WC 1M Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Is it possible to get non - homogenised cow's milk in France?

Is goat's milk popular?
You can get goat and sheep milk, cheese (lots of different ones), yogurt, etc. Thing is if you're allergic to cows milk you're typically semi allergic to them as well. My wife has these things occasionally.

Are you taking about raw milk or just non homogenised? I think it's illegal here but people can get it. My wife is allergic to the actual proteins in milk so it wouldn't matter. She's tried all different things. Even A2 milk. She had a brief stage where she was ok but now it's pretty bad like it was when she was young.

No, I was referring to my own tastes. A local farm sells non - homogenised cow's milk in quart bottles. It's pasteurised, just not homogenised, so the cream is at the top. It has a richer, sweeter flavour even after shaking and pouring it, or as a treat one can eat the cream or add the cream to coffee.

I knew someone who wasn't allergic to milk but lactose intolerant. However, she drank goat's milk.

We drank goat's milk early on in our marriage but it's expensive and oh do the pounds pile on!

It's funny about lactose intolerance because I wasn't as a child and young adult. I got that way after major knee surgery (the 1st of 5 ??????) and I know 3 other people who've had similar experiences. Maybe it's something in the anesthesia? My wife's had 3 intestinal resections from Chrohn's Disease so it could've been anything. Yeah, we're a walking M*A*S*H unit.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I'll give you my opinion on all the alt milks as we've pretty much tried them all that are available here. I think the USA may have some others.

Hemp - by far the most disgusting tasting of the bunch. If you don't like soy you'll hate hemp. Not sure why anyone would drink this.

Soy - as I'm allergic to the stuff now I don't drink it. It's by far the best for cooking. Not the best tasting, though some are better than others.

Rice - not my favourite as I find it too watery but it's good for cakes and sweets because it's sweet.

Almond - it's nice but some brands can be stronger tasting than others. I think they put in almond extract. I personally find the taste can overpower in general so I tend not to use it. It's also one of the more expensive alt milks going. I've also tried other nut milks but can't remember which ones.

Spelt - not that common. Fairly bland and dark. Generally ok but pricey.

Oat - this is the one we use most. Mainly because it's bland and is closest to milk in taste. You can find various brands and they're all a bit different in taste.

From an environmental perspective all alt milks are superior to regular milk. All alt milks are about the same for environmental impact just different types of impacts. Though some would argue that the nut milks and soy have the bigger impact.

The variety of alt milks in France is good. However there were some other good dairy alternatives in the UK that haven't made it here yet. So hoping they come soon. A Swedish brand names Oatly makes some great products.

France is way behind in regards to vegan/vegetating diets. There is some movement happening in cities though.

This is mostly due to the traditional French diet which tends to be meat and dairy centric.
What about pea milk?

(Great list, by the way. The GF doesn't do regular milk and neither do I as it doesn't sit well on my stomach. I can do soy and almond. I cook with both a ton. I don't drink as much milk as I used to, frankly).

Pea milk hasn't made it's way over here yet.

I've heard about it though. It's supposed to be the closest to milk in properties.

However, we have tried food with pea protein in it and it seemed to upset both of our stomachs but I'm willing to give the milk a go just to see.

We've also tried cashew milk which is also quite bland but really expensive. Cashews are the vegan go to for most cream based foods.

We even tried macadamia milk. It was good but really really expensive.

We personally like the taste of oat milk, better than soy. The cost for oat milk is average. It doesn't have the issues that soy milk has, possible increase in estrogens, and is bland enough to be used everywhere. The only thing it lacks is the proteins that soy has.

I mentioned Oatly. They do a great cooking/dessert oat cream and a thick creme fraiche which is a good sour cream replacement. Not sure it's available in the USA or under a different name. It's not here in France, yet but their milk is.

The biggest issue we have here is milk in everything. Literally. So eating out is tricky.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Thanks for the heads up. My wife, daughter and myself are all lactose intolerant so we're always looking for alternative milks. Spawn of Satan loves almond milk so she's good to go. The missus and I drink organic LF milk which, of course, is quite the budget hit. I've never heard of oat so I'm definitely interested in finding some.
There's a joke in Finland. It goes, you know you're Finnish when you become lactose intolerant.

It's an immigrant joke but also sadly true.

I've known a few people with lactose intolerance. It's not pleasant.

Sorry got confused there.

I'd have to check about the milk. Even though France is full of cheese and cakes/pastries with cream. I find their selection of cream/milk in the shops is fairly basic.

Then of course there's butter. Their selection is quite extensive. Not as much as their cheese but a lot.

I can't get into goats milk. Tried. Interesting about the weight thing.

Sounds like the two of you have been through the wars...

My wife's allergy went through stages. She was fine between late teens to mid 30s. Now it's back with a vengeance.

The truth is most of the world population are either lactose intolerant or allergic to milk.

If you actually think about it, drinking milk is a bit strange. That's without going into all the issues with milk production and distribution.

I can't drink milk anymore. I can't handle the taste (won't say what it tastes like). I still like cheese and cream things but I try not to do that too often.

It annoys me that milk products end up in a lot of processed foods for no other reason than "mouth feel". Not that we eat a lot of processed food but even simple things like chips, crackers and French fries. It's ridiculous when you start reading the ingredients.

Never used to be this bad. The over production of milk and how cheap it is, is part of the problem.

So just some pics of the place we are renting, my cat and some first signs of spring. It's gotten a bit chilly again but still in the teens. Had to do some editing to brighten things up.

I don't like the fact that milk is added to processed foods that don't need it.

I do enjoy drinking milk daily, especially warming it up and adding malt to it.

That purple flower is lovely. It's only - 8°C here. I can't wait for spring.

One week into caring for a stray kitten that adopted my upstairs veranda a fortnight ago.
Scrawny little fella abandon by the mother...

In theory, we are only supposed to drink milk as babies - mother's milk, no less. Anything else (animal based milks, that is) after that just has the potential to mess with your constitution.

Enjoy when you get it.

Don't mind me in the corner setting up the two running timers (one for how long it'll take to read the mini review, the other for the reading the notice about its sale).

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I finally got the chance to check out the S10e and I have some thoughts.

The size is nice. It seems like a phone I can use with one hand thanks to the One UI.
The punch hole seems really minor and not a big deal.
I like it but I have never used a Samsung flagship before so I don't know if the choice could be regretful or not lol.
The demo unit in a bright store isn't really an ideal way to test the camera but it looked nice. The front camera made me seem kind of washed out but the store lights might have not helped with that.

As for if I can choose it over my X, we'll see. I got myself a S9 (for a fairly low price for it, that is) to test out a plan + another network. I'm hoping that my experience with the S9 would help me decide if I want the S10e or not. We'll see. On that note, I saw a shootout between S8+, S9+ and S10e in low light and the S9 seemed to be slightly better or just as good as the S9+.

I dunno. I kept the S9 for 4 months. I like it enough to be my daily driver. Hence the trade up to the S10.

You're a lucky one to get it early. I'm looking forward to hearing your thoughts and early impressions on it.
