After Symbian went terminal, I went into denial and bought the 808 PureView holding on to the hope that my single purchase would breath life back into the platform and all would be well. I was naive and after seeing the error of my ways, I eventually stated the grieving process for Symbian. After my mourning was complete, I decided that I needed to snap out of the depression, man up and get a grip. It was then that I knew I had to choose another platform. Then followed weeks and weeks of intense research into WP, iOS, Android and Blackberry. Blackberry was quickly ruled out as their devices just seemed a bit crap. Next up was Android. I wasn't a fan of the platform beforehand so I probably went in with a negative opinion and that didn't change. The platform has some good points such as the number of apps/games/services available as well as being hackable but it just seems stacked with malware and I simply do not trust Google with my data so Android failed to make the cut. iOS was quickly ruled out on the basis that everyone that I know who has an iPhone is a complete fecktard. Many of these people actually consider Siri as one of their close friends....but I wonder if they know that Siri will talk to anyone and tell them what they want to lull them into a false sense of security?! Fools!

Then it was on to WP and despite my previous comments, there wasn't really going to be another successor to Symbian for me. I love Nokia phones. At first, I wasn't taken with the live tile appearance from the phones I saw on adverts but the concept grew on me. Whilst the app situation is far from perfect, coming from Symbian, it was a lot better than I was used to and I think I have some amazing apps and games installed on my 920. The latest updates have added some great features, although a lot more needs to be done by MS. Quite a few existing areas need to be improved and we need to continue to see new features implemented. I really do think WP can compete with the market leaders but if progress isn't swift enough, it could easily fail.

I'm coming from the same spot as you, I just came from my 808 pureview which I loved by with system services having random issue's and apps store being closed down early I though I might want to switch. Basicly I love Nokia phone build quality so I decide to take the plunge. I still miss my home screens but I'm starting to get used to it.

The domination of iPhones and Androids at the time felt like it was either premium or crap, respectively. The coming of WP7 was discreet, but tech-savvy people were well aware by the platforms' existence. It was a fresh take on mobile computing. Its features held tightly across Microsoft's ecosystem integrated with Zune, Xbox Live gaming, Office Mobile, and the concept of linking apps within hubs were interesting. For 2 and a half years I wielded a handful of WP7 devices, and over time I had seen the marketplace grow with more apps, and updates which both crippled and improved aspects of the OS's functionality. In 2011, I started to get impatient waiting for decent apps that everybody had and I didn't, so I had gotten a Galaxy Nexus. It was decent and had ICS which was praised by everyone being a giant leap from 2.3. Apparently the device seem to develop noticeable lag and hiccups over time, and the occurrence of unexpected app exits started to get annoying that I had to do factory resets. It was not a pleasant experience. After the announcement of WP8, it made me feel that somehow WP7 was just a 'beta' stage to give Microsoft some time to natively unify their ecosystem by using NT as the core component. It was disappointing, but at the same time the experience that I had with the platform was just flawless. So then I upgraded to WP8, and it's even better.

I've been a Windows admin for years. A couple of years ago I switch to Mac for my main PC and I ended up with a iPhone 5 and an iPad 4.
Then I got bored and ended up with a HTC One and a Samsung Note 8.0

Going back to Windows (at least on the phone and tablet) kind of found me. The camera on the Lumia 1020. Then I thought I'd give Windows 8 (my wife has a Win8 laptop as well) a go on a tablet, picking up a VivoTab dirt cheap. Now a Surface 2 Pro is on pre-order...
It's a slippery slope :grincry:

To be truthful, it was, mostly, a process of elimination. I don't like Apple, their devices seem good but overpriced, but the company is amoral (perhaps, they all are, but Apple seems worse, to me). Android is too open to malware. I gave up on BB, after the Playbook fiasco, where the much promised OS upgrade never happened.

To that, add my wanting to move to a single OS, across my devices, and Windows was the obvious answer. Since then, I have given my Playbook to one of my grandsons and picked up the Surface 2, so my wish has come to fruition.

I started my smartphone experience with the iPhone 3G and used it up to the iPhone 4. When the iPhone became the "we make it a bit more shiny to make you buy the same stuff over and over" phone, I switched to the Galaxy S2 and then the Galaxy S3. I use my phone heavily for work and both platforms did equally bad when it came to being productive. I had to use several workarounds to get stuff done. Just naming the calendar as an example, it was a hideous task to set up conference calls with my phone, invite people to them, add or remove people, update times.. all the stuff I do on a daily basis on the go. Yes, I got it to work eventually (well, never really on the iPhone, since it did not play so well with exchange at the time I used it) but as I said, it always involved some kind of workaround.

