the post was for dmc_wp who post:

"The SMD flashtool seems to just hang for me - I've tried versions 3.2, 3.33, 3.47 and 3.54.
The phone is running:
OS 8.10.14157.200
FW 2424.15.3.2
Any suggestions? It hangs as soon as I plug in the phone in download mode. "

but I forgot to quote :)

This guy should install drivers by using Windows Update. For newer downloaders I recommend ver. 3.5.

I have an ATIV S with OS 14157 and 2424.15.3.2 f/w. Can I just modify the registry to get GDR2? And then can I change the registry back to what it was and keep the GDR2 or if I hard reset it will take me back to GDR1? One last thing, any problem with not having a firmware with GDR2? Or GDR1's firmware works fine with GDR2?

No, you don't go back to GDR1 if you do hard reset and if you do hard reset your registry is as factory default.
For me works fine GDR2 with 2424.15.3.2 firmware

@romo11,

What device do you have and what OS is it showing?
I ask this because this is my case scenario, with a AT&T Lumia 920 (of course) with no SD slot..I presently have GDR 1-->OS: 8.10.14219.315, which technically is still Cyan Firmware: 3051.5009.1425.2001
Now AT&T has recently pushed out the official Denim update (for the Lumia 1020)--->OS: 8.10.14234.375 and Denim firmware: 3051.5009.1451.1001
In theory, once the Lumia 920 gets this Denim update (official), then I 'should be able' to install Windows Insider, opt for Fast Ring, and (hopefully...lol) it should then give me the option for 8.1.2 GDR 2..
I have already tried to upgrade via Fast Track with my present (above mentioned) OS: 8.10.14219.314-->It takes me directly to Windows TP 10 build....which I do Not want..!

So you are saying there is no risk in changing the registry, right?

change of registry is only temporary, until to first hard reset
is pretty safe but I can't tell is no risk, I don't know what is happens if you change wrong registry, another registry than are specified in guide or with a different value than specified in guide

Yeah, I'm saying if you follow the guide. Ok, I'll give a shot. Thanks

gahbmwm: I have Ativ S, of course. Last FW ...15.3.2 and 8.1....341 WP (ATO). With PfD and Insider apps. It offered me directly W10.

you need to hard reset your phone before follow the guide
I was on PfD and insider and after hard reset I follow the guide and get 8.1.2 version 8.10.15137.148

So only to be sure, I have to downgrade to 8.0 CMJ1 ATO. After pass through all upgrades. When finished I have to run Insider app and receive 8.1.2, after do hard reset to prevent upgrade to 10. OK?

not necessary, you can hard reset your phone and then follow the guide
p.s. after install PfD (step 4) don't open the application, don't enroll in program, simply go to step 5
after update reset the phone again

I followed a similar procedure to get the Italian Cortana and fix the firmware update problem, I didn't trust Samsung to release a fix/new firmware soon and I preferred it this way.
Yet, this time I'd rather wait for an official update (pfd/insider) for Ativ S without messing with the registries again as the issues between Microsoft and Samsung seem to be somewhat fixed and I expect to receive the update to 8.1.2 soon enough.
I will still be able to follow this guide in a couple of months if I am proved wrong
:winktongue:
