Nokia doesn't have a billion to spend on camera technology. Super LCD2 is arguable the best screen in the market and at that size the ppi should be nothing sort of mesmerizing. I wouldn't call Nokia for better screen yet.

R&D spending 2011

Nokia 7.3 billion$
HTC 550 million$

I actually think the Ativ S will win the sales war pretty easily, especially if the Ativ tab 10.1 sells as well as I think it will at futureshop, bestbuy, and the Samsung stores. Once they hear that there is a phone version and it is by the makers of the Galaxy S3.

Heck, if Microsoft was smart, in one of their ads they should just let slip that the Ativ S is a superior version of the Galaxy S3 and basically the Galaxy S4 and watch the sales pour in. Samsung would be pissed but it would probably work. LOL

Maybe so in the US, but not worldwide. IMO, the ATIV S doesn't stand out enough against it's Android counterparts; it fails to pull in a different type of consumer. I'm not saying there isn't a market for this type of device within the WP market, it's just the average consumer is still learning that 'Samsung' isn't 'Android' and 'Android' isn't 'Samsung'.

For me, the Lumias will pull in those Apple and Galaxy S people who want a true change. Being completely different is a strength to play on... one the HTC have acknowledged. I still predict the 920 will outsell the 8X though (worldwide)... the screen, camera and marketing is going to own.

Excellent point Big Supes. Unfortunately , the trend in the market IS Android = Samsung and vice versa.
And its the same with Lumia just like u mentioned. Somewhere, MS needs a face. And somewhere, Lumia is that.

I disagree, people like Samsung because they build a reputation. That's why the GS3 is doing so well, people associate Galaxy 3 with Great phone. The ATIV might be something like that.

Of course, sales will depend on Samsung advertisement, and considering that their WP8 unveliend was in like 3 minutes inside an android conference I don't have much faith.

I'm not sure what you're referring to here. Could you elaborate, please?

It's all down to perception. From my end, I've heard numerous people say "Oh, you've got a HTC/Samsung What's it like?" - no realisation of a possibility that it could be running an OS different to Android.

Of course, sales will depend on Samsung advertisement, and considering that their WP8 unveliend was in like 3 minutes inside an android conference I don't have much faith.

The only thing that could hold the Lumia 920 back is a price tag that is too high. They need to offer this device at the right price...

By reputation, I mean exactly what you just said bellow. People don't just want the GS3 because is running Android ICS they know they GS3 is good by word of mouth and solid advertisement

If advertised correctly the ATIV can be the best seller WP8 device. If.

For me, Samsung is a huge faceless conglomerate. I have a Samsung TV, looks like any other TV. I used to have a Samsung S5230 phone, looked like just about every other phone out there. I love that Samsung are on the WP8 boat but man, when people -normal regular people that don't hang on phone forums all day long- walk in that store and see the Ativ they'l say "oh! look there's that Samsung Android phone Apple is suing, now where are those new WP8 handsets?"

Samsung makes some great phones with great specs but you don't win the masses with specs, you need to differentiate yourself to be seen among all the black, grey and white masses that are the current smartphones.

Your comment would make sense if Samsung wasn't destroying the competition on smartphones and TVs.

People buy Samsung devices and they buy them in droves.

Sure it makes sense. People think of Samsungs in terms of the S3 and Note - Android in other words. Potential buyers will need to be guided to the WP table and shown the offerings. I see it now, "Samsung? I thought it was an Android phone. Is this as cool as the S3?"

BTW - Panasonic still owns the plasma market - not Samsung (LCD is probably different)

Even the low end market is in Sammy's hands(or pocket). Not everyone can afford a S3 or a Note. You should see the number of people using cheap and hopelessly bad, low-end handsets in India. "In Droves" as WF put it.

But again, the only argument against this is quality vs quantity. And sadly revenues increase only because of the latter.

India is saturated with Nokia mainly! Symbian is still alive because of that.

Yes, downright cheap android phones i.e. Samsung and other locals are broken quite well into the market too. Android is catching up on Symbian you can say.

Samsung wins in terms of specs (size, weight, expandable storage in a flagship device). Nokia wins in terms of innovative features. How can HTC win in terms of styling when the 8X's design is so derivative of Nokia's designs?

I agree with this exactly. Samsung I'd say put out the overall best and safest design, in terms of usability and practicality. But Nokia is cranking out devices that draw attention, and putting in gimmick features that users can show off to others.

I love the 920, it looks like such a fantastic device, as all Nokia's do. However, I really think they dropped the ball in the size/weight department. The 920 is a brick compared to the competition, and its size is one of the things driving me away from getting it.

What about girls? They have weak limbs and tight pants.

Samsung goes way beyond phones. I know people who bought Samsung phones simply because they owned Samsung TVs, DVD players, and PCs and wanted to "stay in the family."
