So, who's gonna get a Surface Pro 3?

Well, even though I've had terrible experiences with the Surface RT hardware so far (Surface dead after 6 months, type covers going nuts etc) I'm considering giving Microsoft yet another chance and get a SP3.

However, I will only get it if I can get a friend bringing me one from the USA. You want to know why? Price.
Here's why:
(I'll add the European prices also in dollars so you can get an idea of how insane they are. The USA prices have been converted to Euros)

i3 / 64GB + type cover 3

Portugal - 819? + 135? = 954? (US$1291)
USA - 590? + 96? = 686?

i5 / 128GB + type cover 3

Portugal - 1019? + 135 = 1.154? (US$1562)
USA 739? + 96? = 835?

So yeah. I think I have a couple of friends going to the US in July, I'll ask one of them to bring me an i5/128GB with a Dark Blue type cover from the US (though if he doesn't get the Dark Blue one from Best Buy, I'll buy it here in Europe. I want that colour.)
I would be good with the i3 since the SP3 will not be replacing my PC, just my Surface RT, but the i3 apparently will only be available in September and I'm not sure I have anyone going to the US then.

If I could get some reasonably trading value for my surface rt I would consider it, (really I'm going to look at it later today and decide I think)

I think that you could reasonably expect about $100 for a 32GB RT. Although Best Buy is offering $130 trade-in value, a private sale may be difficult to get that much or more... especially since manufacturing refurbed models regularly sell on eBay for $170.

I didn't know Best Buy did trade-ins. So I looked it up. Wow. $387 for a SP2. I can definitely beat that on eBay. I hope you're right on the RT - I didn't look that one up.

Speaking of Best Buy, it looks like they're planning on selling the SP3 on the 20th as well. Since they're much closer and now have display models, I decided to pre-order through BB. We'll see how that goes!

They have display models now? I'll have to see if I have time to go look. They didn't have any when I went to a BB on Thursday last week. I want to see the blue.

Well, at least around here (Austin,TX) they just got them setup over the weekend. I suspect others did as well. They didn't even have all of the tags updated and were still using the SP2 keyboard, but the tablet was there and ready to go.

I seemed as though I was actually the first one to pre-order in-store as they had to do some digging to figure out where everything was hidden to even allow me to get it setup. But I got an e-mail and print-out confirmation for the i5/256/8 and black keyboard. Hope to get a call on Friday morning to go pick it up!

Also note: BB does require a $50 gift card purchase for each pre-order, which you can of course use towards purchase when it arrives. So yeah, not a big deal.

I have found that periodically Best Buy offers some good(*) trade-in values on particular devices at particular times. I regularly check their trade-in values and trade when the values peak.

I've stopped selling electronics on eBay ever since eBay went to "seller cannot provide negative feedback on a buyer". That caused a rise in scam artist buyers. I'll BUY on eBay but I don't sell anymore.

* "good" = going private sale price - value of simple, hassle free transaction

Didn't know they made that change. I use ebay seldom enough that I probably do a transaction once for every three changes in TOS, so I don't keep up.

You may want to also try selling it on Amazon. I sold mine on Amazon with a type cover 2 for $1100 a couple of weeks ago.

Hmmm....... Gonna have to rethink this. Went to a Worst Buy tonight, and they said that they could not accept my course schedule as proof of student status. My school doesn't issue email addresses to students. :straight: He also said that the discount offer isn't for the SP3, but just a couple Apple products. :straight:

Thinking through this now... I hate Worst Buy. But my wife has a Worst Buy credit card. That's one of two reasons I was planning to buy there. The other is the blue keyboard. So if I don't buy from Worst Buy, I'll have to wait until I sell my two computers in order to buy from the MS Store. But Worst Buy does price matching, and MS has the student discount on PCs. So if I show them the student discount price on the SP3, Show them my course schedule (school starts Thursday), and talk to a manager and tell him that there are only two reasons that I'm there - that they're an hour closer than the Microsoft Store, and they have a blue keyboard, I wonder if he'll accept my course schedule as evidence (I could even log in to my classes for him). I wonder if they make enough of a margin that losing the sale will be more important to him than sticking to some dumb .edu rule?

I'm beginning to think there really is a store called 'Worst Buy'.

I've been calling it that since 2006. I had a laptop with the Geek Squad warranty on it. I sent it in four times for repair. Each time it came back worse than before, including once it came back with no video. I should have only had to send it in three times before they replaced it, but they decided that the third repair was not really a repair, so the lemon clause had not been invoked. Fourth time I sent it back, I got my money back for the PC (in store credit), bought a laptop with it, sold it on ebay unopened, and bought a Dell. That Dell is now 8 years old, and I gave it to a girl at church to use for school. When she bought a new SP2, she gave it back and I gave it to a guy who's studying computer tech at a tech school, but only had a WinXP machine. You can't learn to be a good tech with a 13 year old OS, and even though my old laptop is 8 years old, it still installs Win8, so I gave it to him to help with his studies.

No retail store is perfect, and Best Buy certainly deserves a lot of the criticism leveled at it. I'm selective about what, where, when, and why I go there. Just last night I went to Best Buy to use some of their stackable deals and picked up a 11.6" Macbook Air to replace my Surface 2... $450 out of pocket.

This is absolutely true. It's just that the bad experience I had, which lasted more than a year in getting my laptop straightened out, left a bad enough taste in my mouth that I don't go there unless there is a VERY compelling reason to.
