I contacted AT&T and they said Cricket phones need to be unlocked to use on AT&T. I don't know Cricket's policy regarding how long, if at all, one must be a customer before they'll unlock a device.

Yeah I know it's weird that unlock is required, since Cricket is an AT&T MVNO.

Thanks for looking into it. Ridiculous policy. I can tell you they won't unlock unless you've continuously used the same device for 6 months - I've tried and thats what I was told. Guess folks will just have to wait for the 'unlocking' services out there to do it for them.

Me and the wife were planning to switch to ATT's gophone plans, but this may put a crinkle in that. ATT must be doing something to Crickets network since the last 2 weeks both our phones have been getting spotty reception in our area. Never mind trying to send a picture mms.

Well, it's official. Cricket on 5/15 for $129. I thought $89 was too low considering the 635 is only $79 and we weren't getting all those improvements for $10. Since B&H will have them by 5/29 I'm guessing everyone else will too.

I'm assuming the B&H model is the US variant, but it's difficult to tell without having a list of the variants for each country.

What I want to know is, what are the advantages to buying the phone unlocked instead of directly through Tmo? Will I get OS updates faster? Will Wi-Fi calling still work?

Nope, no Wi-Fi calling for a non-T-Mobile Lumia 640 or any phone in general. I tried using it on my unlocked Rogers 920 and tried to get it working on my unlocked AT&T HTC One M7 but it never worked. Argh... This phone just needs to be released like yesterday!

Bad News. Tmobile just tweeted 7/16 as the release date. I can't post the link because I'm new.

Bummer...
I've pretty much given up on T-Mo.

B&H is showing pre-orders for the 640LTE dual SIM at $199.00.
I'll go this way unless I can find a great deal on a better older high end (dare I say) Android device

Wow they might as well hold on to it even longer and just release it as the Lumia 640 Windows 10 edition.

And they followed it up with another link saying they don't have a specific date. The original link you shared was at 11:45 a.m. and the follow up (link below) at 12:59 p.m. Wish they could give a straight answer. If I had to guess, I'd bet that it is 7/16 but someone wasn't supposed to share that. Annoying.

I tweeted back to John Legere that it's basically embarrassing that they're getting bested by Cricket Wireless like this. It's not like there's an exclusivity deal in place.

There's nothing in the wording that indicates it was a followup tweet. The different signatures indicate it was simply two different Tmoble peons replying.

In addition, if it were a mistake, they would have deleted the tweet which so far they haven't. So my money is on 7/16, which is lame since that means it's been "coming soon" for 4 months.

I really hope that it isn't July, and thank you for tweeting at them.

I didn't mean follow up as in explicitly following up the first...it just followed the original.

I find it curious that the second tweet said spring release and yet the first tweet said 7/16. Either someone doesn't know what spring means or someone had the wrong phone and the wrong date, although I doubt it. As I said before, my bet is 7/16, too. Way too specific of a date.

There is absolutely no way the rep who said July knows what they're talking about. They would never be given a specific date that far out. In any case, my family is switching from Verizon when my sister is in town next month so it better be out or we're going to have a serious problem.

They're getting bested by carriers in countries that barely have indoor plumbing. Ridiculous.

I just gave up and bought a like-new Lumia 1520 on ebay for $199. Yeah, I won't have Wi-Fi calling, but for $70 more, I'm getting a vastly better phone.
