920 to 830?

Just one word: Glance.

I love Glance on my 920 and wouldn't want any phone without. I am, like the thread-starter eying the 930 or the 830 as a successor to my 920, but the missing "Hey cortana" is keeping me from getting the 830 and the missing glance from buying the 930.

This, exactly, is what is stopping me from buying 830/930.

In the same boat, due an upgrade. Although the 830 seems great its not enough to make me part with the 920. Think I'll hold out for the HTC M8 for windows or new high end flag ship devices.

I think it's very stupid to shift from L920 to L830.
It's a downgrade no matter how you see it.

L830 is actually a mid range phone(considering specs & features) with premium price tag nothing more.
The Chipset is as strong as $200 phone then why you pay $250 more????.......better build quality & camera ?(seriously that make it worth extra $250)
L730 would be better choice than L830 because both are almost identical if you ignore screen size & camera.
If you remember L720 camera was better than L820 despite being larger. who knows this was again repeated in X30 series too,.

Anyway who want to buy L830 then buy it. It's your money after all.

Camera in 830 is anything but great - no oversampling and the low point is 1/3.4 sensor, so you can forget about low light shots, as sensor that tiny hardly gets any light through...

Why not go from the 920 to the 930? I have a 920, and I would switch to the 930 if I had to. However, I'm waiting to see what could be announced later this year. Nothing has made me want to upgrade yet.

I am in the same position, love my 920 (except for the crappy burnt screen) and will wait until march to renew my contract, hoping new MS/Lumia phones to arrive. However, right now I would switch to the 930 without any doubt.

I have the 925 and a side-by-side comparison with the 830 looks very tempting. There are a lot of improvements that are super exciting.

The only thing that would stop me from "upgrading" to the 830 is the processor. Not that I play a lot of games or anything, but the fact that right out of the box this phone is, in a sense, obsolete or at a dead-end. It won't get the 'Hey Cortana' functionality when that rolls out. While that might not seem like a big deal at the moment, this limitation makes me wonder what other upgrades I might not be able to take advantage of in the future.

For me, the processor is a deal breaker and thus not a worthy upgrade.

Steve, don't forget the processor is not the deal breaker most people make it out to be. Actually the GPU should be more a factor in the decision than the CPU. Windows Phone itself is a better OS than Android. People put so much attention on the CPU because they here all this talk about android phones getting the new S801 or 805 processors, but don't forget....LAGDROID requires such processors because the OS allows soooo many background apps that the user cant even control, unless you're truly familiar with the OS which most aren't. Even iPhone runs on a dual core folks... DUAL CORE... and beats the crap out of any android phone.
With that said though, the GPU, which is the important thing, is such an epic fail for me. The truly important decision maker was totally skimped on.
I've got the 925 now and I LOVE this phone. Ill probably switch to the 830 for the expand-ability factor (battery, sd card, etc...) and if I don't like it after a week Ill return it.

After reading all of these posts, the one thing I take away from it is that we have to ask these questions because we don't know what is an upgrade for a device. I've lost track of all the Lumia numbers and don't know the next logical step. The fact that i have a 920 and don't know its successor is the problem. Also, using numbers for devices but then not having them available in all countries makes things even more confusing.

I would love to upgrade from 920 to 930, but since NOKIA REFUSES to put a damn SD-Card slot in 900 and 1000 phones I see no option but to upgrade to 830.
I'm so tired of this anti-SD card nonsense! crApple can at least say they offer multiple storage option, what is NOKIA's excuse? That SD-Cards are "Uncool"?

As of now I think I will purchase (retail, no contract) an 830 to replace my 920 on ATT. Then whenever a real true flagship replacement becomes available on ATT I'll upgrade to whatever that is that with 2 yr contract.

Is it just me, or does the 1520 look like a 930 with a bigger screen, an additional SD card slot, and Glance? The specs look the same otherwise (SOC, CPU, GPU, Memory, NFC, QI), and it does support SensorCore and will support Hey, Cortana. Despite being almost a year old already, I may upgrade my 920 to the 1520 off-contract until the 935/940 comes out. (Or I may get used to the larger screen and upgrade to the 1530, should one be announced.)

I've looked at the 830 as a possible upgrade path, thanks to this thread, but I don't think it's the path for me.

I refuse to purchase a phone on contract with a GPU of nearly 2 years ago ("mobile tech time"). We are basically just now catching up with the Galaxy S4. As mentioned, CPU, clockspeed, etc, isn't the real issue but the GPU is.

I still love my 920. I don't see the 830 as a likely upgrade for me. In fact, it's gonna be tough to upgrade to anything on AT&T if they continue to kill Qi wireless charging. (I'm loving my wireless charging pads on the desk, by my bedside, and now mounted to my car's dashboard... bluetooth & wireless is a really nice combo!)

I'm waiting for the 1030 or 935. With that said, I'd rather sell my excellent condition 920 and replace it with a 730 then sell the 730 when the 935/1030 comes out. I'm hoping one of them will get SD card support.

So, with AT&T will they reverse their Powermat BS and have the 830 as Qi? I have the 920 Qi charging pad and the JBL speaker, which I ironically bought the latter from AT&T. Its the one thing that has held me back from upgrading.

I had thought about this too, specially as I recently cracked my 920's screen. I was really looking forward to the 830 and while it's a nice phone it's not that great for the price, I think. The problem is that if you're used to your 920, you can get a new one on amazon right now for $200. That's HALF the cost of a 830 for roughly equivalent hardware. If the 920 felt obviously antiquated the 830 would be a no-brainer, but at the prices each sell for (and the expected price of $400 or the 830)... 920 wins hands down, for me. If the 830 were $300... then I'd stop having a problem, but MS is still charging WAY too much for these phones. Ideally, this should be the lineup price in comparison to the current one:

530 - $99 should be $69
630 - $199 should be $159
730 - $299 should be $249
830 - $399 should be $329
930 - $499 should be $449

a little twist here:

How about moving from 820 to 925 - no 920 in India, no 930 either :( - skipping the 830

2 things that goes against this thought for me are:
1) Non-Expandable memory - My vote goes for - It helps
2) It is not a brand new release unlike 830

920 is an excellent phone and the differences are so slight I wouldn't bother
Snapdragon 400 is an already ageing series, I'd personally wait a little longer for Microsoft to push another phone with SD 410 or something similar

Nah, I wouldn't get a low end phone that will be out of date really quickly. I'm upgrading my 920 to the HTC one when it comes out for AT&T. I love those speakers.
