Does anyone know if the Icon has this same mechanism?

Good question, this is why im waiting.

In my opinion they could have done a solid state mechanism that reacts when you put the 3,5mm in, by creating a bridge for a current to pass through, or something more rugged at least.

I was actually reading on Verizon Wireless Windows Phone support forums yesterday, and another customer there that was previously experiencing this problem said it was resolved with a replacement device that had a new SIM card tray. According to him, Verizon Support identified the issue as related to a problem with the first iterations of the SIM card tray, which also explains why so many of us are able to hear again when we pinch the back of the phone near the top and to the right of the camera, precisely where the SIM card tray is. Congrats on getting your updated replacement and let's hope this is the real solution we were looking for!

I was having the same issue as described here. I did recently pull the SIM tray out and put the SIM back in a few times. When going into Settings audio all of my options are in fact greyed out so it doesn't look like it is necessarily the headphone jack itself. Same symptoms though where you can use a something plugged into the jack or speakerphone, but the internal speaker was not working. I pulled the SIM out again and pushed it in carefully and made sure it didn't go in as far as before. Rebooted the phone and the internal speaker was working again!

One thing I have noticed about the SIM tray on mine is it is very loose on the plastic cover and it's possible to slide the tray past flush with the phone; to the point where the plastic creating a divot in the phone. Right now the plastic on the tray is sticking out just slightly. As I'm typing this I think I've had this issue before and fixed it by reinserting the SIM as stated. (I was probably messing with the SIM when it started occurring) This is just the first time it really seems to stick out as being broken for a long period of time.

Hello there ! I had the exact same problem ! But i THANKS GOOD found a solution !
If you can no longer hear callers, cannot hear your voicemail, and are tearing your hair out trying to get any help from the obvious sources (your service provider, Nokia, your local store) - do not panic.

Call 121, as if you are making a vm call. While it is connecting, adjust the volume control button on the right of the phone. You will find that this volume control button operates on a 1-10 scale and is completely different from the one that is normally adjustable from the main screen, which operates on a 1-30 scale. Hopefully you will start to hear the recorded voice and all will be well.
Tell me if it works ! :)

Maybe the separate volume settings was causing the phone calls to be so low: set it to 10 of 10; seems okay. Have to check it on a real call to check.

For those of you who've sent your 928's into Nokia--do they send you the same phone back or is it likely to be a refurbished model? My warranty runs out in a few weeks so I've been considering sending mine in (which has been plagued by this earpiece problem since near the beginning)--but if I just get a refurb that's also likely to have the problem (since from the above posts it doesn't seem like they've fundamentally figured out how to fix this issue) and could have other issues as well, it seems pointless...

I sent it to Verizon a couple of times first and got refurbished models back that ended up having the same exact problem down the road. I believe Nokia actually fixed and returned the device that I sent to them, but not 100% certain. I can tell you that I have not had the problem again since sending it in to Nokia though, and it has been probably 6 months now.

hI gUYS,,,The below mentioned steps worked fine for me,,,I believe it 's a frequent bug in Lumia devices(specialy the jack issue). Thanks alot

IF it will not help you out, u must go for the Jack replacement as its an internal speaker problem.

"Hey guys my name is Chris, I think I found a bug in my Nokia Lumia 928 device. I also found a solution 😃. Anyways

symptom : Internal speaker will stop working. When you make a call you can't hear anything but they will hear you just fine. Changing to loudspeaker you can hear everything just fine. Have not tries headphones or Bluetooth.

Cause: If you recently played music through 3.5mm jack and change settings under (Options>audio>) if you touch the the two settings DD or audio normalization. The next hours or day you will stop receiving audio from the front. Restarting the phone will not fix it, holding volume and power key won't fix it either.

Extra: Those two settings that I mention earlier should only be available if your phone is plugged via a 3.5mm however if you're experiencing this bug you can turn them off and on, even if those settings are suppose to be grey out because you are not connected to a 3.5mm cable.

Solution: plug the 3.5mm cable back again, go to audio settings and change the settings on and off. This time when you unplug the cable those settings should "grey out".

I had this issue more than once. The settings are under (Settings>Audio>enhancements)"

By plugging in the headphone and then turning the headphone off does work to let the internal speaker work but it only last a few seconds and have to do it again and again. It keeps saying that the headphones are plugged in and causing the internal speaker not to work.

I had this problem too (Lumia 920)...I can hear if I put it on speaker, but I can't hear if it isn't (and they can't hear me either). I tried everything else people in this thread tried except actually taking the phone apart (that was gonna be a last resort), but what worked was calling the 121 number and adjusting the volume up and down 1 to 10. WHY did that work??? It makes no sense to me, but it did!
