why did you choose Windows over the competition ?(ios, Android,BBos etc)

I got a Windows Phone because of all the new innovation that the platform has made recently. The momentum that this platform is receiving will be very difficult to stop. Android and Apple are stale and has failed to innovate lately.

Did I write this ? Oh yes, I couldn't agree more, Apple just added colour to their UI and Android changes wallpapers and makes backgrounds of home/lock screen texts transparent. They really have run out of ideas except for the HTC one. HTC sense almost looks completely different every time. But for the rest of users, referring to the everyday Amish user that is 6% computer literate, would never know any difference, they simply buy the phone to make calls and send messages.

Because I was fed up with Android, having gone back to it from WP7 (Most of you probably know that I was using WP from it's first release), and BB10 only had 2 apps that I was using on Android listed on BlackBerry AppWorld. I would have gone with the Z10 otherwise.

As this thread states Windows and not Windows Phone specifically I've always used Windows from Windows 2.0, although I do use Linux on my Raspberry Pi and my aging Centrino laptop, and as such have a lot of applications for the platform so switching would be a very expensive thing to do. That and I like Windows 8.1 and RT 8.1 being able to share apps with up to 81 devices running either OS, and the ability to share settings with said devices as well.

Are you aware that the black berry Z10 can side load Android apps ? And if I'm not mistaken, perhaps even from Google play.

I choose Windows Phone over:

Android: Who wants a phone which will lag soon? Anyone? Okay customization is there, but do I really need the time to just go through the lagging settings?

iOS: A billion apps, yes, smooth interface, yes, but why do I always want to see rows upon rows of icons?

BB: okay, but its all the same.

Every other OS: WP is refreshing, check, buttery smooth every time, check, customization to my needs, check, gets heads turned everywhere, check ;)
and it will soon support features others will only dream of because of the desktop integration.

iOS is too expensive. Android (if you want anything "decent") is too expensive.

I buy entry or mid-level phones only, and WP currently is perfect for that.
But because of the socalled "innovation" ?? Hell no. There is no innovation imo, cause the other two are doing way better in that area.

I chose WP8 (HTC 8XT) for a few reasons.

I was burned by Android/Motofail's lies regarding their promise to update my Photon 4G to ICS.

I wanted an OS that 'just worked' and wasn't Apple. BB was circling the drain already, and I was ready to try something different...plus WebOS & my Pre were long gone.

I migrated off an HTC One and it was a great phone, but I was bored and very very tired of 'managing' my Android phones...I just wanted a phone that worked all the time. I was also feeling a little 'Big Brother'd, or 1984'd' by Google...something that is more evident with them all the time.

I wasn't until a few days ago when I was reading the crackberry forums but they don't make a big deal of it in the advertising in stores. Also those apps can't be downloaded directly from the Play Store and, AFAIK, they have to be converted to BAR format first.

I was upgrading my Palm Treo in 2010 and after test-driving the options, I went back in to the ATT store to get an iPhone. Before I pulled the trigger, I asked the rep what he would get and he said "actually, I like the new Windows Phone so I would get that one." Since I had two Windows computers and I liked what at the time was a "large" screen, I got a Samsung Focus instead. I now have an L920 and don't have any desire to move to any other platform at this time.

I choose wp8 cuz fastest os over 3G than my galaxy s3..Android load more than 20 second before it play video online. Unlike wp8 just one tap play just milliseconds in any online streaming...

Was the Windows phone running 4G ? And does it use the same carrier that your samsung S3 was using ? What about browsing, is wp much faster there too ?

I'm tempted to start a thread about this.

I never owned an Android device, but always considered them as a garbage (the OS) I don't know why but that's how I felt about it. The iOS is beautiful but the price they put on..i don't think it worth that much (ex.the price for iPhone 5 or 5s when it first came out was over $1000) and I'm not willing to pay it. So my first smartphone was L710, loved it, Never had any problem, still have it. Now I have L928 haD many know problems (freezing, restarting) still loved it, now I don't have any issue, love it even more. If in some case I'm going to change phone/OS it would be L1020>iPhone >HTC One (love it's design) or Galaxy

i chose windows phone cause one of my friends got a lumia and i was looking for a new phone and it seemed like a worth trying device even tho i wasnt like touched with the windows phone environment....later i got to like the ecosystem (5 months ago) ..now im regretting it and i wanna go back to android ASAP

it doesn't have too much clutter on the main screen (as I used to call it) opposed to Android. plus its SO CHEAP for a decent WP. I've a Lumia 820.

I used to have an iPhone (3GS, when it was current to be specific), and found the experience acceptable, but I wanted a more customizable interface. That's when I switched to Android, and had a very good experience, other than crazy bits of instability, due to the wide range of apps that just didn't get along with each other, or hogged the processor, etc. I went through 2 android phones, Samsung Infuse 4g and HTC Inspire. Both were excellent phones, and the Inspire I let a friend have, and is still working fine after 2 years.

