Running into 80188308 installing GDR1 or Pre Update

Lol well atleast we now know how to get 8.1.1 :) But I won't be downgrading my phone just for that.. MS has work to do! I shouldn't have to go out of my way to get their update to work, it should be the other way around.. Come to think of it maybe they won't do anything at all and let us wait for the official release since it has been said that this problem only affects "a small % of users"

Yeah, I call bs on "a small % of users". That tweet came out very shortly after the Update was released and long before the barrage of complaints started flying in. There's no way they could have known how widespread it was, or wasn't. Besides he was addressing 8018830f with that. Not 80188308, which appears to have more people complaining.

Well the 920 doesn't have an SD Card. If it did I wouldn't be as concerned. Moreso, I'm hesitant to do this because I shouldn't have to. If MS isn't going to release an update that installs on my device without hassle, then I'm not going to install it. Why is the onus on me to run constant backups and worry about bricking my phone through a firmware update (and there's no warranty when you're on DP) because they clearly didn't run a thorough Q/A on a simple update. So forget it.

I'm definitely leaning away from MS for my next phone upgrade. Never had any of these issues with my old Nexus.

I understand why we get the update first (as part of dp) and I think you do as well so I won't go into that.. But what I find funny is that we haven't received ANY encouraging news yet.. Not counting that last tweet stating "memory problem; looking into it" I mean if you want to keep your costumers happy then you need to reassure them that you're working on it and getting closer (Even if they're not getting any closer I would appreciate the honesty). IMO when you're trying to gain marketshare you should make sure that the consumers you have right now are happy and encouraged to stay.. But maybe I have a different take on business & economics

To be honest I thought there was only one error code :/ Just read in a different thread and your comment that there are in fact two separate error codes... oy vey...

8018830f comes with a message about being unable to open the update. Which is why they thought it was a space issue.
80188308 is completely different. It just says Temporary Problem, maybe it will work later. Uh, thanks. That's really useful. At answers.microsoft they're taking device info for users with this problem and they're coming from all over the place. But I did notice a lot of Rogers, Canada popup, which is me. Something the carriers did, perhaps.

I'm not wiping, backing up, rebooting or resetting anything until Microsoft tells me that is what needs to be done. While it would be nice to get the update correctly installed on my 822 sooner than later, I'm in no rush to have to deal with all the reset procedures.

Good. So I'm not the only 822 user with the problem.

Thanks for this info!

Hi,
I can confirm that resetting your phone doesn't always work...

I've an unlocked Rogers 920 on Bell network in Canada....getting this exact same error over and over so I reset the phone and the error came back again...

I followed the previous instructions of resetting->updating->resetting->bringing back saved data

Everyone, please also report this issue to MSFT

Typical. First I get locked out of the Cyan update over BitLocker problems that couldn't be more removed from me, and now GDR1 can't even be delivered to my phone. That Microsoft support topic is a joke too. Just looking at this forum there isn't any consistency. Locked phones, unlocked phones. Live lock screens on or off. Two of the same phones in a household, where one accepts the update and yet the other doesn't. Home wireless, office wireless. Lumia Cyan, Black, Developer Preview. The truth is it doesn't matter what we tell Microsoft about our specs to pinpoint what went wrong. The problem isn't situational. It either downloads for you or it doesn't. The update isn't stable and the recovery tool suggestion isn't really a proper solution.

Same problem here. 920 and 520. Both from Singapore. 920 is Singtel, 520 is country variant.

My mother's 720, Australia country variant didn't have any problems tho.

I have two 820s. One is able to update while the other is unable to do so. It keeps having this 80188308 error.

hi there. I have two Lumia 820s and updated one without any issues. but the second one had the same error msg. I tried 6 times. then tried reset and still no joy. so I used NSU down graded to WP8.0 then proceeded to download all the DP updates again. success.

I have a Samsung Ativ S, and had the 80188308 error even after i reset my phone. Now i made it, i have updated my phone (i had to downgrade to wp8.0 and then update 5-6 time until i get all updates). My ROM is GT-I8750_XXCMK2_R_signed, and my CSC is COA (i had the same even before downgrade so i dont know what the problem was)
Sorry for my english...

OK I decided to bite the bullet & did a factory reset on the wifes Lumia 820. Didn't restore the backup & went straight into the Preview for developers app, then checked for updates & the 8.1 Update 1 installed properly - didn't even have to roll back to WP8.0.

Thinking back the only thing that I can say was different since going onto Dev Preview between my wifes 820 & my 920 (phone diff aside) was this was the first time I had done a factory reset on hers since installing dev preview whereas my 920 was factory reset a few weeks ago - not sure if this has anything to do with the updating issue?

Sorry if anyone has written it earlier, but I realy can't be bothered to read it...

I could not get my update on one of my 3 ativs (I tried it 5 times or so). But I think I have a solution: I've hard reseted my phone and loged in with a new microsoft account. I have created this one with all american data incl. time zone etc. I unchecked the "send location data to microsoft" box too. I've downloaded the update and it worked fine. Then I've just reseted the phone and logged in with my account again. It works.

If you want to try it, there is my help account:

i have the same issue and tried many time but failed, but today i rolled my phone back to official wp8.0 and installed the DP then checked the update, after 4 times update,my phone managed to update to wp8.1 gdr1,my phone is Lumia 920 China Unicom version. It's a way with risk, so if you wanna try i have no idea what will be going on with your phone, so do it with caution

okay okay.. we all know now that a hardreset is a workaround for our problem.. we still need a solution

Hi, FYI folks the method below the Dragone posted worked fine for me on my UK 920, took a couple of hours, but most of the time is restoring the apps...
