. Just because the Lumia 1020 got on a few carriers last time didn't take away from it being a concept phone. Just because the 9 isn't going that route, doesn't make it any less of a concept phone.

The 1020 led to the 1520, 950 (XL), camera wise. I'd love to see a version 2 with a triple camera setup (1 color, 2 mono) with a lower aperture, and some other improvements as a wider mass market alternative.

I still plan to get one. I'm fine with compromises being listed. It's a niche phone, people. Could it have been cheaper? Yes. Is overall something like a S10 a better buy? Yes. It's an expensive concept, but in a landscape of super expensive stuff, it's tolerable for me. I'll wait a little, but I'll get one.

My thoughts on Nokia 9 are the same as the 1020. I wouldn't run out and get one right away, even if it is $100 off.

But if Nokia can parlay this into a better next generation phone then I am definitely interested.

I think in the sea of phones (that are mostly similar, to be honest), it's very interesting.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

One of my closest friend's dad is a semi pro photographer. I sent him a 920 to tinker with a few years ago and he couldn't put it down. I would have loved to gotten him a 1020 or a 9 test drive. He would have a field day with the 9, as even being in his 70s his camera eye is still razor sharp.

It's interesting for sure. I cannot wait to get one. I'd like to add a DSLR at some point but this would be a nice way to get me started. If I could fuse this camera with LG's video prowess, I'd be all set.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So I'm looking at LG's offerings and they drive me nuts.

Having used the G7, I agreed it was another solid phone in a string of solid phones (G6, V30). I'm not sure if they know who their target audience is. It's no longer enough to show up with solid hardware (G6, V30/V35, G7, V40). The improvements on the G8 are solid, but expected. I see they went the pizeo electric (see Xiaomi Mi Mix) to enhance the boombox style experience. I'm not sure if as innovative as this could be seen, who wants this.

LG has been targeted as a content creator's device with

I like their hardware. I don't think their software is THAT far off. But it seems they finally decided on a consistent look and feel and decided that being weird didn't seel, being similar didn't sell. At least with Sony (who is losing money like LG), they have decided on a sales pitch and are sticking to it. LG makes good hardware and they do just fine in the low to mid range (carriers love them). If Huawei and Samsung and Apple are giving great auto camera and solid video, decent to good battery life and more solid software experience, why buy LG? Their audio is very good, but I can see them dropping that. People talk about they should have kept removable batteries, but that I think wasn't going to help.

Should they go after oneplus? Not really. They have a lot of tools to be an affordable flagship alternative though. Their best gimmick was the wide angle lens - now everyone has one this year. Guess that wasn't a gimmick.

I dunno. Would I upgrade to a G8? Yes and no. It's an incremental one. A nice one to have. I can get a V35 for peanuts. I can get a US G7 for peanuts. I can get a US V40 now for a level above peanuts. Sad, really.

Good to walk out for some Tim Hortons coffee and fresh beaver tails

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So we moved to the house. Wasn't too stressful.

Biggest issues are sorting things to suit us. It's a furnished place. Some things work some don't.

Also figuring out what we need to get. Even though they left us stuff to use they don't necessarily have everything we need or what they have is broken.

I could go on but you get the picture.

We're currently unpacking and getting things setup. Internet is working so that's very good. It's nice to have good internet. (It's good, not great).

Anyway, it's nice and quiet here and the cat is happy so that's all good.

We're still only 40 mins to Paris but feels a world away.
