Will WP10 Make 8 Go The Route Of 7?

Really, I do wonder if the release of Windows 10 for mobile (or however it's going to be named) is going to essentially force all our present apps and ecosystem into immediate obscurity as did WP8 to WP7, or will it all be cross compatible? WP7 wasn't a real large piece of market before doing a platform reboot, so the kernel is changed, WP8 is out, and WP7 becomes short lived. I'm convinced MS's Windows Phone user base is much larger now than it was when WP7 was alive, and I really think another "drop and start over again" move would be fatal for the platform. Anyone have any insights?

No information has been released yet, but as Windows Phone 7 to Windows Phone 8 was different kernels (the base OS) and 8 to 10 are the same, chances are our Windows Phone 8 devices will get Windows 10.

It's been confirmed by both windows central and Microsoft that all windows phone 8 devices will be supported by windows 10.

I dont see a need to. Windows Phone 7 existed on an outdated kernel and a dead end development environment.

The unification dream of Windows 8 is 85% of the way there already, and that was the hard part, the core underpinnings of the OS. Windows 10 will finish the job, and its unlikely that these existing devices will be left out in the cold, carrier interference not withstanding.

I'm pretty confident that all Windows phones running 8.0/8.1 will get the Windows 10 update. If you are on a PC running Windows 10 Tech Preview you can see how similar the settings are between the devices. What I think you will find is any new settings or extras that become available in Windows 10 will be suited for devices running 8XX chipsets or higher and also for any new devices optimized for Windows 10. However, for lower specced phones I imagine some settings of Windows 10 will be blocked/greyed out for devices that aren't running supported hardware.
So in some ways, yes you will be missing out on certain functionality when Windows 10 is released, however at least your current phone will still get supported updates so you won't be left out in the cold this time.
I can't say this is the truth as it's purely just speculation and my 2c worth on how this will roll out.
