GsmArena's review of WP 8.1: We didn't do our homework properly

Again, give me 5 reasons why You or other people THINK they need a file manager in Windows Phone and it would be things you CANT do in the OS.... Otherwise your argument is completely void. Everything CAN be done in the OS, not like Android. Again, sure,I have NO problem with adding new features are good, no problem with that but, features that are NEEDED.

These features are NEEDED! Or else why would multiple people be arguing for one? The exclusion of one is odd because every other OS allows file managers. It would be an optional feature just like every other OS. Don't need a file manager? Don't use it! That simple.

so u live in silicon valley? :P
file managers are a boon for pcs not for mobile devices, what do u need one for?the os is perfect for sending files etc

Actually I use Pocket File Manager regularly. So the need is there. Now if MSFT can do better than PFM then I'm in. It is IMO the most capable file manager for WP.

REGARDLESS, Android allows file managers and they are fully featured. Same with iOS, and BB10. WP8 is the only OS right now that does not allow fully featured file managers.

so whats wrong with using aerize or pocket file manager? same thing right

its not a NEED , its a WANT , the NEED is bug fixes not file managers
alright ill ask u a simple question why do u want/need (whatever) a file manager?

dude like i said before, stock android doesnt ship with a file manager either, pocket file manager and aerize work fine just like es file explorer on android , whats ur point?

lolwut ios has a file manager?? it doesnt even allow third party ones properly and needs a jailbreak for one
wp8 has aerize and pocket file manager, android also uses third party ones
the only os with a file manager inbuilt is BB10
so how is it a limitation for wp8?

Can you explain how File Manager is risky?
or
the only logic you are using is that Android have File Manager that is why it is risky?

no u are misunderstanding
let me break it up for u
if wp8.1 gets a file manager with full access like android, people will study the exploits and enable piracy like on android or will start hacking or using the exploits in scam apps
note i said "full access" since u mentioned full access to the file system like android

But I am not alone who want File Manager. So what's wrong with :"we" word?
OS have issue in organizing files.
I am keep telling that if you don't face issue that doesn't mean others don't.

Moli Player only play's video doesn't organize them. and it's cost $3 (completely free on Android)
You have quite less video. That is why you are saying this.
Right now their are 37 videos in my phone(including personal, documentaries, movies , tv shows etc)

Tell me how I organised them in Moli-Player? 37 video is little long list to search particular video.
That's just video you are talking? What about rest.

how I am going to organize 53 documents in my phone(Excel, word, ppt, pdf)?

so wait u bought an expensive lumia but dont want to spend $3 to some hard working dev?
to organise docs, pdfs etc office works fine
the reason moliplayer is free on android may be because the dev knows people will anways pirate his app
ive heard of very few people who get paid apps from the play store

I agree,if one needs a file manager,download 1 and use it.

The issue with these individuals who claim this is needed have yet to explain" why " Are they wanting or are they needing to be able to do something that a 3rd party app can't do?

I'm coming from Android,a custom rom rooted GN 2 and had a need for a good file manager..so bought Root Explorer..It's the best one I ever used, but,is something like that really needed for WP ? I don't see the need for it.

If I were going to ask for something to make this phone better...I would ask for being able to do custom themes, dialers, being able to change the app list section, create folders move things in and out. Hell,I want my phone to open up to the keyboards instead of to the logs first...I can think of many things that will draw more folks to WP over a file manager...like being able to modify the pull down menu change the status bar..How about having the ability to do a full back up and flash/restore from the phone like IOS has or a rooted Android..with CMS ir TWERP..

File managers are important but if this OS is going to be the best available, they need to be able to let folks have a means to easily restore their devices first.

Rant over

Like I said it is optional. You can use one or not. That's my point. If there is a file manager would you all of a sudden stop using Windows Phone? If the answer is no, then this argument against it is stupid.

Oh..and I'm not talking about having to hook it up to a computer to do this,I'm talking about on the phone. Being able to flash back to stock,or to a saved configurations be it stored on the cloud or SD card..

False. WP has a much smaller user base therefore of course there will be less exploits and scams than Android. Full access is a file manager just like Android WITHOUT root access. This insinuation that a file manager pushed piracy and exploits is a poor excuse.

it allows read access though not write access

It does allow write access. I can edit folders, add and delete items straight my RAZR M's built in file manager. It's on KitKat that write access acts differently with micro SD cards.

Having just write access is useless to the majority of users. To power users totally different story.

The issue is how much control Microsoft elects to give to everyone.

The mechanism has to be in place first to be able to restore easily then having a fully cooked FM will come.

Bricking these phones is easy, all one has to do is go over to XDA and look at what comes from it.

Since many WP have no SD cards, having a cloud based restore is needed,as well as being able to do it to a pc/mac too...so a to notch FM should be made available..but having one first without being able to restore is not the best way to go IMHO.

alright ill ask u a simple question why do u want/need (whatever) a file manager?

To access files NOT supported by the Music and Photo apps like the RAW DNG files that the camera saves photos as. I can upload them to OneDrive via PFM and then delete them off of my phone.

File manager will be a big drawback for developers as side load of apps might be possible (we have seen this on windows mobile)
Chances of having malwares on our phones will increase.
There are sure possibilities of someone trying to root their phones.
iOS has strictest access to internal folders and with the highest list of apps, we donot see much request for file managers.

If at all Microsoft develop a file manager for the WP OS, following will be the suggestion:
1. Any access/change to registry will factory reset the phone
2. Any side loaded app detected will also factory reset the phone and/or format the sd card
3. Only access to music, pictures and documents on the phone, for file manager.
4. Moving apps from phone to sd card (and vice versa) must be through app menu. Press and hold on the app in the app list and popup menu should have option to move app from phone to sd or sd to phone, based on current location.
5. Any new SD card when inserted into phone without the windows phone format must be automatically formatted.

All the above will be good to keep the OS safe and we can also enjoy the benefits of file manager.

why would someone buy a smartphone without internet? :O (serious question)
if u mean when internet access is low, then internal memory is always there

Do you have 4G in your country if yes how much it cost.
The short story is that for cloud based storage need fast internet access with cost effective price and right now most of countries don't have.

Do you need a cortana like feature which is only for US.
