Why does my Lumia 521 / WP8.1 randomly shut off or go back to start screen?

Lumia 521 / WP8.1 Randomly shuts off, or back to start screen

My phone will randomly perform a soft reset in the middle of whatever it is doing. Have not been able to recreate the circumstances that led to the event. Additionally when I turn the phone off it will come back on without turning it back on.

During the time on the internet it will for no apparent reason will jump back to the start screen, right in the middle of processing a page.

Please keep in mind that whenever these events occur there is no error message, it just happens. During my attempt to post this question the random back to the start screen occurred 5 times.

What is wrong with my phone?

Do you have a microSD installed? I had the same issue when I was running a 520, and it turned out to be a faulty SD card. Started out like you're describing, then I started losing data right and left.

If you have an SD card, take it out for a few days to see if it clears up. If it doesn't, then you may either need it updated or you may have a faulty phone.
