If they're well known areas for flooding why are they building houses there?

Brisbane Australia ran into this issue back in 2011. Lots of houses built our modified in flood prone areas and they even up flooding. Go figure.

I have trouble having sympathy for that sometimes. Like, I feel sorry for the people but at the same time I'm like, well what did your expect? Worse still most them had no issuance cuvette for flooding because they were known as flood prone areas.

Humans... Sigh.

The last part pretty much sums it up. I know many people whose houses get flooded on a near yearly basis, but they just keep renovating. There are some that are less than 10m from the river, not only are they being flooded but their foundations are at risk too.

There was this one guy in my town whose house was so close to river, that even his 2nd floor was filled with water up to the height of knees. He refused to leave the house with his wife (they picked her up by a boat) and stayed with his son inside. He ended up on a national TV, seen as trying to empty the water with buckets and throwing them out of the window.

He was so proud of himself later. Yeah, humans.

All they can do is record, send it into the news. See what happens.

Harlem is slowly being gentrified.

Apparently some areas are a bit rough still but overall nothing like it used to be.

Oh, didn't know it was getting better. Movies...

I'm happy for them in that case.

It's not getting better... The people are more or less being costed out the area.

Gentrified means prices become unaffordable for 'regular' people and those people become less desirable in the area.

Gentrified is typically young white people taking over 'cool and hip' up and coming areas making them less so...

Then developers move in, etc... Repeat...

So better, depending on your point of view.

Like all things there's pluses and minuses.

This is every major city around the world pretty much.

As for movies. Yeah they do a lot for a reputation of an area. I never wanted to go to NYC because of the reputation it had when I was growing up but I've been three times now.

Side note. I learned a lot about reputation when I moved out of Toronto and heard how people talked about it. I literally grew up in the city and these people talked like it was some gang ridden place with people just waiting to mug you.

All cities have issues...

I've learned if one goes looking for trouble they often find it.

Went for a walk last night and saw a coyote trotting away merrily on the opposite side of the road. First time seeing one while walking. Usually we spot them from the car.

Oh, I thought the word means to restore/improve, so you can from where I got the impression it was getting better.

Thanks for clarifying.

I get it, but as I've previously said, hadn't seen any of those with my own eyes, so pretty much all I've got is what media feeds me.

I reside near a 'dangerous' place in Sarajevo myself. The dorm is literally across the street. While there is crime and not so pretty things happening, it's not really as bad as people or the media portray it to be.

So a part of Germany has gone back into lockdown.

Their R number went to about 3. Which basically means for every 100 infected people 300 more become infected.

I won't be surprised if France's goes up. Not sure they'll lockdown though unless hospitals can't cope.

Welcome to the new normal....

So first day at work in 3 months...

Not sure I like it that much.

I might start coming in one day a week but it's a bit uncomfortable...

I feel on edge all the time. Distracted.

I was better at home.

Since thee resumption of Football season, I've gone back to using my laptop. Brush up on my excel file I use to keep track of the results and league standings. Have to retweak the formula due to the postponements, suspension and now condensed fixtures to wrap up by end of July.
One thing is certain, Liverpool will be Champions.

I've been started dipping into UK fans forums, especially the threads on Covid on football. These thread usually started in February. It's fascinating to see the pandemic unfold thru the eyes of football fans.. from rumours from Wuhan, to its just a flu, to Null And Void the season, asterisk champions, to callousness of thinking its OK cos it affected the elderly more, to "Italy & Iran if fecked",
Mind, I'm about a quarter done & some of these threads goes to almost a thousand pages... its strange to read it from my Asian perspective.

So update on the neighbour thing regarding the local elections.

As I mentioned there's two rounds and the second is this weekend.

We found out the two neighbours are working together. So that's why they have the same percentage.

What we're not sure of is what political parties they represent.

Yes we've asked. Going by the answer from our friend it would appear that the two probably represent Le Penn's party. The other single neighbour who's in the lead is likely Macron's party.

It's not surprising that in our area Le Penn would be acceptable. She says all the right things that appeal to these people. Tradition, French life, etc.

So my wife had decided to abstain. Main reason is that they'll know who she voted for.

There was a lot of abstinence votes first round due to covid so it's hard to predict what will happen.

So this predicament has stressed my wife. It's made things feel uncomfortable.

Truth is we didn't plan to stay in that area forever but we were going to get a few years but I think we've decided that now the plan is to fix the house. Make things a bit pretty. Then sell.

Fixing the house will be worth the investment as it increase the value so we'll hopefully come out ahead.

Going by prices of other houses it's likely we'll do ok. But like all things you don't know until you do it.

So it's now the stress of getting that place sorted. Selling, then getting a new place.

It will probably take minimum a year to finish and how long it takes to sell will depend. Houses in rural areas don't move fast but this is in a decent location so... ?

TQ Laura..
After 100 days of MCO.. the karaoke joints is now open... just in time...!!
and momma cat is looking for a new spot to nest
Just goes to show how sensible leadership can make the best out of a bad situation. Your karaoke bars are re-opening and our sh*t-for-brains governor has ordered all bars to close again. Nearly 9000 new cases in Flori-Duh yesterday. Un-f**king-believable.

Don't they have private voting in France? I knew the guy who was my city council representative a few years ago, but I'm fairly certain that he wouldn't have known how I voted since I didn't discuss it with him.

What's the purpose of an election if one cannot keep his vote private? That sounds like it would be a system easily controlled by corrupt and criminal enterprises that could coerce voters by bribery or physical violence.
