Placeholder: I'll give this a shot in the morning on my 635 and may be the 830 too. Want to try something here and hopefully it'll work.

Edit: Did the registry edit and its currently going through the preparation process on my AT&T 635, looks kinda slow

Edit 2: The process kept on failing (unable to open update) so I had to reset and currently updating to 14129 and will start with that OS

Edit 3: Finally managed to get Update 2 on my AT&T 635 on Cyan firmware

Edit 4: And the biggest LOL moment....I was able to install a non-AT&T Denim firmware on my AT&T Lumia 635. Now I have Denim + Update 2 on my AT&T Lumia 635...finally equalizer! LOL. From the numerous posts on xda-developers, I don't think anyone has managed to do this yet. I guess this is a big break through... (it might not work for RM-983 and RM-940 devices without damaging it).

Edit 5: Just for fun, I impersonated a bunch of Lumia Devices (930, 1520, 640, 830, etc.) and managed to download & install some non-635 approved apps (Glance, Hey Cortana, Lumia Camera Beta, Lumia Camera 5.0, etc.) which I knew would not work and as expected, they did not. The only thing that worked was Lumia Moments and Lumia Camera Classic...its faster than the slow Lumia Camera w/ Denim on the 635.

Edit 6: I was able to flash back to the LTA ROM and now the unlocked, unbranded US variant. Back to Update 2 or may be even 10

I too have followed all steps, PfD app installed to card, CustomWPSystem installed to phone, unlock SD card permissions, select customPFD XAP, I am stuck at when I touch apply, the app just exits back to the home screen instead of actually doing anything.

I also have a headache now.

you put customPFD XAP on SD card?
did you perform a hard reset? some people succeed after a hard reset, especially if they was on PfD or insider program

yes, customPFD XAP on the SD card.
I flashed the phone with current firmware before starting, so that should have been better than a hard reset.
It is an AT&T Lumia 635 gophone. OS 8.10.12397.895 Firmware 01061.00070.14246.29017

I have gone through this process like 5 times now (fooling around with the registry lol) and every time it worked. I guess I may have to write up a walk through guide for Lumia users since this may be the only solution to install non-AT&T ROM on AT&T devices.

Would be nice also to figure out how to do it without an SD card, as I also have a Lumia 1020.

Edit: Looks like even starting with a new flash, a hard reset was required. It worked this time, I've now unbranded my Lumia 635. Thanks for all the help.

OK, let me describe a very similar situation, using a Lumia 1020.

Back when Windows Insider first came out, it could be "hacked" by using fiddler to install the W10 preview on phones other than what was on the list. I discovered while experimenting that it was in fact a rudimentary registry editor. I created a "flight" to change the registry on my 1020 changing the PhoneManufacturerModelName from "RM-877_nam_att_205" to "RM-877_nam_usa_957" and the PhoneMobileOperatorName from "ATT-US" to "000-US" so that it matches the unbranded RM-877 as sold unlocked from Microsoft. This all was before Denim was released for either variant.

I would have thought that by now, I should see a Denim update available, and it would be the one for the usa_957 variant, and that it would accomplish what doing the regedit + update did for my L635 a few days ago (thanks again panka!)

Unfortunately since all of that, the Windows Insider has gotten updated so the hack doesn't work anymore, and I used it to get the 8.1 update 2. That's the only thing I could think of that might get in the way of it finding a Denim update - does running Windows Insider make it impossible to get future firmware updates?

Any other ideas of something I could try?

And I presume your phone is Samsung ATIV S i8750 or?
