Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

Just expect it to be like every other update. Some people have problems with each update, but the vast majority are fine.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

I have. On four phones.
every phone I've had since they started calling it Windows Phone 7 Series, the prototype, the HD7, the Lumia 710, Lumia 920, Lumia 1020, wife's 1520, and tomorrow, my 1520. Not WP but the wife's 2520 too.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

Just discovered something from the Nokia UK warranty statement for all Lumia's.

"?This Limited Warranty does not cover user manuals or any third party software, settings, content, data or links, whether included or downloaded in the Product, whether included during instalment, assembly, shipping or at any other time in the delivery chain or otherwise and in any way acquired by you. Nokia does not warrant that any Nokia software will meet your requirements, will work in combination with any hardware or software provided by a third party, that the operation of any software will be uninterrupted or error free or that any defects in the software are correctable or will be corrected."

Therefore, the warranty did not cover the Windows Phone OS in the first place, and thus the warranty cannot be voided by the OS being updated to a new version. Case closed.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

I think some people are confusing this release with the typical beta releases done by Apple with their iOS releases. Those are extremely buggy and tweaked over many months. You could seriously risk the function of your phone if you risked getting the first beta (I always waited to the second or third update before downloading).

Windows phone is slightly different as the release to developers coming next week is the gold master released to the other phone manufacturers so they may optimize their WP specific apps or any hardware adjustments that need to be made. Apple doesn't do this since their iOS only works on their phones.

I'm downloading next week with zero concerns about it working smoothly until Nokia updates my 1520 further in a couple of months.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

So if i install dev. preview and recieve an official cyan nokia update later, will there be a way to noice that i used dev. preview. I guess it shouldn't be because i have official general release.
I am asking because i bought phone in a local store and i know they used dev. preview as an excuse to void warranty.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

Well, I have read everything in here including the comments, and may I say thank you to everyone who participated in informing people (including me of course) about this method of getting the latest software running on your device.

I need to ask a couple of things, and I am sorry if they were implied in any comment, but I kinda need a straight answer for me to just make sure of everything:

1- If this update caused any problems / had some unforgivable bugs, will there be a way to revert it to how it was (will doing a hard reset restore your phone to the firmware and os version it had before the update?)

2- Many asked about the glance screen app working, but I have a deeper question, since I know that some of Lumia's updates are even related to the core of the OS, so will this update affect any Nokia changes to the OS? Things like the Nokia camera SDK that is found in the Lumia 1520 for instance and how it makes use of the 20 MP sensor. Another example is Nokia's storage managing apps that required manipulating some deep leveled stuff at the OS. Yet another example is double tap to wake up, and screen sensitivity which also required lots of work changing the OS to adapt to new hardware. Will any of those be affected by this update since it's not Lumia-specific and probably doesn't contain all the changes that Nokia made to the OS itself?

Please anyone who knows exactly about these two things inform us.

Thanks again for this informative post.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

Ok...time for a real newb question..

I've flashed custom roms, boot loaders, radios, themes, and all kinds of different components for my androids before...and 1 thing I have found is there are differences in some of the firmware in that you're liable to get differences in signal quality on each upgrades that are put out with Android...is it the same with WP updates?

I am asking because right now I have awesome reception..and am a little worried about borking this by taking it. So..will it change mine..or leave it alone?

I don't know how WP works with this as compared to Android..

Thanks

Mac

1) (answered many times) NO! You can not revert to a previous install once you update.

2) No

1) As stated above, no...once you have it you can't go back

2) Nokia has already updated some of it's apps for 8.1 (Glance for example was updated a month ago specifically for 8.1). The ones that weren't specifically updated don't need to be and at most will simply be optimized for use with 8.1 features.

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

1) Can I reinstall the preview incase of bugs .. I mean like flashing the phone or something like that ...
2) Also ,once nokia releases nokia cyan will I get the entire update or the portions that nokia has updated ??? Because incase of any bugs that nokia will fix , will my phone get those bugs fixed in the official release or will those bugs remain ???

Re: Developer Preview Program - What Exactly Is It?

the only one that caused any worry was the first time I did mango, the rest were smooth
Mango didn't concern me. I was puzzled, though, because I wondered the relevance of your first post.

Correct. Further, if the update isn't the cause of a hardware problem (warranty only covers hardware problems) the update can't be used as a reason for declination of a claim (I used to work for one of the largest insurance companies in the world, and I worked specifically in an extended warranties department - for a couple years on electronics and for a couple years on home warranties).

1 - officially, no. Technically, yes. There are people who have flashed from Nokia's site (can't think of the name off-hand), but I have not done this, so I can't say anything more on the subject other than it is possible. Don't, however, take this as a guarantee.
2 - no, they should not.