Last year I first heard about WP8 and the Lumia 920 and after doing some research, I was sold on it. Working in exchange on my phone as I would on my PC made my life so much easier. I am also a heavy SharePoint user and WP8 is the first platform where the integration with SharePoint makes real sense. I think WP8 is a no brainer for professionals. I don't care how many games I can play or how many apps I can download. I need my phone to allow me to be as productive with office applications as I possibly can while on the go. Office for WP8 is far from being perfect and I would like to see a lot more functionality, but as a review tool and to make quick edits, it does its job exceptionally well. The looks of my coworkers when they see me doing stuff they can only dream of on their phones showed that I made the right choice. I saw a lot of them switching to WP8 after I showed them what can be done and just recently, I found out that our company now offers the L920 as an option for a company phone (and with 300k employees worldwide, I think that is pretty cool)

I don't think I could ever go back to any of the other platforms. The simplicity of the WP OS paired with the fact that it does the things it does really well, makes it my OS.

As for Nokia? It doesn't get any better than that. They always have built extremely good phones and the Lumia line is no exception. I am still laughing when my coworkers frantically look for a power outlet for their iPhones after half a day while I have 50% battery left :)

There is no way in hell anyone gets me off WP... or Lumia for that matter.

After several years as a user of Apple products, I decided to change my mobile phone from iPhone 4 to a Lumia925 and my tablet iPad 2 for a Windows Surface RT, keeping the Macbook Pro as my laptop, and the experience I have had so far with mobile phone and the tablet I can only say that I am extremely pleased with the changes I made, and think very seriously about changing the Macbook Pro for a laptop with windows 8.1, I'm getting fond of Windows systems after many years as a user Apple !

I didn't want an OS that was basically just lists of apps. I wanted something more "alive". WP was the logical choice.

Apple - I refuse to pay those prices for something little more than a fashion statement for too many people.
BB - Don't like QWERTY k/board phones, which rules out most of their phones straightaway - it wasn't until a friend got a touch BB last year that I even knew they did touchscreen phones. I don't see anything special about their new OS to consider it.
Android - Second choice for me, but nothing special to me in comparison to WP (see below)

I knew about a year ago that I needed to replace my increasingly problematic Dell laptop, so knew I would be on Windows 8, so I started to consider a WP then.On top of this, I liked the look of the live tiles, the design of the phones, and the fact it was unique, so decided that, once a cheap enough phone came out, I would buy it (if the reviews were positive). The 620 came out amid positive reviews, so I bought one, and that was 89 months ago! Nuff said.

Hypothetical question - what if a better phone is launched on another platform? Wouldn't you switch then? Not saying it will happen, but what if it did?

BTW, interested in all the comments on Nokia build quality. My experience was exactly the opposite - Nokia phones developing bad scratches, poor design (e.g. buttons that a hard to operate individually), coating on back cover coming off in places after a few weeks, etc. I've found HTC much better quality.

I was never happy with the IPhone, tried the first Motorola Atrix, that I had to factory reset every 6 months. Got a Dell Venue pro and have never looked back.

My first smartphone was the HTC Desire and I completely hated it then I got myself an iPhone 4 it was ok but extremely boring and didn't like the iOS in general. After that I've tried Samsung Galaxy S2 it was better then iPhone 4 simply because I could customize it more but quickly found it all messy and boring (after 3 months already thought of selling it) finally I've lost it.... So I had an excuse to get new phone and without much thinking I bought Samsung Galaxy S3 and I was disappointed ( the only good side of it for me was the screen) the OS was still messy and this horrible lags was driving me mad so after 7 months I ended up smashing it on the wall.... I have to say it did satisfy me a little bit 😁 So my next phone I got is Nokia Lumia 925 to be honest after what I've heard about WP8 I wasn't sure about but I decided to give it a go. Since I have this phone I extremely enjoy it. I love the OS it's so clear, easy and I can't get bored of it and most important I don't have to put up with those lags anymore! The OS i so quick that I still can't believe it! There is no way I would go back to iOS or Android! Once the day comes to get a new phone I know it definitely will be another Windows Phone.

I forgot to say I never owned BB because I don't like the keyboard and I had chance to play around with BB and I didn't like it's OS
