Windows Update Error 80240020

Well, fair warning, I tried workarounds and finally USB install, and ended up with a nice BSOD boot loop. Rollback worked, but my heart rate still hasn't fully recovered.

Believe me it doesn't work for everyone.

However, the advice above yours actually worked for me. Turns out there was no real error, just Microsoft that didn't want to give it to everyone at the same time.

So you're suggesting that the 80240020 error is actually to do with something on Microsoft's end, and it's reporting as a failure because it's Microsoft's systems that are holding you back from getting the update?

I would love for that to be the case!

That's actually what the MS forum admin was implying, but it was not clear to me how it works exactly. See the Answer post in the thread that I linked a few posts up.

I had the same problem. Got it to work by downloading the Windows 10 Tool (can't post the link because I don't have a high enough post count, just google it) and running that. Hope this works for you to

Don't know how it works for anyone else, but I never got a notification, I just saw under WU it had failed with that error code.

The other day, the folder of pre-downloaded Windows 10 'stuff' on (C:) went from 5.9GB down to 140MB... Without me doing anything. It then redownloaded the following day, back up to 5.9GB. No prompt from me at all, I just left it at 140MB. The upgrade again tried to auto install in the evening (without my knowing), and once again I had no notification. It failed again. My folder was essentially entirely replaced, and the failure still happened.

But I'm starting to wonder if all devices are now trying to automatically 'upgrade' (in fact check if they can upgrade) to Windows 10 on a regular basis, discreetly. To the majority of users, this wouldn't be noticed. Then perhaps, when Microsoft clears your device for the upgrade, it allows you through, with no error code. To most people, they'd only see an upgrade attempt happen once - when they go through the GWX app once they get their notification.

Just a theory.

If you use Microsoft's media creation tool to upgrade do you get a choice to do a fresh install of Windows 10 or a standard upgrade keeping files etc?

How do I locate or create this registry key Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\OSUpgrade]
Thanks
