Apple computers are simply too expensive to ever have a leap in market share. Plus, Microsoft has the business customers locked into Windows as well. I know you say nothing is certain, but I'd say the Windows desktop OS platform will certainly be #1 for many years to come.

Not true - Mac growth in the PC market is, and has been, incredible for years. Business and personal. If you remove mac figures from PC market figures, the industry looks in terrible shape.

That said, MS need not worry yet - but to be honest I don't think the Mac is the real threat to MSs captive market. I think the real threat is the world realising it simply doesn't need Windows anymore. Smartphones, tablets, cloud services with dumb terminals, consoles - there's just less and less need to have a Microsoft PC running windows (or any desktop of any OS) when smaller, cheaper devices do so much of the same job that people need. Huge parts of the developing world don't use PCs at all - to them, the smartphone is the PC. MS has never had a look-in, and unless WP can et a foothold they might not ever get one - one reason Tango is so important.

Microsoft's challenge is to simply stay relevant. That's why WP should be really, really important to them and why Windows 8 is such a risk. They're trying to mash together the past and the future to sustain Windows in the new era of truly personal computing. If they don't pull it off they could alienate their traditinal customers and the customers who are looking at the post-PC world. Windows 8 is a seriously big gamble.

True Pronk. The PC market is slowly degrading.

That's why MS is banking so much on Windows 8 and the Metro interface. Because if they just continue down the "safe" path of the traditional desktop, they'll slowly but surely go down the path to irrelevancy. At least to the consumer market.

Windows 8 on ARM will likely see a huge investment by MS, even if it loses money for a while. And if MS pretty much has to bride devs to make apps for it, they will.

If Nokia is making a tablet, I wouldn't expect to hear anything about it until about 2 or 3 months before it actually hits market.

Apple computer sales grow faster than PC sales for five years - but why? | Technology | guardian.co.uk

i would challenge the fact that "the world is realising they dont need desktop pc's"... most of us will always have a desktop, they are our workstations... i mean really who would want to do a report, or manage entire media libraries, or compose groups of work files on a tablet? definately not me... dont get me wrong, the tablets and smartphones replace some of the simple work we did on pc's but they will never replace them entirely. and to be honest tablets cost as much if not more than desktop pc's.

Tablets are fun, but they can't replace PCs

The desktop isn't going away any time soon. But the market is shrinking significantly. Laptops have already eaten into it quite a bit.

In the near future we'll be seeing more combo devices. A lot of people who have fully functional tablets/slates that can just be put into a docking station and be your desktop replacement.

Sure, people who do things like gaming or anything needing specialized power will still need desktops. But a lot of people won't soon.

Desktops or laptops are here to stay one way or the other. There's stuff you can do with them that you can't efficiently/comfortably do with a tablet.

what i would like to have!!!

is a tablet that can be added to a DOCKING station witch adds better hardware.

like having a PC with only RAM , Graphic card , Memory and a sound card then when you connect you tablet to it your tablet specs switch to that PC/doc station specs

that be cool!!! dont think its even possible to do that but that would be cool!!

That sounds plausible, although it would require that the docking station have a hard drive with the exact same OS installed. The tablet would function has a standard monitor and any changes you make on the docking station could be automatically transferred to your tablet. However, I don't think we're at the point where something like that is commercially viable.
