WC 1M Post Challenge - You Ready?!

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

So small whinge.

As you know my wife and I like to cook. My wife is a very good cook and I do my best to help.

In the last week we went out to a local restaurant with French neighbors for the first time. When I say local restaurant I mean regional.

What a lot of people may not not know about French food is that it's very regional. Like Italian and pretty much every European country.

Anyway, we had a cabbage soup as part of the lunch. May not sound like much but it was nice and my wife who was brought up on Finnish cuisine likes cabbage a lot.

Anyway, we decided to make a French cabbage soup. Did a search and found a recipe, from the USA... (Forgot to search in French). It's 'Soupe de chou" if you're interested.

Two things annoyed me about this recipe.

1. They put 'Swiss cheese' in the soup. Problem one... It's a French soup... Two there's no such thing as Swiss cheese. What people call Swiss cheese is a type of Emmental cheese, which can be found throughout Europe.

2. They finished by saying to have it with Italian bread, (not sure which Italian bread)....why not have it with a French baguette????!

It's an irritating thing in North America to generalise European food. Maybe it's my time here but i find it confusing that in 2018, with the internet and a foody movement that we're still generalising. Sad really.

Anyway, end of whinge... I know, my life is fairly simple these days...

I believe it. Your comment reminds me of this video.

Basically, we have 2 Americans and a French person to see if all these so called "French foods" in America are real. There's English subtitles but they speak in French.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

I've been in a semi-fog lately with regards to news and such so it came as a surprise to learn about Google's handling of Andy Rubin's departure. Let's just say I'm glad I don't own the PH-1 any longer. Maybe it's time to give the iPhone another look. At least I know the CEO won't be sexually harassing any women - unless he attends one of Mike Pence's "therapies".

I was really disappointed to hear that, as I do have an Essential Phone. I do like it too but I'm forced to look at it differently now.

Absolutely. As much as I enjoy Microsoft's products I'll drop them in half a heartbeat if something like this would come up. Everyone here knows how big I am on women's rights and I'm surprised I didn't come out female or a total flame.

You're just a very understanding and considerate guy, which is awesome. It makes me not want my Essential at all but I'll have to figure out a way to deal with that.

Actually, I might be able to just pass it on to said kid (aunt's son) and return the phone that I didn't open (I basically paid the same price for both phones anyway). The wheels are turning in my head now...

That's interesting because I bought cheese on sale at the supermarket this week. It was called "Emmi" cheese.

I had heard about this a long time ago. Not surprised.

Everyone has a right to decide what works for them. All I will say that there's a lot of sleeze across industries. People are free to boycott what they want; if I started to boycott stuff in the same way, I'd go live on an island in the Pacific and curse humanity from causing climate change while watching the sea levels rise because most of the stuff I may use have some ills attached to them.

You're so correct about that, it's hard to do with most things. I find it easier with things that I know that I can avoid.
Pizza from a certain place? I just don't. Friends of mine still choose to buy pizza from there and I don't judge them at all for it because as you said, everyone does their right to do what works for them. If they buy it and I'm already there, I wouldn't not eat it.

That was funny and very true! French salad dressing is not orange... That baguette is closer to what they call 'bread' here. There is no French dip. That other French bread doesn't exist as far as I know. Fries are not crinkle cut in restaurants but you can find them at the grocery stores these days.

Several countries have a 'French toast' recipe, typically made with stale bread. In France it's made with baguettes or 'bread'.

A typical coffee in France is an espresso with no milk.

Re: WC 150K Post Challenge - You Ready?!

You mean French Fries aren't from France? Please don't flog the ignorant Cuban!!
Belgium is the capital of fries...

Though French people do eat a lot of them.

In our area they cook them in duck fat. Yes they are good... Sigh....

Interesting.... You can find Emmental cheese all over Europe. It's very popular. There's different grades and styles like any other cheese.

Again, it's whatever you feel comfortable doing. Even in my line of work, not all social injustices are viewed as equal.

I know what works for me. I boycott a wide range of things with social ills.

I get what you're saying and I don't want Google to go belly up, but that kind of leadership needs to be shown the door. I hate Florida Power & Light but they're the only game in town if I want the lights on. Google doesn't have that luxury.
