Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

I just enrolled into the Developer Preview Program, it's gonna be so awesome to get WP 8.1, glad i saw this thread!

My Lumia 920 is updating to a new update, i guess it must be a newer version of GDR3, then the one that came with the Nokia Black update :)

Can anyone confirm about this update after installing the black update and enrolling in the developer preview program ? I've often heard about it, but no one has told what it exactly is. And i'm pretty sure that it's not a newer version.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

Oh great ! I know that it comes similarly to the normal update, i was just wondering whether the lack of any new firmware would mean the old nokia stuff goes too. I think it's closed then.
And any chances that the old nokia firmware (which is installed since the black update) has some incompatible stuff with regards to 8.1 ? (haven't heard anyone mention it, but it does strike me that backward compatibility might be lost on some things)
There is always that possibility when updating software. But I've not seen it happen yet on WP8. Consider this - when they update the OS, Microsoft has no guarantee that the OEMs or the carriers will change anything on the firmware or their software. So it makes sense that the updated OS will be compatible with the current firmware.

Remind me to sign up for it when I get home as well! Can't wait for 8.1 goodness!
Hey, Daniel - sign up!

Well your logic sounds true to my testing ! ;)

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

As a relief to everyone, a video has been up on youtube since a day or two, which demonstrated that changing regions can get cortana working. That's a great thing, and by my eye, that video seemed 100% genuine.
Another thing is that changing region isn't a bad deal, I've set my region to usa since 3 months (I'm in India) because it offers me a much better store and search experience. (all

While this may work, consider that with accents even English-speaking people around the world may have trouble with Cortana. I hope that Microsoft's SR is better than Apple's, but I have a coworker who has an iPhone, as does her daughter. Her daughter grew up here in America, so sounds like an American. My coworker grew up in England, so doesn't sound like an American. My coworker's iPhone has to be set to English-UK for Siri to understand her, and her daughter's has to be set to English-US. Siri does not recognize speech very well at all if they try to use each other's phones.

I can confirm that when I signed up for the Dev preview and checked for updates (I did this Tuesday 4/1), I got a different build of GDR3, 8.0.10521.155, and from Microsoft's site, it looks like that's the newest version:

[h=3]Update 3[/h] OS version: 8.0.10501.127, 8.0.10512.142, 8.0.10517.150, or 8.0.10521.155

I haven't noticed any difference since updating, but that doesn't mean there isn't something different under the hood...

Well that's strange, why would MS publish an update and nokia etc not send it to us consumers if they dont have any firmware to add ? Does anyone know the reason ?

This is not at all strange . You will get early access to all Microsoft updates by signing up for developer preview, .155 update is part of them same :)

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

I followed the steps and my Nokia Lumia 810 detected an update (previously it would not). After going through the install process, the software version being shown is Amber, I was expecting it to be the GDR3 / black!

Using the 'phone update' is not detecting any new updates. So how do I get to GDR3? Is there a way to install via the 810 connected to PC?

The preview program gives you the updates to the OS, but not any firmware or software updates made by the OEM or the carrier. According to Nokia's status page, the updates are not available for the 810, so you won't get Black.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

Wish I had done more research before signing up for the Dev Preview ... waste of $19. I was under the impression that via Dev Preview, it would over-ride the carrier updates!
I was only into like 6 months having bought this phone that they said that it is EOL! Actually I haven't finished the 2-year pay by month! :(

Who told you that we cant getcortana by setting our search and browser language to US English?

I saw developer SDK videos. In 8.1, there's only one option for region, not 4 like WP 8.0. So region for search cannot be changed and kept separate from overall region

If I enroll for the Preview program, do I get the Lumia Cyan update after it's release?

I don't want to miss my NOKIA Update for being impatient :p

You will.. don't worry 😁
you will experience the Dev preview first and once Nokia is done polishing its Cyan update you can then unregister your developer account then hit update.

😁

You could also choose to use the "Register as a developer with App Studio", thats free and i did that..

Will I lose the special capabilities of my lumia when I run RTM 8.1, until nokia releases cyan? Glance particularly worries me. Thanks!

no you'll keep the features from amber or black, whichever you have when you enroll and when your carrier releases cyan you'll get that. If still on amber you may get black to when your carrier finally approves the update

hey its not a beta !!! It might have A LITTLE bugs, but its certainly not a beta. And i think student dreamspark isn't required, nor is dev unlock. What is required is a windows phone app studio account, and then you have to install the preview for devs app from the store. Then you're good to go. Read the first post's edit portions on this thread.
