Latest update and battery life

I am owning Lumia 520, Yesterday night i updated my phone with latest 8.1 udpate. After updating i could see my mobile is faster, especially in Resuming tasks...

Also Battery life seems to be improved.

Yap! Battery issue has been addressed by this latest update. I was able to get 12 hours on my L620 but not that heavy use.

yes I must say that my battery has been improved after wp 8.1 small update
that's really awesome
usually my phone kinda warm even when standby but today my phone really cool

I find that multitasking more smooth and notification more smooth too but still not perfect

I still find a little lag when do scrolling in any apps and on startscreen menu backround

L720 here

Battery on my 1020 is definitely improved after the update, especially when on mobile network instead of Wi-FI. My phone constantly swtiches between 2G, 3G and 4G at my work desk because of a spotty signal. Before the update while just sitting there in standby, it would have dropped to 70% by noon.

Now I have still well over 80% left after the same time, so they seem to have fixed something in the mobile stack.

Also worth noting might be that on Wi-Fi at home, battery was always fine even before the May 14 udpate.

The newest update was more of a setback - I lost the ability to search for contacts in apps like people and messaging (when you compose a new message). My query always returns a "no results found" message. Ativ S on Bell.

As far as the charge cycle, should I run the battery really low or even dead before the next charge?

Lithium batteries need one cycle when first installed in the hardware to calibrate the battery sensor. After that point there is no 'calibration' required. None. Ever. Phones use a hardware based IC (a Coulomb Counter) which samples the battery periodically and derives the capacity. The OS then periodically asks the IC for that information.

As to whether to fully cycle the battery... lithium batteries will last longer with fewer full discharges. So unless your daily use forces a complete discharge, you are better to not do it if you want you battery to last the longest time. Battery manufacturers appear to recommend to do a full cycle every few months if you never fully discharge the battery, but if you have a phone and don't find that occurs as part of everyday life you are probably unique.

Summary: Updating the OS does not need any special battery attention.

Not impressed too much on my ICON. I played a game the other night (Real Racing 2), When i started my battery was at 33%, played about 3 races, maybe about 10 min total and the "Low battery" warning came up, the phone was VERY hot to the touch. After I got this message, I finished the race I was doing (maybe about 1 min later), exited the game, and about 3-5 min later with out doing anything, the phone powered off, tried to turn it back on, I got the Battery screen.

This is a LOT worse than it was before the update, yea, games would eat up battery but, not that bad.If I dont play a game at all, the phone will last most of the day if not being around 20% at the end of the day(facebook, twitter, email, about 30 texts and about an hour on the phone making calls).

I did hard reset after 8.1 was installed but, not willing to hard reset again at this point. Maybe when Verizon releases the final, maybe...

With this being said, this would be more of a firmware based issue in my eyes, once the final is released, I would bet battery on the ICON would get much better. If games like that kill a full battery in a 1/2 hour (based on what I saw, 33% down in 10 min, a 99% charge would be done in 30 min), it will be a major problemI hope this does get adressed

While some NL 920s may be OK, I and others still have major battery life problems - Making the NL 920 8.1 WITH UPDATE into a BRICK.

Please submit your detailed feedback to Nokia. Here is feedback which I submitted to Nokia:

"FEEDBACK TO NOKIA RE Windows Phone 8.1 Developer?s Preview UPDATE on LUMIA 920 - - -

Battery life with 8.1 was so poor almost unusable. Discharge was 15-20%/hour.

After ~2 days with update, discharge seems ~10-15% / hour.

These are with ALL background disabled, ONLY location, NO WIFI, cellular data, E-mail hourly, dim screen, etc. Overall light usage, no maps usage, no search usage.

MUCH WORSE using any map app while driving.

Overall performance with 8.1 update is POOR to "F" as a "Flip phone'; and like a "BRICK" if the standard is as a smart phone.

Please keep working on it.

Hello guys, I am new here and I would really appreciate your help. I'd like to know your opinion about my battery in Nokia Lumia 720 (WP 8.1).

So I've charged my phone to 100% and then I installed 8.1. After that I did a hard reset and then installed the latest update, turned off location, most of the apps (only 4 are running that are connected with news), changed e-mails sync (2hours for gmail, 1hour for outlook), turned off notifications about new emails and apps updates, wifi is always on, 3g, bluetooth off... that's all i guess...

yesterday it drained about 0.7%/1h in IDLE mode. Today I think it is a little bit better - 0.5%/1h (because from 2pm to 6pm it drained only 2%).

Then I decided to use my phone a little bit. So during a one hour period I was listening to music, reading news, checking twitter and news feed in Contacts, using IE and watching videos in HQ for about 10 minutes. So after one hour my battery dropped from 45% to 30%.

After that I made a call, which lasted 15 minutues. Because of it I've lost another 3%.

So what do you think about it? Is it good enough? I can't remember how things were on WP8. I think results were close to this one but I also think, that they were slightly better but I might be wrong. That's why I want to know your opinion based on your experience.

BTW. Charging now lasts 2 hours. On WP8 it lasted about 15 or 20 minutes longer.

My 1520 improved. I don't need to un pin cortana live tile anymore. Phone heating up issues are gone, although too early to tell. Phone appears to be smoother. I have not disabled any background tasks. Location services on. Wi-Fi on. Have whatsapp. Used 5 mins of Whatsapp. Used Skype for 30 mins video. Browsed for 30 mins. Used various other apps for 15 mins. Have 50% left after 20 hrs in my 1520.

What confuses me are the inconsistencies with the results people are getting. On my 1520, for instance, the freezes and lags have disappeared, but the battery life still sucks. Other people with 1520s are reporting a big improvement with the battery, and some are in the same boat as me. I have all background tasks disabled, location services off and sync my email manually.

I feel your pain. I have an Icon and it's the same thing. Some people don't have the button lag or the battery issues, others do. Some say unpinning Cortana fixed the battery, others say turning off Battery Saver did the trick. I need to be able to count on my phone and I don't want to nerf it to use it so that's why I reverted to 8 and will probably just wait for the 8.1 OTA.

Just posted a very cool update for Battery.Net.
New features :
Lock screen notifications
Battery Trace : Trace your battery performance while playing game, watching vdo or simply sleeping. See how much charge your battery lost/gained during the trace session. Compare different trace session graphically. I was able to compare the battery charging performance when using my Car Charger and wireless charger.
Compare Days : This feature will help you evaluate performance before and after such updates.

I'm very satisfyed with my 925. 1 day and 12 hours and still 35% remaining... medium usage. no games but about an hour per day of wi-fi reading news some photos, downloaded a mix from mix radio and 5/6 aplications running in the background, some messages and some calls made. think it's not bad at all. even before this update was like this but i think it is better now...

Same for me too! I have been using Rooms, Facebook Messenger and Xbox Music since morning and Outlook emails pulled "as items arrive" - been 7 hours now since I took if off charge. Got 73% juice remaining.
I have 19 apps running in background, auto back up for everything is on, all settings are syncing, screen set to low-auto brightness, glance off, double tap to wake off and touch sensitivity set to normal. Running on 3G, no WiFi.

I am impressed.

I never had luck with Rooms. How have you gotten it to work?
