Yea, got a screen protector. If I can't use a screen protector, I don't want it. It shouldn't even be a problem. Pinch/zoom also not working. I hate it, but I returned the phone today. I should've just bought a 635, like I got my wife. There is no excuse for problems like this. There are exactly 3 decent Flagship quality Windows phones worth looking at (HTC One, 1520, 830) and 2 of them have deal breaker issues. 830 with its capacitive buttons and the 1520 with touch screen issues. I absolutely will not buy an Android phone and I don't want to move to iOS due to the iTunes requirement. Microsoft is doing everything they can to move me to an iPhone. The HTC doesn't interest me because it doesn't have sd card expansion.

This has been driving my wife nuts, apparently she uses Cortana more than I thought.

Since we got her phone on the Next plan, she is super paranoid about breaking it so she wanted the screen protector right away and a case. We had one on her 920 and it never had any responsiveness issues so I am guessing it is something just to do with the phone itself and can't really be blamed fully on the screen protector.

The other two buttons respond fine, and in my search for answers I saw several people saying they were having an issue even without a protector. I saw MS respond back in August on a forum saying they were researching the issue, but didn't see anything since then. Right now, I am just telling her to be patient and it will hopefully be addressed with a update if it is not a hardware issue, and to just use the cortana tile for now. So far this is her only gripe with the phone, and she prefers to stick with Lumia because she likes the camera stuff, she is always taking pictures. Since she dropped her 920 the 1520 was too big for her tastes so we went with 830. Hoping they will get fixed. I mentioned the hole punch solution, she didn't want to do it :p

Same issue. Just got my wife the 830 and didn't test it without a screen protector but with it on the search button doesn't respond at all. The other two seem to work fine.
Hmmm... This is exactly what's happening to mine and started this morning. I put a screen protector on it yesterday and noticed this morning that the Search button doesn't wanna work. Both Start and Back buttons work just fine. Tried a few soft resets but still the same. This has to be a hardware issue!

I noticed the same issue with the Search/Cortana button on my L830 with a Skinomi screen protector on it - sometimes would work (10% of the time). Took it back to AT&T, and they said it could be the screen protector brand. So, the rep peeled off the Skinomi, and we both confirmed that the search button works fine without the Skinomi. The rep then put on a Zagg Dry screen protector which is "guaranteed" to work with any phone (I had to pay for it). Same thing happened with the Zagg: search button worked sometimes. So, AT&T switched out my phone with a new one, put on another Zagg Dry, and same issue happened. Since it works fine without the protector, I decided to get a free Zagg replacement and install it myself since the AT&T did a crappy job (air bubbles and dust). Before I applied, I used a hole puncher to punch a hole in the protector where the Search button is located. Works much better now; however, I still do see issues of it not registering my touch at times. I would say it works 80-90% of the time now. Sometimes going back to the home screen via Windows or Back button and then hitting Search resolves the issue. I have talked with others who have the phone, and they have noticed the same issue even without screen protectors. Windows and Back buttons work perfectly fine for me with the protector on. Hopefully, this is just a firmware fix that is in the works, but it does seem like an issue affecting a lot of phones. The only good thing that came out of my experience is now have screen protector replacement for 2 lifetimes - one from Skinomi and one from Zagg. :eck:
Dude, you're absolutely right! The problem is the screen protector! What I ended up doing was cutting out that corner of the protector so is not over the Search button and it works perfect, just like it used to be! How bizarre that it doesn't affect the other two buttons!

you have a screen protector? Mine definitely does not work with a screen protector on. I already tried a few. They all render the search button unusable. It seems the touch area of the search button without a screen protector is already tighter than the other two. But I have no issues without the screen protector. There is a thread with similar problem on the back button. within that thread lots of people are also complaining about the search button. It maybe a bad batch of digitizers. I'd try to get it replaced.

ps. I've used a hole puncher to put a hole for the search button. Looks "interesting" but works fine now.
It definitely is the screen protector what's causing the problems. I kept the protector but went ahead and cut out the entire bottom rectangle so all capacitive buttons are accessible. Looks good and all three buttons work fine!

Yep, my wife didn't like the idea either. But for now I'd say better safe than sorry. My wife often carries her phone together with keys and other metal parts in a side pocket of her purse. We found scratches in the past on her L920. Once the screen is already on the phone it's probably more of a pain to pull it off and put a hole into it.
I just hope there is a way to get this fixed via a firmware update and not hardware exchange etc.

Problem is still there!

Recently I've been experiencing random freezes accompanied by a restart. I don't know if it's cause by the SD card because whenever it restarts it shows a warning that my SD card has a problem. I'll try to format my SD card to see if it will still happen. :) Other than that, my Lumia 830 is great!

Update: I was able to reformat the SD card. But the problem is still there. It's still freezing and rebooting randomly. I'm starting to hate it. It feels so unstable compared to my old 820. 😒 Any suggestions?

WiFi randomly stops working is my biggest beef with the phone. Have to reboot or turn on Airplane mode and back off to get it to reconnect. Posts lower in the forum detailing the problem.

However, I have noticed it takes a long time for the phone to come out of Airplane mode. Not instant like it was on my 920. Kind of weird. Already have did a reset once trying to see if it corrected WiFi problem. Everything else is pretty good, minus the absence of the new camera app we are all waiting on.

I had Wi-Fi connection loss until I noticed that I didn't check [X] Connect automatically, since then I've had no issues other than sometimes when I'm connected to very weak signal I have to reconnect

I forgot that was an issue with mine too so I did a soft reset and it fixed it. Sometimes these glitches get fixed by one or even two in a row soft resets.

I did a reset on Friday and the camera hasn't been operating while locked since. How weird that a simple reset would solve this!

Edit: False alarm. Still loads while locked. Baffling.

Ok, here's my experience so far with my L830, I've used it for the last month or so:

On the good side:
  • No lag scrolling through the screen
  • No gaps between the case which lead to light leaks
  • Very nice viewing angles
  • Battery last for a whole day with normal usage (WiFi, GPS always on)
  • Not even one random reboot during the day whatsoever
  • Capacitive buttons working like they are supposed to

On the no-so-good side:
  • Headphone Jack ring started to become loose
  • WiFi connection is lost very often, although the icon says it's connected.
  • It gets a tittle bit hot when gaming on it

Other than that I'm totally loving my 830, It is RM-984 and I got it from Amazon
I hope WiFi issue gets corrected with an update

Are you able to open the photo gallery when the phone is locked, though? I thought the camera was supposed to work in locked mode but would require the unlock password if you wanted to check out photos.

Well it's been 2 days since the battery saver stopped working by using the shortcut,
it opens then goes back to the start screen. Useless.
Opening it thru System settings it opens to the settings,
it stays open but when I tap usage it closes and reverts to System. What next 😒

I feel that the bottom buttons (I dont know the "official" name for it - Back, Start and Search) are a bit unresponsive. You have to tap almost in the exact middle of the button... The 820 has a huge contact area in these buttons, while the 830 has a really smart one.
Also, the earphone "hole" seems to be a bit tiny, my earphone almost doesn't fit there. I'm afraid that some day I'll broke the jack or the cellphone by putting the earphone.

Has a scroll ever registered as a tap to anyone?? I dunno if I'm doing it wrong but this keeps happening frequently to me!

^ strange. I've had my L830 since October and not once has it registered panning as tapping.

Me either, first I'm hearing of this issue. In fact part of the reason I left my 1520 for the 830 was that very bug. Very glad not to be dealing with that anymore.