I saw the windows phone interface, and figured I'd try it out with a Nokia Lumia 920 I purchased for 97 cents on sale at a WalMart kiosk. I have to admit, it took a little getting used to, and there weren't as many apps available for WP8, but after finding the apps that did what I wanted, I found that they were usually better quality than Android. There seemed to be hundreds of apps on Android that all did the same thing, and they were usually just copycat apps that crashed and burned more than they worked. Speed and stability have never been a problem on the WP phones I've had.

I've gone from the Lumia 920 to the Lumia 1520, and aside from the touch screen issue, it's a great phone. I'm holding out for the fix, hopefully it'll be here soon, but I'm still well pleased with it's screen. I also enjoy when people look and ask about my phone, with it's gigantic screen.

Only way to know for yourself, is to really try for yourself...

Unfortunately, all opinions asked are biased no matter which way you look at it.
Your "preferences" may not resonate with those of the person next to you, so you can never be sure that his opinion will resonate with yours.

So there is only one way to find that out: to try all platforms and see which one YOU prefer...

Sounds harch, but basically regarding this subject you can really only trust yourself.

My own opinion :

WP

pros
cheaper models that are still "on par" with higher models.
smooth polished and fast UI, tries to be "innovative".
has some "uniqueness" to it

cons
lacks WAY too many features
truly basic "needs" are not met at all (calendar/music player/video player,...)
lots of garbage/fake apps in store
pretty useless as a company phone

ANDROID

pros
"free" user experience
has about every feature you'd expect from a "SMART"phone
the latest models are VERY fast (even faster than WP. Really!)
Much more choice of apps in store

cons
MESSY UI. Opposite of "innovative"
The OS is cloggy, not that efficient.
cheap models are def. NOT "on par" with higher models.

iOS

pros
really def. preferrable as a company phone
BEST mp3 functions and sync functions in general.
Stuff like jail breaks for those who are into that.

cons
WAY too expensive considering fragile build quality.
Similar limitations as WP (isolated storage, sms-tones,...)
Like all porches, they all look alike. No real "innovations".

BB

really don't know, cause I never tried one of those, but I do know they are also perfect as a company device.

Was with T-Mobile, my Samsung Vibrant became bricked after an update. Didn't have much $$ to spend and when I went to my local store the HTC HD7 was on sale for $250 (it was old at that time). I didn't know anything about WP at the time but it was all I could afford and the HD7 was a rather attractive looking device. I'm a shtickler for clean lines, matching themes and right angles. It always, and still does, bother me that each client for Android (email client, messaging, native web browser) all look like they were designed for totally different OS's. I love that no matter where you go in the WP OS, everything matches. And the virtual keyboards, don't even get me started, they're terrible unless you find a gem in the Play Store. As far as lag goes, honestly, I've never noticed enough lag in Android to drive me crazy, it is there, but I think it's a little overhyped. Also Lumia's are really just beautiful, well built machines. The only current Andorid phone I can think of that has a note worthy design is the HTC One, but I don't wanna get stuck with Sense again. And as far as iPhones go, they're also very beautiful, iOS is boring but reliable, and I actually like the compact size. But sweet Jesus, EVERYONE has one and I just like to be a little different, which is why I picked the glossy red Lumia 1520 lol

My Lumia 520 was my first Smartphone purchase. The primary reason I chose it was the low price and not having to commit to a 2 year contract. I've owned it for 5 months now and couldn't be happier except for ongoing problems with creating music playlists which I hope MS will address with the upcoming WP 8.1 OS update.

What do you mean buy garbage/fake apps ? (when you open the app does it just give you a blank screen-please describe it more)

Funny I switched over to android and so far I'm liking it. Sony's Ui is a nice touch to 4.3 got all my apps and it's all backed up to the pc. Love my Z1s best phone for my needs.

Uh yes...the z1s...excellent choice. Have you done any water proof tests yet ?

Just the thought of being able to walk in the rain without having to consider your phone...just such a wow factor for me.

Sorry I've just got so many questions. What's battery like ?, how's the feel of the UI ?, how's the camera ?, and what does it score in quadrant ?...I've wanted to know that for the past several months.

I chose WP because of how simple it was to use all while keeping it from being too childish. It seemed very well put together and professional in my opinion. I also liked the SkyDrive and Office 365 integration. It comes in handy for school work. While not having all the latest and newly popular games can be annoying sometimes, its nowhere near a deal breaker because even with all the games I do have, my most played one is Microsoft Solitaire. Hahaha. I don't need much game thrill to keep me entertained. :P
